Cupcake Skirmishes, Thursday 8/13

Yesterday’s shenanigans had inspired Stark to plan for cupcakes that smelled fresh and delightful and absolutely nothing like that grease covered pole. Don’t worry, no lard or fish guts or leftover grease here. Especially no fish guts.

That’s why Stark was at the front of the room with the covered box of secret ingredients. Although you might be able to tell by the smell what today’s ingredient was before it was revealed.

“Welcome back. Today we have another variety of ingredients. All related but not all the same.” He removed the towel and began removing items from the box. “Mints! Candies and more candies and extracts and mint cookies and fresh mint leaves.”

Once he was done removing them there were packages of Thin Mints, mint Oreos, Andes candies, crushed peppermints, mint flavored chocolate chips, fresh mint leaves, peppermint and mint extracts ~~and some other moddable stuff~~.

“Some people like mint with chocolate. Some do not. You might also try vanilla and mint, or lemon and mint, or white chocolate and mint since that’s not at all the same as dark or milk chocolate. As always there are clean aprons available, your ovens are preheated, and feel free to team up if you wish.”

There definitely were a lot of directions someone could go with this one, and part of Astrid wanted to go really out of the box, but, ultimately, she decided she wanted to do a nice plain vanilla cupcake but with crushed up pieces of the Andes mints mixed in, which wasn't all that special, but she wanted to pay more attention (of course) to her icing: a careful swirl of brown chocolate icing with some nice green mint icing, garnished with a couple of mint leaves.

Simple. But she was really proud of them.

There was a definite lightness to Liam's demeanor that hadn't really been there in previous weeks. Not that he'd been depressed or anything, but there'd been an undercurrent of... something. That was now gone.

He was maybe even humming to himself as he got to work on some mint cupcakes with cream cheese icing.

Steve smiled at him. "I heard you have a human wife again."

Such a normal sentence!

"Thank god," Liam breathed. "Otherwise introductions at the picnic would've been really weird."

Steve burst out laughing. "They'd think you were off your rocker."

"Not exactly the positive first impression I try to make as someone responsible for people's well-being," Liam said drily.

"Hello, I'm the sheriff, and this is my wife, currently a woodland animal?" Steve tried out. "That probably wouldn't fly with most new people, no, and the ones who would be okay with it are the ones you should watch."

"I suppose there's people from worlds where that kind of thing is actually sort of normal," Liam had to allow. "Like that one kid who's always turning into animals during the school trips." Keyleth, Liam. Her name was Keyleth. You absolutely knew that.

"Keyleth!" Steve said, who had a memory for names.

"That's the one," Liam nodded. "Kinda skittish, but a good kid." Also pretty handy in a fight, if sometimes a little overzealous with the magic.

"They're all good kids," Steve said with a smile. "Some just need a little more guidance."

"True enough," Liam said. "Which, if you'd told me three years ago I'd be one of the people offering said guidance, I would've laughed. And laughed."

Steve's smile widened. "What did you think you'd be doing here instead?"

Liam shrugged. "No idea," he admitted. "Which was kind of the point. I'd never really had the chance to just have a life of my own, before."

"I understand that," Steve said, nodding. "How'd you like it?"

"It was different," Liam conceded. "Took a while to get used to- not having a purpose, I guess?" Last year, especially, he'd really struggled with that. "On the other hand, not constantly having to worry about coworkers figuring out who," or what, "I really am is relaxing."

Steve smiled. "I still have a bunch of obligations," he admitted, "but having people see past the Cap persona is a problem at home."

"I'm legally dead back home, so no obligations, but getting spotted would be weird so I've tried to stay as low-key as possible the few times I've gone back," Liam said, making a face. "But having people expect you to be 'Captain America' all the time sounds exhausting."

"It is sometimes," Steve admitted. "It's fine with little kids, but the fanboying from grown adults can be a lot."

"And then there's the ones who look at you like they're picturing you in their bed."

Sorry, Steve. Sometimes Liam had a tendency to be a bit on the blunter side.

Steve made a face. "They're so grabby, too."

Liam’s face mirrored Steve’s own, because ugh.

“The first time I ran into someone like that I had no idea what was going on, or what I was supposed to do.” Liam confessed, looking a little sheepish.

Steve gave him an equally sheepish look. "I was in the wrong century," he said. "They'd only ever looked like that at my pal Bucky, and even then anything above a kiss was very fresh."

It took Liam a moment to remember what Steve had told him about being pretty sickly before he'd gotten all superhero-y, because Steve now was so obviously worth a second look. And a third. And- well, that was part of the problem, wasn't it? "Us twenty-first century folks are downright scandalous," he deadpanned.

"That's what I've learned," Steve said, smiling as he blushed. "Tony takes special pleasure in pushing the boundaries."

Liam couldn’t help the teasing little grin that appeared at that. “I’m sure that bothers you terribly.”

"Depends on where he decides to push," Steve said.

Liam blinked, expression turning somewhat more serious. “Really?”

"He likes making me blush," Steve said, "which isn't all that difficult, as you might have noticed."

Steve was an absolute sucker for anything chocolate, so he did a chocolate cupcake with an Andes mint stuffed inside, covered in chocolate mint ganache.

They were mostly ganache, but he was terribly proud of them.
