Guiding the Powerful Yet Incompetent, Tuesday, Second Period

"The king has died in a 'hunting accident,'" Yennefer announced to the class. She didn't know about air quotes so she didn't do them, but they were nonetheless audible in her words. "Very tragic, so unfortunate, blah blah blah. As his idiot cousin, whose name I have quite forgotten, has not yet turned up from his mysterious disappearance, the kingdom is in a state of confusion regarding who the next king should be. You have planned for this. The time has come to introduce Princess..." Shit, she'd forgotten to give her a name. Well, none of these people would know that Cintra was a matriarchy. "Calanthe. Princess Calanthe as the next ruler of the kingdom. "You must sell it to the court. Make your speech a good one."

Did Illyana look a little disappointed that she hadn't been allowed to do the honors herself?

Absolutely.

Between Belasco and Strange, Illyana had learned the Art of the Dramatic Flair, and a quick 'step to her dorm room and back in a fraction of a second would give her the change of wardrobe she needed.

It was with a flash of bright light that she appeared next to the throne. Illyana had gone 'full Sorcerer Supreme' for this one, wearing a dress (for once, instead of jeans and hoodie), with her cape flowing from her shoulders and her Soul Staff held loosely by in her right hand, the obsidian-like stone seeming to absorb the light.

"Honored assembly," she began, her best poker-face on. "Thank you, for your swift response to this unfortunate set of circumstances. Your sense of duty to the throne does you credit."

"Given the Lord Gilbert is still missing," 'Yana put a sneer on that to imply that he had mostly likely opted for a Vegas wedding and a drug habit, and was ignoring all attempts to summon him back to the castle, "--and in dereliction of his duty, priests have been summoned and oracles cast, to determine our best course of action for the prosperous future of the country."

"As you are all aware, our beloved queen has been well-blessed by Melitele over the years, and has given our kingdom many fine, accomplished children. Now, the reason for Melitele's blessings has been made clear."

"It is my honor and joy to announce that by the all the omens and oracles, Princess Calanthe is the one true heir to the throne! She is the Queen who will bring us into a new era of peace, prosperity, and political domination of the continent. Her intelligence, gifts, and dedication to this country are beyond compare, and Melitele's favor is clear."

"The Queen Mother shall stand as Regent until Calanthe comes of age. While our prior king, may his memory live forever--" as a warning! "--tended to make all decisions himself without the input of the council of nobles," you all remembered the Tapestries Scandal that almost happened, right? She's looking at you, Tapestries Guy. "--new advisory councils for Calanthe and the Regency shall be formed, so that Calanthe may have the foremost experts on the kingdom and the world at her disposal. Arts. Sciences. Religion. With Calanthe, we shall rise to new heights unimagined previously."

Mostly because Calanthe's father was rather unimaginative about anything that didn't impact him directly.

"Praise Melitele, long live Princess Calanthe, our future queen!"
