Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

As was usually the case with these things, good weather was once more blessing the gathering of Fandom folk new and old. There was a bonfire, but it was mostly for decoration. And for s'mores, the makings of which were available at one of the nearby tables.

There was plenty of food, and there were tables and chairs set up all across the lawn (with light dustings of glitter where you least suspected it, naturally), and everything was ready for another welcome picnic!

[OCD up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Ender hadn't missed Fandom. Not really. He didn't have it in him, that nostalgic touch, especially as his and Ben and Valentine's travels took them further away from Earth, from their own past.

And yet: here he was again. Standing in the teacher area, listening to his daughter's observations about the people at the picnic.

"Remember," Ender said quietly, "Don't make snap judgments."

Ben returned, his hand firmly holding onto his son's--Bantha had already bolted twice--and held out a plate of fruit for Valentine.

"Ho, kreetle," he said, smiling. "Feeling ancient yet?"

"Yes," Ender said, looking up at him with faint amusement in his eyes. "Roughly since the first year I attended. More or less."

"Well, if you must yell at them to keep off your lawn, make sure Granddad hasn't beaten you to it first," Ben teased.

Ender laughed softly. "I wouldn't dare steal his thunder, I promise," he said. "So how do you feel?"

"Old," Ben admitted with a chuckle. "Weirdly alone? I don't really feel other Force-users here."

"There had to be a Jedi-free period eventually," Ender said, sounding thoughtful.

"I'm here now," Val pointed out. "And Bantha!"

"So you're not alone," Val pointed out. Just so he got her point, here.

Ender looked out over the picnic, still thinking. "Well," he said, "Maybe this summer will be a different kind of interesting, for once."

"I already spot two people who seem to made of felt, so that's new," Ben commented.

Ben laughed. "And her party cannon," he said, "which was astral."

"It's always good to have a project," Ben said, chuckling. "It keeps me out of trouble when you're doing actual work."

Ender made an amused noise. He shook his head.

"I had to save your grandfather from Val."

It was Ben's turn to look amused. "How'd that go?"

Ender snorted.
