Fandom High Graduation Ceremony, Class of 2020, Early Saturday Evening [Part 2]

As the last diploma was handed out, there was a moment of quiet as those who had attended one of these ceremonies before waited to see what would happen.

Then, when Zoe got up to usher everyone away, the lawn was suddenly full of the island's animals--squirrels, teal deer, alots, even a few gremlins--carrying signs bearing what could only be described as squirrel handwriting.

"'We... want hats too?' 'Haberdashery for all?' Are you [microphone feedback] kidding me?!"

An angry woodchuck pushed through the squirrels and chucked a piece of wood at her, and as the barrier came down separating the graduates from the crowd, anyone close enough could probably hear, "That's not why you're called woodchucks!"

Hey, you're not the ones being attacked by animals with sharp signs. That's good, right?

Duke was just going to hang out in the back of the audience, facepalming for the rest of eternity.

So help him, if he ended up teaching Squirrel Haberdashery. . . .

In general, Rosa just came to these things because it was a point toward her actually doing teacher things and also because how could you not get a kick out of whatever nonsense was thrown at the graduates, and that meant not really interacting with anyone if she could help it, but not even she had the willpower to avoid side-eyeing Duke when the animals stormed in with their very particular demands with a snort.

Duke didn't even seem to look up.

"Can it, Diaz."

Rosa (and her currently rebelling smirk control) just lifted her hands without a word, as if to emphasize just how much she was, in fact, canning it.

Which wasn't easy, Crocker. It wasn't easy at all. But sometimes mere words just couldn't cut it anyway.

"I can feel you smirking."

Could he feel her shrugging, too? Because that's what Rosa was going to do, just shrug, because what else could she do? He told her to can it; he didn't say anything about not smirking.

And smirks were rare; he could only be so lucky!

Duke sighed.

"Shouldn't you be trying to keep the peace or something, officer?"

"The only crime I see here," Rosa stated, "is that I didn't bring any popcorn.

"Or maybe," she offered, "I should try to get to the bottom of this, and look toward the source of where all this trouble started. Far as I see it, these animals are just expressing some clear bias and inequity in..."

Yeah, she was mildly regretting having bitten on this one.

"...their civil...hat...rights...."

"That mean you're going to yell at the moose again? Because then I'll need popcorn."

"Passing the buck, I see," said Rosa. "Or, in this case...the moose."

That sounded better in her head.

"Athough now you have me wondering if the moose has some sort of bird-superiority agenda, and I am remembering why I don't talk to you."

Well, one of the reasons, anyway.

"And here I thought it was because you couldn't handle my sparkling wit."

"Oh, yeah," said Rosa dryly, "you're just a regualr diamond mine, digging up gems like that."

"Well, not all of us can come up with bon mots like 'civil hat rights'."

"Brilliant," said Rosa, "I know. They should have hired me to write their signs. It's okay to be jealous. It's only natural."

"Now now, this is their fight. Wouldn't do to take their glory away from them."

"Says the man at the very center of the haberdashery exclusion that started all this," Rosa noted, with a tilt of her eyes, an accusatory squint of her eyes.

"I was just a figurehead," Duke said. "There to make sure no one, student or avian, got hurt."

"Go, Prompto!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" Nina hollered. "Remember!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You're a professional!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Then she cracked up laughing so hard that she had to sit back down.

Oh my gosh.

And Gladio, who was definitely not holding back a laugh badly with a grin, side-eyed at Nina.

"Is this 'doom'-y enough for you?"

"Only," she said, giggling, "if they make the hats on the stage!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

It was perfect.

Bless, she loved it.

If you really think about it, it wasn't fair that the birds got all the attention when it came to headwear, right?

If you don't agree, there's some creatures that would like to argue with you, probably through stomping and biting.

"You know what?" Tip said, bending down to get closer to eye level with the critters (and watching those signs). "That's a good point! Equal headgear for all!"

. . . What?

Animals. Storming the lawn. Demanding...hats.

Prompto gasped.

"My time to shine has come!" he announced, bolting to his feet, feeling very much like this was some sort of destiny that had befallen him from that first fashion class when he'd just arrived and....well, the one other class that was very, very topical, but still!

"Quick! Someone get me some faux leather, some thimbles, and some very strong needles! Wayne! Go to the shelter and let the pups know we need to borrow their bin of hats! It's a....fashion emergency!"

Did he actually expect Wayne to go get the bin of hats that had slowly been building over the semester? Not really. But that wasn't the point.

"If I may," said Sidon, flashing his best grin, "my dear woodland animals of this island, suggest but one very important thing to consider: if you're anything like myself, you may actually find that hats," and here he doffed his mortarboard and tossed it to the nearest alot, though it was, unsurprisingly, intercepted by a teal dear, "much like clothing," to prove his point, the robe would have to go, too, "is highly overrated!"

He was, of course, incredibly biased, but he figured his enthusiasm and shirking of such material objects could rally at least a few of these poor beleagured critters!

Yeah, this was definitely something that would never happen after passing one's aptitudes.

Tisarwat was considering just generally ignoring this, since the other seemed to have it pretty well handled, but, unable to help herself, she did chance to venture, at a woodchuck that was getting uncomfortably close with its protesting, "You know, hats are nice, I'll agree with you all there, but have you considered maybe what you really need are gloves?"

She was...mostly joking.

After the dust has settled... well, congrats folks, you've officially survived this high school experience. Meet up with your friends and family, and get a well-deserved soda because you're still underage. Woo!

Duke would like it to be known that THIS IS NOT HIS FAULT.

(While I cackle in delight.)

Totally not his fault. Who knew animals were so sensitive? :D
