Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

As was usually the case with these things, good weather was once more blessing the gathering of Fandom folk new and old. There was a bonfire, but it was mostly for decoration. And for s'mores, the makings of which were available at one of the nearby tables.

There was plenty of food, and there were tables and chairs set up all across the lawn (with light dustings of glitter where you least suspected it, naturally), and everything was ready for another welcome picnic!

[OCD up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"None of them have bothered me much," Stark said. "Aside from Anakin and he thinks he's justified." Because Anakin's reactions were, in fact, completely justifiable.

"I don't really know everyone. Some of them could be terrible."

"Aaaaand, believe me," Prompto chuckled, part sheepish, but mostly proudly, "I am no stranger to Bus Dean being bothered."

In fact, he delighted in it.

He was waiting on that glare from said Bus Dean aaaaaany minute now, once the newbie shuttle had returned.

"Honestly, though," he offered with a shrug, "it's kind of surprising how few people are terrible around here. Surprising...but pretty nice, y'know?"

Poor Anakin.

"It is nice," Stark agreed. "One reason I've come back. And stayed." And then come back and stayed again.

"What have you done to Anakin?"

Prompto's face positively lit up.

Well, metaphorically speaking, considering who he was talking to...

But anyway.

"I'd show you pictures if I actually had my phone," he beamed excitedly. "But it's busted. Nina's got some, if we can track her down, but she and I....it's, like, tradition, right? For the past few years, we've always done something to make the newbie shuttle bus a little more...umm...let's just say...exciting? For the newbies, you know? This year, we did an Easter theme."

Not even close to actual Easter, for that matter, but to them, that made it even more hilarious.

#ArgentumLogic!

He snickered.

"We switched all the seats with egg-shaped ones that were painted all like Easter eggs, left a bunch of candy for all the newbs to get all sugar-hyped on, and painted the bus itself to look like a giant chocolate bunny. It was beautiful! And to top it all off, I left a little something special for the driver's seat, too."

That something special being a whoopee cushion.

Because Prompto was super mature sometimes.

"You made him drive a chocolate bunny? Full of eggs and candy?"

Stark grinned, because that was thoroughly ridiculous and Anakin deserved every moment of it. (Anakin didn't, really.)

"I saw the bus last year. At Homecoming." The bus that seemed to be proposing to Anakin at the time. "Did you help with that or was that all Nina?"

Somehow, somehow, Prompto's grin found room to get even bigger, because, ohman, how had he almost forgotten entirely about HOMECOMING DATE BUS?

Man. He and his sister? Were pretty much geniuses, weren't they?

"She did most of the heavy lifting on that one," he admitted, "but we were both involved with that one, too, yeah. Bus shenanigans? Preeeeettty much our legacy around here. Homecoming Bus was definitely a highlight, though. I'm also partial to when we made it a party bus, all decked out with lights and music and, like, those bumping lift things that people rig their cars up with, after I graduated, but that one was mostly me, since we figured it was going to be my last one."

He sighed happily, fondly at all the bus memories of the past, and the pleasure of knowing that they had yet to cease.

"I've only seen it the once," Stark said. Because he hadn't been assigned to airport duty yet. Give Anakin time. Maybe it would happen later this summer! "But that sounds very...excessive." But in a good way!

"Go big or go home, am I right?" asked Prompto, grin not even close to quitting. "Oh, and the music was great, too, let me..."

He reached for his phone to pull it out and play it for Stark, except he only them remembered that his phone wasn't there at the moment and made a frustrated sound.

"Ugh, never mind. I had the song on my phone, but my phone right now is a little...indisposed."

"You can show me another time," Stark said. "Broken phone?"

"Uhmmm," Prompto's head ducked, as he rubbed the back of his neck. "Kind of? I, uh, lost it. And then some jerk found it and messed it all up. Scrambled it, or something, I haven't been able to get it working again. I might need to get a whole new one. It's a whole...thing."

Right when there were streams of his exes big fighting tournament he should be watching, too! It was kind of driving him a little crazy not knowing what had happened, even though he was pretty sure Yang had only sent him the links by accident.

"There might be someone here who could fix it?" Stark offered. "There are a few people who are good at things like that."

Prompto shook his head, then waved a dismissive hand. "They've got it back at the lab back home," he said. "Running some sort of diagnostics, to make sure he didn't, like, load it up with trackers or spy ware or anything. It's pretty much a goner at this point, I think. RIP, man, you know? But at least this gives me an excuse to maybe get a shiny new one..."

"Oh. Good luck?" Stark said uncertainly.

He wasn't all that attached to his own phone, mainly because he didn't use it that often for much of anything. But he knew that a lot of people here were very attached to theirs.

Prompto breathed out a bit of a laugh, trying to shrug it off, because not only was he pretty attached to his phone, but it had also, currently, been his only access to a very important tournament involving a very important person that he hadn't talked to in years, but he was trying to shrug it off as best he could as no big deal.

Plus, you know, the whole mysterious entity stole it and fucked it up and also was kind of taunting my sister about it of it all.

Whatever. He was clearly going through a lot right now, but that didn't matter because welcome picnic!!!

"So," he gave Stark his best sort of ne'er-do-well smile, which, to his credit, was actually pretty good, "what're you teaching?"

Hang in there, Prompto. Maybe things would start looking up?

"Cupcakes," Stark answered cheerfully. "Again. You?"

Oh, yeah, definitely! There was absolutely no steeply downward slippery slope waiting for him by the end of this picnic, or anything, all turning up roses for the Prompster from here on in!

"Photography," said Prompto, with a grin because it was impossible to not grin at cupcakes, either, even if it did go a little sheepish when he realized, "Whiiiiich involves at least one unit on taking pictures with your phone, so I miiiiight want to get on that replacement sometime soon, huh?"

Stark nodded. "You might. I don't take many pictures with mine." Any, really. There were pictures of his impossible children on there and that was about it.

"I just like it because sometimes it's easier to get a quick shot on the go with a phone," Prompto shrugged a little. "Plus selfies are way easier. You can actually get some really sweet shots on a phone, plus it's easy storage and makes it simple to post online!"

Wow. He already sounded a bit like a teacher with that pitch, didn't he?

Or at least a phone salesman, or something.

"I don't post anything online," Stark said. Or take selfies. "But I can see how it would be easy."

"You could always post pictures of your cupcakes online!" Prompto suggested. "People love pictures of cupcakes online!"

He was, indeed, people in this case.

"I do like looking at them," Stark admitted.

He, too, was people in this case. But he mostly looked at ones that came with recipes. He was not on baking instagram or tiktok. Yet.
