Return of Fandom Gladiators; Thursday, Third Period [07/16].

The arena that week was set up in a big pit and there were several large metal ball cages just waiting for some ~~victims~~ gladiators to be put inside of them, so this should be fun.

"Today," she informed the class, "we do the Atlasphere, which is basically just an excuse to roll around in big metal cage balls. There are five slightly raised scoring pods on the field; your goal is to try and activate as many of them as possible in the allotted time by rolling your atlasphere onto it. You'll know you got it because it'll emit smoke into your atlasphere when done right, then move on to the next and try to prevent the others from scoring more points. You've got five minutes to gear up and get settled in your sphere, then then we're off. And there's something special for the gladiators who get the most points next week, so that's your insentive to win...other than, you know, winning being awesome.

"Questions?"

Unless there are questions or objections, one of which will be handle much more graciously than the other.

(But probably not by much).

Duke didn't remember signing up for this class. But the moose had shown up while he was heading to the diner today and herded him quite firmly over, so apparently he'd signed up for this class.

He was pretty sure Rosa would use it as an excuse to murder him, somehow.

On the count of three, push off of your platforms into the area and have at it! Since it's a bigger space with more competitors, there's a score pad on each side of the pit as well as one in the middle. Careful not to get stuck! No, no, you'll definitely get stuck at least a few times. Or just roll around trying to run into the other gladiators. Rosa would definitely find this an acceptable strategy.

Do your thing, roll around, have fun (or hate every moment of it), but the RNG has decided that THE CHOSEN ONE wins again with the most points, followed by the Hammer, Dragon's Bane, the Axe, Justice, Owen, Cap, Sabine, Julius, the Xelayan, Elli, and Duke.

Breq did not try the strategy of running into other gladiators, but that didn't mean she didn't occasionally get stuck. She did ok, and it was good exercise, which seemed to be the case in these classes to far, even if last week hadn't gone too well.

It was impossible not to love Big Giant Metal Ball day!

"Still waiting on that upgrade on these babies to add spikes!" Amaya called out cheerfully, and then set about being a Hammer in a Cage with absolute No Mercy.

Honestly? She was really feeling like she needed something le this week, too.

Duke was doing very badly at this.

At least in part because Duke was not trying at this.

He got the ball rolling halfheartedly, managed to get it up onto a single score pad, nearly choked on the smoke, and then promptly got himself stuck, at which point he just kind of sat down and glared at the bars for awhile.

Look, just because the cage was a sphere didn't mean it wasn't a cage. The whole "just a hamster spinning a wheel" feeling wasn't helping his mood any, either.

Alara was finding that steering the ball seemed to be her main issue and despite her difficulties, with it she was still surprised by how much she was actually enjoying it.

This was quickly becoming Grog's favorite class. Once he got the hang of moving the ball around, he was equally focused on banging into the others as he was actually earning points. It really was a very satisfying clang noise!

Tempting as it was to be out there on the field herself, she was being nice this week and just settling back with a coffee and enjoying the damn show.

Duke was not interpreting that as her being "nice", no. But then, Duke was never going to interpret anything she did as "nice".

"So this is what you're doing now instead of being a cop, huh?"

"It's one of the things I'm doing now," said Rosa, who was still in some kind of weird denial about being a teacher despite it having been well over two years now. "Nice of you to join us this week, Crocker. You did great out there."

"Yeah, I was great. I'd apologize for not being here last week, but I wasn't in Fandom last week. And I had no idea I was signed up for it."

Was it unprofessional to say that he could have continued to not be here?

It was probably unprofessional to say that he could have continued to not be here.

"You could have just continued to not be here."

WHAT?

Although, honestly, she actually was glad he did show up, because watching that was incredible, to the point where it almost outweighed any irritation at having to actually be in the same room as him.

What a conundrum.

“Tell that to the moose.” Duke shook his head. “Besides, I need to support your non-cop lifestyle.”

"Gross," said Rosa.

About Duke's support, not the non-cop thing, because quitting the force(s) was turning out to be one of the best decisions Rlsa had ever made for herself. Just think of all the fraudulent art dealing fox reports she wouldn't be filing on Monday!

"You and that moose've really got some issues to resolve," she added. "And I thought you loved cops now. Or was that just cop," she emphasized the P, "singular?"

"I had no idea you were so invested in my love life," Duke said. "I'd've offered you regular updates if I knew. And then you'd know that Danny and I have managed to become friends despite him being a cop. And mostly because he wouldn't leave me alone."

Much like the moose! Or what Duke was doing to Rosa, really.

"That sounds healthy," Rosa noted, before she went ahead and agreed with the narrative.

"Is that why you're not leaving me alone right now, Crocker? You wanna be my," a brow lifted, "friend?"

"Hey, someone's got to reintroduce you to the civilian side of life," Duke said breezily. And shrugged. "Or at least keep you on your very, very grumpy toes."

Look, pretty people who hated him were kind of like catnip for Duke, okay?

Yeah. The complete lack of denial in that response was not reassuring.

"I think I'll manage," Rosa said dryly. She would be (ohgod) living with a civilian now, even! (Help). "You need me to call the moose to help you find the door?"

"Nah," Duke said, shrugging. "Swing by the diner sometime. Non-cops sometimes drink free."

Yeah, but then she might have to sometimes deal with him.

"I'll keep that in mind," she said, in the exact tone of someone who had already disregarded it completely.

Well. Not completely.

Because, after a beat, her forehead furrowed a little and she said, "You know I'm still the same asshole, just without a badge now, right?"

"Yeah, but you're an asshole without the authority to arrest me if I really piss you off." Duke shrugged. "Sometimes that seems to make all the difference."

WHY AM I SO TIRED THIS MORNING??
