Try Not to Die, Thursday, May 13, 2021

"Hello," Anakin said, smiling in front of the Portalocity Office as he stood next to a redheaded man in a pair of jeans and a dark hoodie. "Welcome to Try Not to Die, which I am running this session with my grandson, Ben."

Ben gave everyone a way. "Welcome," he said in a faint British Coruscanti accent. "I'm here to make sure Granddad doesn't actually kill you."

Anakin gave him a bit of a look. "This class is all about thinking on your feet as you explore new places throughout this planet," he said, "which we pick though a highly scientific method," he said.

"We drink a shot of whiskey and throw a dart at a map," Ben said helpfully. "So this week we're all going to Paraguay!" He almost got that pronunciation right.

"You will complete a series of tasks and the first person to find us wins the thrill of finding us first," Anakin said. "Ready, steady, go!"

Troy definitely thought he knew what a cello looked like. He worked in a music store; he should know what a cello looked like! But he, like an idiot, started making a bass instead!

That was gonna cost him!

Knowing what a cello was quite different from making one. And Enola spent a good amount of time trying to ensure that it actually worked than just looked like one.

Harry knew what a cello was. It was the big one, right?

How he managed to actually put something playable together without coming in dead last was a shock even to him.

Alara really only had the faintest idea on what a cello was and was surprised she was able to complete the task as quickly as she did.

Elli did know what a cello was. They had one at church.

That did not in any way, shape, or form give her the slightest idea of how to put one together.

She... she was going to be here for a good while. But not dead last!

And super grateful that this was a non-dangerous task. She liked the task, even if she wasn't the best at it.

Nell actually had no idea what a cello looked like. In fact, she'd have been hard pressed to say what a cello was.

This was not going to end well.

Arabella had spent a lot of her childhood helping her grandma out in the garage, so making something out of recycled materials wasn't a problem for her. What was a problem was how fuzzy her recollection of what a cello looked like was. She had to make some adjustments to her initial product, okay? It was fine.

Unfortunately Enola thought using your melon meant solving a problem. Doing a dance and keeping a bottle on her head was more than challenging.

But she did enjoy it.

Harry was absolutely not dancing. Sure, the watermelon stacking didn't go especially well, but it was better than if he'd chosen the other thing!

Alara decided to try stacking the watermelons, it took a bit longer than normal because she kept breaking them as she tried to stack them but she still managed to complete the task relatively quickly.

Being no stranger to hard work, Elli chose to stack her melons, and she thought that, while he was no longer here, that Wayne would've been pleased by how very efficiently and effectively she got through the task.

First done! How wonderful!

It's not that Nell was terrible at stacking melons, it's just that she was already so ridiculously far behind that there wasn't a hope in the world that she'd come in anything other than dead last - no matter how fast she stacked them.

Maybe Arabella should have done the bottle dancing thing instead, because her stupid melon pyramid kept collapsing and rolling all over the place. Uuuuugh.

For all her detours and bad dancing, Enola made up her timing by making that odd looking beverage. Upon learning she had to drink it however she had second thoughts.

But drink it she did, making a bit of a face. "Mmm. Bracing," she said, struggling to find words.

Alara lost considerable ground with the last challenge because she kept breaking the mortar but eventually she did fill up the thermos and make her way to the finish line.

She didn’t really have a problem with drinking it, so that part she could at least do quickly.

This took her a while--and it wasn't because the mortar and pestle were hard to use, she was used to that--but because Elli got herself a bit turned about and couldn't find either of her teachers for a little bit.

Well, at least she wasn't last?

"I actually think this tastes pretty good," Elli admitted, once she'd tried her drink.

This was actually pretty easy. Nell was well versed in the use of a mortar and pestle and quickly had made enough to move on. If she hadn't already been so far behind she might just have come in first.

She made her way over and drank the terere. "Not bad," she said consideringly. "I don't think I'll be switchin' over to this anytime soon, but it's not terrible."

Did Arabella use super strength to speed up the mortar and pestle business after that whole fiasco with the melons? Maybe. You couldn't prove it though.
