Culinary Fundamentals; Friday, First Period [04/16].

Due to a good amount of restraint even in the face of leather-begotten discounts, Ignis had kept his drinking moderate last night, for which he was glad for, because today was going to be a very...special day in the Culinary Fundamentals classroom. Today was the sort of day that Ignis would hold up forever as proof that he could, in fact, be conciliatory to absurdity on occasion.

Because today they had a guest co-teacher, in the form of a grinning and eager Prompto with a box in his hands, and clearly unable to stand still with the sheer anticipation for what they were about to do.

But first...

"Good morning," Ignis greeted them with a nod, "I hope this week went a little more smoothly for everyone than the last, and I'm pleased to tell you that we'll be doing a very special activity for today's class that will hopefully actually get you thinking a little bit about next's week's class, which will be our final class, so before we get into today, a word about your final exam:

"Your task, if you choose to accept it, which I certainly hope you do since it is an assignment, after all, is to pick a recipe of your choosing and prepare it for us in class. It can be anything you'd like, though I will certainly dole out far more points for creativity and difficulty based on your particular range of skills. We should have a wide variety of ingredients at your disposal, but should you need anything particular that's a little off the beaten path, please let me know and I will ensure that it will be available to you for class next week. That's it. Bringing in a recipe, prepare it for the class, and put those skills that you've hopefully acquired in our time together to good use. If there are any questions, please let me know, and, in the meantime, we'll get onto today's activity, which should hopefully be just a bit of pre-exam fun, and for which I'll turn the attention over to our guest today, whom some of you may already know, but for those who don't, this is my colleague and former Fandom student himself, Prompto Argentum. Prompto?"

The eager, nervous grin blossomed on Prompto's face as the floor was turned over to him. "Hey, guys," he said, then nodded to Ignis. "Thanks, Ignis. Boy, have we got something really special for you today, because today iiiissssss....."

He took a moment to cup his hands over his mouth and doot out a little fanfare.

"Cup Noodle^TM Day!"

Please, everyone just ignore Ignis pinching the bridge of his nose and wanting to just disappear down a hole of quickly diminishing culinary integrity. Oh, the things he did for his friends...

"Now," said Prompto, oblivious to any withering prestige beside him, and thrilled to continue, "for those of you who don't know, Cup Noodle^TM is an instant noodle soup that is popular as a quick and easy snack or meal across the multiverse! It's definitely a favorite among me and my crew, but even I'll admit, sometimes, the simplicity of the convenience of it all leads something to be desired. But here's the thing! It's, like, super easy to do things to really amp up that already delicious Cup Noodle^TM experience by adding your own ingredients and seasonings! Like, want more meat? Bam, grill up some steak and throw it in. Put an egg in it! Add some fresh veg or maybe a sprinkling of cheese or some bomb sauces, and you're really going to elevate an already amazing food to totally the next level! So that's what you're going to do today!"

Was that a particularly smarmy smirk being directed at a certain sister in the classroom ~~assuming she was there~~? Maaaaaybe.

Prompto flipped open the box.

"We've got all sorts of different varieties and flavors in here, so come on up, pick out your Cup Noodle^TM, and let's see what you can make of them!"

Which was definitely not a paid product placement advertisement, how dare you! That was totally organic and natural in the flow of the context of the game.

The sister was, in fact, there!

And totally judging her brother. A lot.

“But cups noodles are terrible!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” she objected.

She was maybe objecting partly because it was her brother, yeah. But also because they were tragic excuses for real food.

Prompto should have expected this kind of insubordination from Little Miss Eggs in Ice Cream, and he knew at least Ignis would be on her side in this one, too, and an important lesson he was learning these days was the importance of choosing your battles.

"Disagree," he said, because he felt ~~contractually~~ obligated to defend his precious Cup Noodles^TM. "But, if that's the way you feel, then this is an opportunity, isn't it? To make them less...allegedly terrible?"

“Oooooooooor,” Nina said, like that was a deeply silly idea and hers was way better, “we could, like, just do the whole thing from scratch and ignore the noodle cups?????????”

Ignis was just going to brush right past the rather impressive pouting face that such a suggestion had inspired out of Prompto as his own inspiration from it sparked up.

"That," he declared, with the authority that might be necessary in this situation since this was, in fact, his class, "is actually an interesting idea, Nina. Perhaps...we could work with this. Perhaps you did want to recreate an elevated version of our humble Cup Noodle^TM from scratch...we could maybe then do a blind taste test between those who choose to enhance the current version and those who make their own, and let that help decide which may ultimately be the victor..."

Granted, it was almost guaranteed that both Prompto and Ignis would be able to tell one from the other even if it was completely blind, and take their picks accordingly, but that was a bridge they could cross when they came to it.

It was just going to end in a tie.

Even Nina knew that.

“I’d be in for that!!!!!!!!!!” she said, brightening at no longer being forced to deal with the travesty of cup noodles.

Except...

Wait...

“What do you mean ‘actually’ a good idea?????????? All of my ideas are good!!!!!!!!!!!”

Even the ones that got pie all over you, Iggy!

Ignis was clearly going to have to choose his words more carefully, lest he wind up with exploded noodles at the end of the day.

"Actually in the context of what seemed like mostly a mere protest," he offered. "Of course, all of your ideas are perfectly brilliant, Nina."

Sarcasm? Blatant unabashed flattery?

Yes.

“I hope you remember that when I’m planning your wedding to my brother,” she grumbled, unappeased by his sarcastic praise.

But, like, she’d accept it.

"Come, now, Nina," said Ignis. "Is that any way to speak to your future brother-in-"

"Stooooooooooop," Prompto's drawling groan of desperation interjected.

Futilely.

"-law?"

“Yes,” she said cheerfully, and grinned at them both. “Besides, like, planning that will give me something to do while I start putting out feelers about Spero..........”

Because his existence was a giant flag that the Nifs had continued their weird bio-project.

It was definitely Prompto's turn to pinch the bridge of his nose a little.

"This was supposed to just be a fun lesson on Cup Noodle^TM," he said. "Can we maybe not get into weird alternate futures about kids that probably don't actually exist right now?"

At least he hoped he didn't actually exist.

Because godsdammit if he did.

Look, can he just maybe not have an existential crisis today? Maybe??

Nina's smile went slightly apologetic.

"I suppose I can just nag Iggy later and we can compare notes on everything," she said, heaving a sigh. "Like, spare your delicate ears our deliberations.............. and also not air them out to the class though, like, I don't know about you two but I could totally take Troy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Yes. Because Ignis would be delighted by that, right? Brawling in his conspiratorial cooking class? Which actually sounded fun... all by itself, like, a conspiracy cooking thing........ hm...........

"Besides," Nina said, blithely continuing on. "If I upset you now then I can't even invite you to my extra castle-building thing tomorrow!!!!!!!!!!!!"

That she had just thought up. But, like, next week was finals week and the castle was...

Not in finals-week condition.

For... ~~real life~~ reasons.

"You too, Iggy!!!!!!!!!!!! I want you both there and putting your backs into it!!!!!!!!!! I've already okayed it with Noct and Gladi!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

She had not, by the way, being a spur of the moment thought and all, but she felt safe in her assumption that Noct would let her get away with this.

Either way, she was pretty sure she'd just flung enough nonsense at the guys that Prompto's existential crisis could be ignored, if only temporarily.

It was definitely shuffled to the side long enough for Prompto to be amused and ask, "You know we were already planning to stay for the weekend, right?"

There was apparently some sort of space party tomorrow? Either way, Prompto definitely saw it aligning with Cup Noodle^TM Rescheduled as a reason to drag Ignis out to it.

Even if apparently, he'd been turning into quite the barely without him!

"You might've had plans," she said, rolling her eyes. The sticking her tongue out at him for good measure.

Prompto didn't care that he was supposed to be a prestigious guest teacher right now; he was totally sticking his tongue right back out at her.

And Ignis, for his part, was graciously ignoring it.

"Summer is apparently holding a party for her friend Annie," he stated, "but I don't see why we can't fit in both."

The idea of staying busy and preoccupied, for once, had its appeal.

For once, Ignis? Really?

"So build in the morning and party at night," she reasoned. "Or, like, I guess I could do it Sunday instead..........."

She wasn't exactly married to this plan she'd just come up with and all.

"I'm pretty sure doing the building after the party would be the worst plan ever," said Prompto.

Wild and crazy party guy that he was and all....

Nina considered that.

"But it might be funny," she mused.

Was it bad to pick up a cherry tomato and toss it at Nina right now?

Because Prompto was totally picking up a cherry tomato and tossing it at Nina.

He was going to be a great teacher.

"Maybe to you."

She was super going to look forward to his class.

“Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!”

Nina was just going to catch that cherry tomato, grin at him, and pop it in her mouth.

“Anyway, like, your call——-you want in for castle building when?????????? I don’t want to ruin your plans ~~IC or OOC~~ so I’m leaving it up to you!!!!!!!!!!

“I’m a benevolent overlord!!!!!!!!!!”

Just think if she was ever really your queen, Prompto, Ignis. Just think about that.

Gods save them all.

"I should think bright and early tomorrow morning," cue the groan from Prompto, but it was too late now, wasn't it? "Will suffice just fine."

~~Because IRL was.gonna blow hard either way! But ohhh weeeelllll~~

“I’ll make sure there’s Ebony,” she promised Ignis. “Anything else you want me to make sure exists?????????”

"I have no idea what's going on " said Troy, to no one in particular, who had mostly been spacing out and hoping whatever it was they were talking about was not important to the assignment, but then he heard Nina say his name and now he was just SO lost....

"You're doomed to be a castle-constructionist tomorrow," Nina informed him pertly. "No ifs, ands, or buts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

So... uh... there?

"A what now?"

That did not help him much, Nina!

"Like, building a castle or something?"

He definitely missed something. He didn't know what cup noodles had to do with castles, but at this point, he was too afraid to ask.

Like, he was still kind of working on the fact that the guest teacher dude was apparently Nina's brother, maybe? And was he, like, married to Mr. Scientia?

Man. Just let him make his ramen!

"Weren't you paying attention?????????" she complained. "Honestly, like, what kind of guy are you??????????"

Rude, that's what he was!

"I am almost positive no one said anything about castles until just now," Troy said, pointing at his station fornemphasis, because he knew he was dumb, but he would remember castles.

"And why are we building castles, anyway?" he added. "We're royalty, Nina, don't we have peasants or something to do that for us?"

Nina grinned at that.

"Like, we've got to supervise the peasants," she explained, completely unabashed about describing her brother and Ignis that way. "You can't just trust them to get the work done!!!!!!!!!!! Besides, there's magic involved in building a castle and that's always fun!!!!!!!!!!"

Troy might still help out, because he was pretty good at manual labour, but also it gave him an excuse to take off his shirt some more, maybe, but at the moment, Nina had his attention on a different thing.

"Like...real magic?"

"You're not actually doing any of it," she sighed. "All you're doing is tapping blocks and saying the command to make them work???????????"

Because of course Troy would be weird about this.

He wasn't trying to be weird about it! He thought the magic stuff was cool!

But with that reaction out of Nina, he wondered if maybe he shouldn't?

"That doesn't sound too bad..."

"It really isn't," she promised. "And, like, that was done because otherwise building a castle would take us a million years!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

On the bright side, when you were dealing with freeze dried veggie bits and noodles in a microwave-save container, the only way to go was up.

So grab some ramen, boil up some water, and see what you can do to make it seem like you're not just eating budget-conscious garbage.

On second thought, this could be worse. They definitely could have stuck to the original plan of doing this last week.

He knew what he was in for, sure, but now that he was actually faced with it, Ignis was pretty sure this was the lowest his integrity had ever been.

And this was a man who went to a bar in leather specifically for drink discounts the night before.

Prompto, meanwhile, was pretty sure that if this wasn't the greatest lesson ever...

What was he even talking about? Of course it was the greatest lesson ever!

Turning my favorite ridiculous side-quest into a lesson has been my endgame for this class THE WHOLE TIME.

Ngl my Noct spends way too much time with the noodle hat on lol
