School Assembly, Wednesday, November 11, 2020

"Hello again, everyone," Anakin said as the students filed into their usual extremelyl comfortable folding plastic chairs that were somehow always a little tippy. "Welcome back again to another thrilling assembly. Today we have a guest from off-island so I expect you to be on your best behavior."

Or at least not levitate the guy off the stage immediately!

"So, please welcome Dr. TC Callahan," Anakin concluded, reaching for the handy card from the front office, "here to speak about Emergency Field Medicine (or How to Save Other People At Great Personal Cost to Yourself)." Anakin's eyebrows drew together. "Huh."

He'd be sitting in the front, just in case.

The speech

TC stepped up onto the stage, only blinking a little bit at what the title of his presentation apparently was. Oh, those friends of his were such jokers!

"Right! As your extremely stylish dean just said, I'm Dr. TC Callahan. I'm an Army ranger and a specialist in emergency and field medicine, and I'm here to talk to you today about how to keep your patient alive in an emergency, no matter what."

No really, no matter what. TC had never met a suicidal idea or ethics violation that he didn't like.

"Now. The absolute best, most important thing you can do for someone who has been injured in the field is to get them professional medical attention as soon as possible. Unfortunately, if you're, say, out on a remote hike or in the middle of a bad storm or being attacked by wild boars, that's not always an option. So sometimes you might find yourself needing to get a little creative. Anything in your environment is fair game when there's a life on the line. Anything."

Up to and including your own health and safety!

"First up: who here knows the ABCs of first aid?" TC raised his hand. "Anyone?" He looked around for any raised hands, then nodded. "For those of you who may not know, ABC in first aid stands for:" He counted them off on his fingers. "Airway, Breathing, Circulation. Does no good trying to shove air into someone if their throat's closed off. And it does no good circulating their blood if there's no oxygen in that blood to get circulating. Now, you can learn CPR from basically anyone. What your basic CPR certification class isn't going to teach you is how to make an airway when your patient doesn't have one, or how to get them blood if they're bleeding out all over the place. So, to keep your patient alive until help can arrive you need to first: make sure they have an airway. Second: make sure air is getting into that airway. And third: make sure they've got enough blood and a heartbeat to get that air through their body."

He clapped his hands and rubbed them together.

"So we're going to do a little scenario here. This is based on a true story, happened to me and some friends a few years back. Let's say, you're trapped in a sporting goods store with three injured people, all unrestrained passengers in a car crash. You're miles from the nearest trauma center, and heavy fog has closed down all the roads and is keeping the emergency helicopters grounded. You have to keep these three people alive until help can get to you, by any means necessary." He picked up a box and dumped the contents out on the floor. "These, and anything you have on you, are your supplies. Who wants to get us started?"

[supplies are moddable, things you can find at a sporting goods store ala REI. Fishing gear, ropes and climbing equipment, knives, tents, etc. Scenario is ripped right from Night Shift episode 2x02.]

Patient one

"Patient number one is a young man with a visible head lac." TC pointed to his temple. "Blood's coming down his temple, but he's awake and responsive. Unfortunately . . . he doesn't speak English. So it's a little hard to gauge his mental state or ask for other symptoms. What do you do for him?"

Patient two

"Patient number two is a young woman. No visible external injuries, but she's semiconscious and having difficulty breathing. What do you do?"

Patient three

[personal profile] hotshotdoctorman 2020-11-11 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
"Patient number three is an older man, with severe bruising on his abdomen. He's unconscious, and his pulse is thready. He's bleeding out internally. What do you do?"

Talk to TC

Ask how this went when he did it, maybe. Hear about how he nearly died serving as a blood donor for a man he thought was a coyote. . . . .

Miles took a seat very grateful that his chair wasn't unbalanced and wouldn't tip.

“Heavy fog has already caused this woman to be in one accident today,” TC said, eyebrow up. “You want to make it two?”

“Ah! Good plan.” TC smiled at her. “You may recognize his occasional words as a dialect of Spanish.”

"Well, I'm not driving. I called a professional."

Tahani might be slightly overestimating the skillset of an Uber driver.

TC just kind of gave her a long look for that, then shook his head. "Alright. So you called her an Uber. How are you going to make sure she's not dead by the time they get here?"

"Not as good as my Arabic." TC shrugged. "So . . . can't ask him complicated questions. What do you do instead?"
