School Assembly, Wednesday, September 15, 2020

The auditorium looked like a regular auditorium, the chairs were arranged in a normal way and Anakin was pretty sure that the chance of teddy bear maiming was extremely minimal this week! He climbed up onto the stage and strode to the rostrum. "Hello again, students, and welcome to our third week of extremely productive and life-enriching talks. This week's is brought to you by two of our esteemed business leaders from town--Beau Lionett & Yasha Nydoorin--and they are hear to discuss with you--"

He reached for the cue card the office had provided, "--Using Your Destructive Tendencies for Fun and Profit! Wait."

Too late, Anakin, here come the speakers now!

"Hey Astrid," Miles said settling down to watch the event. "What are you working on?"

"Hey, Miles," Astrid glanced over to him with a small smile. "Nothing quite yet, just trying to get a feel for what we're in for today before deciding how to try and capture it, I guess. How's it going?"

"All right, I guess," Miles said looking at the stage. "I don't see an obstacle course or giant teddy bears so I'm hoping today will be somewhat normal. Oh! And I started work on my wall yesterday. Thanks for the idea on that."
white_oleander: (yeah right over shoulder)

Astrid was glad that he'd added the second part so she didn't have to break it to him that this assembly being normal would be the least normal thing they could ask for.

And she shook her head at the thanks. "More walls around here need painting, anyway," she said. "What are you doing? Or should I just come by and see for myself?"

"Feel free to stop by anytime you want if you want to see it in person," Miles said pulling out his phone and pulling up a picture on the work in progress. "But that's about where I'm at right now."
white_oleander: (look down in sweater)

Astrid leaned in for a better look at the phone.

"Oh." She didn't know what she expected to see, but it was evident even in that single sound that she was a little surprised. And impressed.

"I definitely need to see that in person," she decided, pretty sure the picture was 't even doing it justice.

"No rush. My wall isn't going anywhere."

There was a pause as Miles contemplated if the walls at some point would go somewhere else. Because Fandom. Then he shook it off.

"So how are classes going for you?"

white_oleander: (smirking with food)

Astrid's grin grew a little, because she knew that pause. Or at least, she figured she did, because she'd thought the same thing, but would spare Miles from having to worry any extra about disappearing walls. Especially since she didn't want her own wall disappearing, and saying it always felt like some kind of invitation.

"They're going well," she said. "I almost have my paper for French class done, Thinking on your Feet continues to be a fascinating behavioral exploration, science class has been..." This week's class in particular made her breath catch maybe just slightly for remembering, "great, but I think Kyōraku-San's tomorrow is my favorite... "

She tilted her head thoughtfully at him.

"What about yours? Are you tired of writing essays for science class yet?"

She sometimes noticed things like that.

Miles sighed. He'd hoped that had gone unnoticed in general. "Yeah well, I think the only class I feel comfortable in is my government class honestly," Miles admitted. "And if there's a science class that doesn't involved being transformed into something else or jumping off into the vastness of space I might consider trying that out."

white_oleander: (slightly serious)

"Just wait until your next semester," Astrid offered, the encouragement in her grin a little wry. "That's about how long it took me to sort of...get it, I guess. And there's still moments..."

There had been a few other factors with the volcano, too, like, god, that timing, but still...

"But then you'll be leaping into space and turning into dinosaurs with the best of us."

"Yeah. We'll see about that I guess," Miles said, forcing a smile. "Talking with Elli the other day it doesn't feel like I'm completely alone in that regard."

white_oleander: (white cuteness)

Re: Arrive and Mingle

[personal profile] white_oleander 2020-09-16 07:07 pm (UTC)(link)
"Elli's actually my little sibling," Astrid admitted a bit guilty. "I...don't think I did a very good job of making her feel very comfortable, though..."

Which was definitely why she skipped out on that this time around.

"But, like I said, it took me about a semester before it felt a little more normal. So yeah, there's at least a few of us."

She gave a soft laugh. "Maybe we could start a club."

"Is that for therapy or just to commiserate?" Miles joked. "And I don't think you're doing a bad job as a sibling. Talking to you has definitely made me feel less freaked out. I think with Elli and I we're just freaked out in general."

white_oleander: (i'm intrigued....)

"Aren't they sort of the same thing?" Astrid shot back lightly, before just giving a faint shrug. "And maybe..."

She did have some pretty big things besides Fandom to be freaked out about when she was in their shoes, too...

"I'm glad I could help, though. And that neither of you are just constantly trying to run down the causeway screaming."

Check in with him in two weeks, Astrid and you might find the story will be different.

"Well so far nothing has been chasing me so I guess that's a bonus. Does this place even have school clubs?" Miles asked. "Because I think that doesn't sound like half-bad idea"

white_oleander: (yeah right over shoulder)

Re: Arrive and Mingle

[personal profile] white_oleander 2020-09-16 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
"What?" asked Astrid. "A 'We're Too Normal For This Crap' Club?"

She wasn't actually so sure she'd qualify, though, even without the time traveler stuff, but she was also pretty good at faking it...

"I guess you could go to talk to the dean or something about that, if you wanted something official, but it wouldn't be hard to put together something unofficially, either. Just pick a time and a place and spread the word..."

Mikes shrugged. “Actually I’m just a fan of showing up for Wayne’s breakfast on Mondays and commiserating there.”

"That is a pretty good place for it," Astrid admitted, "especially since it comes with food. I've been kind of skipping them this semester, though, in favor of getting more sleep before science class."
