There were no birds in bird class today. Instead, the classroom was full of little, fluffy, wavy haired puppies, each wearing a little collar reading "I'M A BIRD!"

"Cockapoos," Duke said. "These cute, slightly confused little suckers are going to get cloches." The puppy in his lap leaned its head up and licked his chin. Duke snorted and shifted his face out of reach, scrubbing at the puppy's ears. "Have fun, and try not to get smothered in slobber."

Ulysses was absolutely playing with the dogs.

Kinda grinning like an idiot at them, too. Shut up, puppies were superior to people, that was just a stone cold fact.

If you're willing to interrupt his baby talking to the puppy on his lap.

Nina was super not going to interrupt his baby talking to the puppy.

She was, though, going to poke her head into his class room and, upon seeing him, heaving a sigh of relief.

Okay, good. He was fine!

... and maybe she was going to see if she couldn't get a vid of him baby talking the puppy. Because adorable.

Duke caught sight of her out of the corner of his eye, and looked up with a little smile. "Nina. How's it going?"

"Oh, you know, up to mayhem??????????????????????" she said, smiling innocently and like she wasn't here just to check up on him, honest.

Despite the fact that she'd said she'd be doing just that on radio.

Consistency was boring.

"Mayhem's good," Duke said. "Sorry for missing your class on Monday. I hope you had fun."

"I missed it myself," Nina admitted ~~since there had been RL things~~, "but, like, that just means that you didn't miss anything in breakfast land!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Though, like, the island does keep trying to turn all my scenarios into blanket land instead……………."

She was glad she'd filmed the latest season of Sir Foomy the Brave before this had really gotten going.

"Yeah, the island's been going nuts with the blanket forts." The puppy tried to lick its way up his nose and Duke leaned out of the way again. "And apparently cuddly puppies."

"And stuffed animals," Nina agreed. "Which, like, I'm not complaining about but I'm still kind of waiting for them to all go evil or something................"

Duke sighed. “Wow, I hope they don’t. I’ve had enough getting attacked by toys for . . . ever.”

"Me too," she said fervently. "But, like, on the bright side, this has been going on longer than a week and the terrible things don't usually last longer than that, so.............."

So they might be okay!

"Is it weird that I've been here long enough that I don't even blink at terrible things having a distinct timeline? I feel like that should be concerning."

"I mean, like, if you were really concerned about things like that, would you really have stuck around???????????????????" she asked, honestly curious.

"Honestly, I'm still surprised I stuck around at all. This is actually longer than I've lived anywhere in . . . my entire adult life."

"Like, you like travelling????????????????" she wondered. "As a pirate???????????????"

Since he had a boat and all.

"Not technically a pirate," Duke said. "I'm in imports and exports." He was a pirate. He was just one who preferred to run away rather than sack, pillage, or kill. "But yeah, I got my boat and hit the seas and never really looked back."

Octavia hadn't been to the preserve in a while, but this morning she was there.

And so Duke was getting a photo of the furry fish in the stream.

Duke grinned at the photo, showing it to the puppy who had still not left his lap, then held out his phone to grab a selfie with himself and the dog.

Duke sent her a photo of the crowd of dogs in the classroom.

Octavia wasn't much of a dog person - she didn't really have enough experience with dogs for that - but right now she kind of felt like one.

She sent back a shot of where she was standing: just trees as far as the eye could see.

A lot less crowded than your classroom. Quiet

sounds nice, Duke sent back. romantic!

Look, his most recent woods experience had been very romance focused. It was probably lucky that he didn't get turned on just looking at trees right now.

Octavia snorted and shook her head, even though there was no one to see or hear her.

He knew how much she enjoyed her alone time with the trees.

I'd say they say hi back but they're still not talking

And thank fuck for that, honestly. Octavia took a moment to glance around, considering something. Then she decided to go for it.

She wasn't very practiced in taking selfies, but the end result was decent. More trees in the background, but also her, with her tiny lopsided smile and her freshly braided hair.

I say hi though. lunch tomorrow?

Duke texted back a heart-eye emoji. And saved the photo to his phone to treasure forever.

He did not expect her to have anything in particular to request, no.

He knew her so well.
