Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

As was usually the case with these things, good weather was once more blessing the gathering of Fandom folk new and old. There was a bonfire, but it was mostly for decoration. And for s'mores, the makings of which were available at one of the nearby tables.

There was plenty of food, and there were tables and chairs set up all across the lawn (with light dustings of glitter where you least suspected it, naturally), and everything was ready for another welcome picnic!

[OCD up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Considering the owl focus, Harry wasn't sure how this was going to go, really.

"So I guess we're roommates," he said.

"I guess so," said Sakaki, blinking a moment more at the list before looking over at Harry.

She desperately wanted to ask about where his owl would be sleeping, but she didn't, instead looking back to the list as if that had the answers instead.

"I've never had a roommate before," she admitted.

Which meant she wasn't sure how to handle this.

Would he be okay if she put up some of her cute things? Where would her stuffed animals stay? She couldn't just keep them tucked away in her suitcase, that would be terrible for them!! But what if he didn't like them? Would that be worse?

"I have. I had to share a room with all the other boys in my year." They were, of course, boys though, and Harry wasn't sure if this was going to be much different. "It's not that big a deal."

"Other...boys?" asked Sakaki, with the worry settling in on her that this was a whole situation like when they had uneven numbers for sports events and so Sakaki ended up competing with the boys or being on the boys' side of things to even things out, especially since she could beat almost all of them, anyway.

She glanced over toward Malia and Clare, though, thinking at least it wasn't strictly a height thing, since Malia seemed to be just about the same height as her.

Actually, she noticed that a lot of people here were taller than she was used to, which was kind of...nice, not being the tallest person in the room for a change.

And then she looked back at Harry.

"I guess so," she allowed.

If he was okay with it, then she could be, too. Guess they'd find out once they moved in...

And then there was Harry, who was short and not really bothered about it.

"It's not going to be a problem or anything, is it?"

"I don't....think so," said Sakaki, cautiously, because she really wasn't sure, but she was sort of hoping it wouldn't be, but if it was a problem, she didn't think it would be on her end, she just hoped Harry wouldn't mind, and...

"Will your owl stay with you, too?" she wound up blurting out, and then stiffening with instant regret.

"Yeah," Harry said, and had to add, "You really like my owl."

That did not help with the instant regret, Harry! And it also didn't help with the blush now threatening to spread all across Sakaki's cheeks, as she kept her eyes determinedly forward on the posting of room assignments instead of looking anywhere at him.

"She's a very nice owl," she said, as if to explain it.

Followed by a slightly wavering, "I've never met an owl before."

And she considered it one of the single most greatest experiences of her life, Harry!

It was at least a common ground that they could both agree on, and a small, if uncertain, smile started to show up on Sakaki's face.

"She really is," she said, even though she'd only even spent that brief time hanging out with Hedwig before the bus picked them up, but, really, that was all she needed to know for sure that Hedwig was a wonderful owl.

Maybe...maybe she could focus on learning as much as she could about birds first, when she started at the shelter! That way, if Hedwig ever needed any help, Sakaki would be able to do that for her...and for Harry, too, she supposed.
