The Flight Shed, filled with several versions of flight simulation equipment as well as desks and a whiteboard, was gleamingly clean this morning after years of dissuse. Anakin had harrassed Fosse into given the place a special, deep cleaning over the weekend.

"Good day, class," he said, sweeping into the room with a tiny smile on his face. In Anakin, that meant he was almost giddy with excitement. "Today we shall begin exploring flight and flying, as the name of the class tells you. We'll do introductions first--I am interested in any flying experience you have, either planet-bound crafts, spaceships, or if you can fly without the assistance of machinery."

Anakin would love to be able to just fly without assistance.

"And then we'll go for a spin in the simulator to get you acclimated."

"Oh, if you don't know already, I'm Anakin Skywalker," Anakin said. "I was the winner of the Boonta Eve Classic Podrace on Tatooine when I was nine years old and was widely considered the best pilot in the entire Jedi Order during the Clone Wars."

And that had gone right to his head, of course. "I've flown in combat and can fly pretty much anything you put me in from a podracers to a capital ship, but I prefer starfighters."

She bounced.

"I'm Nina Argentum!!!!!!!!!!!" she announced, like anyone didn't know that already. "And, like, I've gone up in a space ship a few times and flown one once???????"

The one she'd flown had been yours, Bus Dean.

Okay, Stark had helped and been there to make sure she didn't kill them all, but still. Nina was counting it.

"I also, like, can fly when the island turns me into an animal???????"

But did that really count?

Anakin gave her a very, very dry look. "Yes. I've heard about that."

"We brought your ship back in one piece," she said earnestly. "And, like, you were trapped in your home--what else were we supposed to do???????????"

"Call and ask, maybe?" Anakin replied.

"Never crossed your minds, huh," Anakin said.

She was also lying. Nina had thought of contacting him.

But, like, stealing a space ship was way, way more fun than getting permission.

"Juillenne Milone," she introduced herself. "And this is Camden," she indicated the large mountain cat by her side. "I've never flown anything- my world doesn't have that sort of technology- but I've been a passenger on planes in this world, during the school trips?"

It was best not to ask just how Cam managed to get on those same flights as a service animal.

"Did you go up to see the cockpit?" Anakin asked, smiling. "And does Camden want to fly, too?"

Wookiees were incredible pilots. It was only polite to ask.

"Could I have?" Jules asked, disappointed by the implication that she'd clearly missed out on something by not doing so.

"I think Cam is quite content to remain a passenger." Wookies had opposable thumbs! Large cats... not so much.

"I'm Arabella Baylor," Arabella said, "and I haven't gotten to fly anything myself, but my brother-in-law has a helicopter and his pilot showed me some of the controls once." She suspected it had been part of some kind of project to keep her from jumping out of perfectly good helicopters in the future, since apparently she'd nearly given the poor guy a heart attack that one time.

She wasn't going to bring up that time she She-Ra-ed through space just yet.

Anakin gave everyone a quick tutorial on how the simulator's systems worked, then turned on the program--an obstacle course set in space so they didn't have to deal with the effects of gravity on their ships. "Fastest one through gets bragging rights," he said. "Don't get outside the space lane as shown by the red lights and don't accidentally blow up by hitting any of the debris. Remember to think in all dimensions--you can go up and down as well as right and left."

A pilot with some experience could make it through the course in about 5 minutes. Someone with enhanced reflexes could do it in three. Anakin had worked at it until he did it in 2:30 because he had problems.

Her first run through was going to take closer to fifteen minutes but that was because she was a) getting used to things and b) was determined not to crash.

Which she didn't so, like, Nina thought that was pretty good.

Her subsequent runs through were faster, though she wasn't going to hit that 5-minute mark. Her fastest run through was 7:46.

But no crashes. At all.

Was Arabella going to go at it way too fast and crash repeatedly? Yes. Was she having fun and possibly laughing maniacally? Also yes, so what was the problem?
