Have Portal, Will Travel; Tuesday, Fourth Period [03/02].
Things were just a little bit different in the classroom that afternoon. Oh, sure, there was the portal waiting for them for this week's adventure, there was Summer leaning on the desk up front as she waited to get class started, but there was also...Rosa Diaz, looking like she'd rather be pretty much anywhere else right now, so this should be fun!
"Okay," Summer started, "true story time, but last weekend, I almost totally died, and it just really got me thinking that we haven't been paying as much attention to the more dangerous sides of portal travel in this class. It's mostly been, like, weird cultural differences or shifts in perception that can totally mess with your mind, but what about when you happen to find yourself somewhere where gross wet eggs jump at your face and try to take over your body and the only the that stops them from doing so is the fact that you have a toothpick in your mouth?
"Now, we can't all be expected to be munching on toothpicks 24/7 in the rare event that a space parasite tries to eat your brain but we can take steps to better prepare for situations that might get a little....rough. Which is what we're going to be focusing on for the next few weeks, barring any bursts of inspiration thanks to Fandom being Fandom. And that's why we have a guest today, Detective Diaz, who is much more trained in combat than I am. I mean, I'm scrappy, I've literally survived every battle I've been in, clearly, but I just kind of make it up as I go along. This woman's the real deal, though, and can show you the basics so that you don't necessarily have to. And with that...let's get going!"
Summer pushed off the desk and gestured for the first brave student to hop through the portal; on the other side, they'd find themselves in a large room in a gym with mats on the floor, a few practice dummies standing about, mirrors on one wall, and big plate glass windows that looked into an equipment room filled with a variety of aliens in different sizes and shapes getting their work-out on, some of them on machines that looked more like torture devices. As they all came through and acclimated to the new scenery, some large blob-like creature seemed to throw itself on the glass dividing the students from the general work-out area, plastering its large sucker mouth on the window to give you all a view of the inside of it that should be reserved only for its dentist.
"Couldn't we have just done this back at the school's gym?" asked Rosa, eyeing the window now with a disgusted lack of being impressed.
"It's a portal class, Rosa," Summer countered. "Portal class gotta portal."
Well, that just made Rosa roll her eyes and decide to generally ignore Summer now; so what if it was technically her class? It was her lesson now, and, forcing herself to ignore the sucking that was now going on at the glass, she turned her attentiont to the students.
"Alright," she said, stepping up to one of the practice dummies, "hand-to-hand combat, because you might not always have a gun or a knife or a..." She closed her eyes for a moment as if getting over the fact that she was just about to say this, "toothpick, but you should almost always have your hands and your feet. Hands are just as much weapons as knives or axes or guns, only not as much fun or as cool because nearly everyone has them. To attack, best places to hit on the body are..." And as she lifted them, she delivered a deft and precisely blow to each spot on the dummy, and, if it looked a little like a dance when she did it, well...rest assured, her ballet training was clearly going to good use now. "Eyes, nose, groin, knees, solar plexus, knees, fingers, and...my personal favorite...throat!"
Summer cleared her throat a little. Rosa paused, didn't even bother holding back a sigh, and added: "Of course, if you're portaling to a bunch of weird places like space gyms, apparently, your attacker might not have what most would consider normal human anatomy, and therefor, these spots might not be as effective. In that case, just look for the squishy bits or anything that looks like it might be a face, trying to find out where it might be sensitive, and that's what you aim for. Moving on...
"Let's say you can't get that first attack in, though, they've got the upper hand. First, protect anything they can use against you, and that's usually things they can grab onto. Long hair, baggy clothes, hoop earrings, extra appendages or weird things on you because you're not quite human can all be used against you, so don't even let them close. And then go in for a defensive move to subdue the attacker, and that's what we're learning today.
"I'm going to use Summer to show you all a few simple moves for getting out of some of the most basic attacks. First one: Smith, grab for my arm..."
In addition to the arm grab, Rosa had Summer help her out in demonstrating ways to counter a grab from behind, a choke hold, and a hair grab, explaining the motions and details as they did. Then she got to explaining a few good body throws, and if anyone was keen enough to notice that she was throwing Smith a little bit harder than entirely necessary, she trusted they'd be smart enough not to mention it. But, hey, she'd said it herself. She was scrappy. She could handle it, right?
"Okay," Rosa concluded, "what I want you guys to do now is either work on striking vital points on the dummies, and/or pair up and practice defense moves with each other. Those of you with experience, try to help those without. If any of you feel more comfortable having me going over it in a little more detail first, come see me, otherwise I'll be walking around and correcting all your terrible forms. Or work with several people; different body types, heights, and strength can make for solid pratice and experience. Just be careful, take your time, be aware, especially when it comes to those of you with more power and strength, natural or otherwise, and try not to actually injure anyone...."
Rosa trailed off slightly, her attention shifting because now there were two green aliens in jumpsuits attempting to pry the blob creature off the glass with a couple of squeegees.
"And try not to get too distracted," Summer chimed in cheerfully, as if this justified her insistence on a space gym, "by everything else going on! That's half the battle, right there!"
