Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

As was usually the case with these things, good weather was once more blessing the gathering of Fandom folk new and old. There was a bonfire, but it was mostly for decoration. And for s'mores, the makings of which were available at one of the nearby tables.

There was plenty of food, and there were tables and chairs set up all across the lawn (with light dustings of glitter where you least suspected it, naturally), and everything was ready for another welcome picnic!

[OCD up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"You'll take that back when Val and Ben start ganging up on you," Ender commented, walking up to him. "He's already got her practicing 'May the Fourth be with you'."

"Something to look forward to next year," Anakin said dryly, shaking his head. "I'm far more interested in knowing how he keeps track of how time moves here."

"That's true," Anakin admitted. "What brought you back this summer? Are you finished with your latest project?"

"We're moving on to another planet when we get home, yes," Ender said.

"I hope the next one's warmer," Val muttered.

Ender's mouth curved a little. "And then we might start thinking about getting you another brother."

Anakin smiled to hear both of those things. "I prefer the warmth myself," he told Val. "I grew up in the desert."

"I have to put on a coat when I go outside," Val complained. "Even in summer."

"We're on a planet founded by Alaskan natives," Ender said wryly. "It's a little further from the sun than she's used to."

Anakin chuckled. "That would not by my favorite, either, Val," he said.

Was Val going to try to use that against her parents? Absolutely, she was.

"So how's the island been?" Ender asked. "The usual, I imagine."

"Well, I drove the new students back in a bus painted like a chocolate bunny," Anakin said wryly, "so I think it's gotten a little stranger."

"Prank," Anakin said. "There are a few students who have taken to showing their affection-slash-absolute lack of sense by decorating the school bus for every welcome picnic."

Ender chuckled. "So it's finally happened," he said, "You've got yourself a fanclub."

Anakin sighed heavily. "It appears so," he said. "Jaina will never let me hear the end of it."
