Keeping Your Advantage: Terrain & You, Monday, Period 1
"Good morning," Ghanima said as everyone arrived in the Danger Shop. "Today, we are going somewhere slightly warmer than last week."
"Rainforests are forests characterized by high rainfall, with definitions setting minimum normal annual rainfall between 1750–2000 mm. The monsoon trough, alternately known as the intertropical convergence zone, plays a significant role in creating Earth's tropical rain forests. 40 to 75% of all species on the world's habitats are indigenous to the rainforests. It has been estimated that many millions of species of plants, insects, and microorganisms are still undiscovered. Tropical rainforests have been called the "jewels of the Earth", and the "world's largest pharmacy", because over one quarter of natural medicines have been discovered there. Rainforests are also responsible for 28% of the world's oxygen turn over, often misunderstood as oxygen production, processing it through photosynthesis from carbon dioxide and storing it as carbon through biosequestration."
"A tropical rainforest is a biome found within 10 degrees north or south of the equator. They are common in Asia, Australia, Africa, South America, Central America, Mexico and on many of the Pacific Islands. Minimum normal annual rainfall between 1,750 millimetres and 2,000 millimetres occurs in this climate region. Mean monthly temperatures exceed 18 °C during all months of the year."
"The rainforests are home to more species or populations than all other biomes added together. 80% of the world's biodiversity are found in tropical rainforests. The leafy tops of tall trees - extending from 50 to 85 meters above the forest floor - forms an understory. Organic matter that falls to the forest floor quickly decomposes, and the nutrients are recycled."
"Tall, broad-leaved evergreen trees are the dominant plants, forming a leafy canopy over the forest floor. Taller trees, called emergents, may rise above the canopy. The upper portion of the canopy often supports a rich flora of epiphytes, including orchids, bromeliads, mosses, and lichens, who live attached to the branches of trees. The undergrowth or understory in a rain forest is often restricted by the lack of sunlight at ground level, and generally consists of shade-tolerant shrubs, herbs, ferns, small trees, and large woody vines which climb into the trees to capture sunlight. The relatively sparse under story vegetation makes it possible for people and other animals to walk through the forest. If the leaf canopy is destroyed or thinned, the ground beneath is soon colonized by a dense, tangled growth of vines, shrubs, and small trees called a jungle."
"Today you have two options. You can wander around the ground level, looking for medicinals and various creatures and plants, or you can climb the trees"

Re: During the Lecture
In his defense, though, he had woken up with a few...other concerns that morning. But at least (at least!) this wasn't his first time as a girl, but it was his first time as a girl still thinking he was a boy!
Oh, Fandom.
Re: During the Lecture
Was Vette flashing her phone and taking a photo of groaning Prompto? You betcha!
"You can borrow this if you want," she added, holding it up and waving it around. "You know you want to take holorecordings of this place."
Re: During the Lecture
Then he laughed and went to rub the back of his neck, remembered all the hair he had their now, and just sort of wound up fluffing it out a bit.
"Y'know," he said, "I was going to point out that I at least have my phone with me, but then you had to go and throw holorecordings in there, and..."
He put out a hand; it quickly became a grabby hand. "Gimme!"
Re: During the Lecture
Vette gave a soft laugh and tossed her phone his way.
"Enjoy," she chirped. "Make sure you get my good side if you aim that thing at me, okay?"
Re: During the Lecture
And she deserved it, too! It was gonna be such payback for her running off for more than a week and not even answering any of her texts in the meantime!
Not that he was starting to get worried or anything, though...
Re: During the Lecture
A beat. A small bit of fret.
"Has she replied to any of your texts yet? Because she hasn't replied to mine." Another beat. "And she took off with my jacket. I have to use hers on the cold days."
A beat.
"So many ruffles."
Re: During the Lecture
But he trailed off a little, catching his lower lip between his teeth. That should make him feel better, right, that it wasn't just him? That Nina wasn't responding to Vette's texts either? But it didn't. It really, really didn't.
"But yeah," he said, shaking his head, looking down a little. "She hasn't replied to mine, either. So I mean, I guess...whatever she's working on must be keeping her really busy. Or something she's got to be, like, super sneaky about, y'know?"
All other possibilities were not to even start to be considered, dammit!
Re: During the Lecture
Oh, she'd been worried for like a week, now.
Re: During the Lecture
"Either way," he charged forward, "whatever the reason, I'm sure she'll be back soon."
Re: During the Lecture
Vette was absolutely the sort of person to let Foomy go through another 'peanut butter and jelly demon' stage out of spite if Nina worried them both for too long.
Re: During the Lecture
But his head tilted slightly, his expression going wary.
"What even happens when he does eat peanut butter, anyway?" he ventured.
Re: During the Lecture
"Oh, he just gets a brown swirl for a while," Vette replied, shrugging. "It happened once and Nina was devastated. This little pink blob with a peanut butter stripe, it was truly tragic."
Truly.
Re: During the Lecture
A long, looooooooong pause, and Prompto blinked his pretty, pretty blue eyes.
"....That's it?" he asked, sounding even more shrilly incredulous than he intended, because, you know, his voice and all.
Re: During the Lecture
"That," Vette replied, "is it. Between you and me, I think he really likes peanut butter. He's attempted to steal my sandwiches a few times. But a brown stripe, Prompto! He won't go with any of her stuff!"
... Vette was grinning, at least. Look, she clearly didn't find it so tragic, either. But Nina had her priorities.
Re: During the Lecture
Re: During the Lecture
"... See," Vette noted, "this is a beautiful plan, but you're missing one very important detail, Prompto."
She spread her hands.
"I live with her! She has access to my cat!"
Her naked, naked cat.
Re: During the Lecture
A beat.
"Actually, now that I say it outloud, she'd probably find a spell to do just that. But it's okay! I'll take full responsibility! You can claim complete innocence and that I must have snuck in to do it. I mean, I've snuck into your room before, I could totally do it again."
Re: During the Lecture
See Vette. See Vette squint thoughtfully.
Squint, Vette, Squint.
"I'm listening."
Re: During the Lecture
Re: During the Lecture
Vette gasped a little, going wide-eyed.
"We weren't even talking!"
Another gasp.
"Who even are you?!"
And then she was breaking into a small fit of giggles.
Re: During the Lecture
Re: During the Lecture
"Remember," Vette called after him, "my good side!"
It was a holo. It got all sides.
