Intro to Performing Arts | Friday, 2nd Period

"Good morning." Annie sure didn't seem like she believed it was a good morning, no, considering how transparently hungover she was in spite of her efforts to seem chipper. "I'm feeling a little under the weather," oh, sure, "so we're going to have a movie day today, guys. This is about a girl who goes to college and discovers that she has a talent she hadn't really tapped into, and it also covers a fairly underappreciated medium: a capella choirs."

Annie started up the movie, belatedly realizing they needed an assignment. "Um, take notes if you want. The thing she does with the cups is cool if you want to learn to do that."

And maybe by next week she'd have something real for them to do.

A Capella show choir! A truly untapped medium until about 2012!

Who is just tired and kind of grumpy and her head is fine, okay.

You know what helped hangovers, Annie?

Cake.

Strawberry and creamcheese chiffon cake to be exact.

She slid a slice of it over to Annie with a fork and napkin.

Annie eyed the cake, looking up at Nina. "How did you know?" she asked, somewhere between grateful and suspicious.

Know that she wouldn't feel well, she meant. Not that she was hungover, pshhhh no.

Nina knew everything Annie.

Okay, not really, but she was really good at knowing more than she should.

"I just thought you'd want some cake from Ignis' class," she said, eyes wide and innocent. "It's his birthday, you know????????? So we had cake!!!!!!!!"

Nina gave a sly sort of smile.

"Ooooooooor I could take it back.........."

"Nope." Don't mind Annie basically protectively wrapping an arm around that cake, Nina, though she was now slanting a lot more towards grateful. "No, I'm happy to take it off your hands. "Thank you. How's the chalk project going?"

Speaking of Ignis and his birthday and all.

Nina beamed.

"All set!!!!!!!!!!" she said happily. "I finished everything Wednesday night!!!!!!!!!!!!" Okay, Thursday morning. Same diff. "I just have to trigger the spells on Saturday and it's going to be great!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm so excited!!!!!!!"

"And Summer's whole apartment will really be a pool?" Annie asked skeptically as she took a careful bite of cake. "Without, like, her couch being a mildew farm by next week?"

It wasn't that she didn't believe in you, Nina; it's that this was crazy. Amazing, but crazy.

Nina looked betrayed.

(Approximately fifty percent of it was fake.)

"I would never ruin a friend's home," she said earnestly. "Everything of Summer's will be absolutely fine once the spell ends and the only clean up is going to be, like, things like beer bottles and plates and stuff like that?????????"

"Nina, that's incredible," Annie told her sincerely (if, you know, a touch hungover-ly.) "Like, don't take this the wrong way, but this is totally like something I'd expect to see a TV magician do. Fill someone's apartment with water, and then miraculously have everything be fine the next day. Except your magic is real, which makes it even better."

Plus a pool party! In February!

She flushed with pleasure at the compliment.

"You haven't even seen it yet!!!!!!!!" she protested, though she couldn't stop the smile. "You might hate it!!!!!!!!"

"I mean, it's a pool in Summer's apartment," Annie pointed out. "I feel pretty confident saying I'm gonna think it's cool. I don't know anyone else who could do that, nor have I ever been to a pool party inside someone's apartment.

"I........."

Nina couldn't actually argue that though she kind of wanted to.

"Are you looking forward to swimming??????" she asked, instead.

"It should be fun," Annie said with a slight shrug. "I don't know how much actual swimming I'm going to do. More of a sit-by-the-pool kind of girl. But are you looking forward to swimming?"

Nina shifted a little, looking a bit awkward.

"I mean, like, I'm already going to be the youngest person there probably," she said slowly. "And if I'm excited to swim but no one else is......... it's just going to make me look even younger...........

"But on the other hand, it seems silly to make a pool and then not go swim in it.........."

"I might swim eventually," Annie hedged, because she sort of felt bad, in that case. It was mostly a modesty issue for her, anyway, so it might well resolve itself after a couple of drinks. "We should have, like, pool games. Like I could track down some of those diving rings, and we should play, like, Marco Polo. That'd get people swimming, and then you don't have to worry about seeming younger than everyone else 'cause you're the only one who wants to swim."

She brightened.

“Games would definitely make people more likely to swim, wouldn’t they????? I hadn’t thought of that, ohmygosh, Annie, you’re a life saver!!!!!!!!!”

She’d been too busy making the pool to think of things like that!

"I for one would also totally sit on a floaty raft thing," Annie added, nodding. "So we should get some floaty things. Like seahorse-shaped innertubes and cute things like that."

A pause, and, "And then they get deflated the next day so we don't have to, like, fight seahorses next week."

Someone still felt a little bad about those reindeer.

"Maybe check with Summer about the floaties," she admitted. "I've already had to promise to burn the inflatable crown I wanted to get??????????"

For Iggy. Not for her.

"I will also vow to burn any lingering inflatables," Annie decided, "so yeah, I'll run it past her. Do you have, like, hairspray to prevent the static that's probably gonna come from an inflatable crown?"

She thought about these things, Nina.

"Pretty sure that Iggy uses enough product on his hair already that it shouldn't be a problem," she said thoughtfully. "Though, like, it wouldn't be hard to just slip hairspray into my bag before I head over tomorrow???????"

I have a snow day so I will be arooooound except for a brief interval of shoveling and snowman construction!
