Shop Class, Monday
Sam stood in front of the room, and surveyed the class. "Hey guys. I hope you all got my e-mail, because I'm going to try something a little different today. As you know, we've been trying to think our way out of situations based on what's available in the junkyard. Unfortunately, we don't always have a handy junkyard available."
"Today's project deals with survival in different environments. When we did the survival kit project before, the environment ended up being fairly mild and relatively hospitable." She glanced over at Kawalsky and rolled her eyes at him. "Unfortunately, if you're fighting for survival, it's very seldom going to be in a lovely wooded area with a pond and fishing."
"Soo...." she drawled, leaning against the workbench, "you have your survival kits, which have been magically replenished since last time," Sam gestured towards an array of objects beside her, "and you can replace one of the things in your kit with one of the things on the table, if you want. Assignment's the same, though--you have to obtain or create food, fire, or shelter, enough to keep you safe through the night, even if you're only going to be out there until the class ends."
"Any questions?"
[ooc: Posted ahead of time so people can play while I'm sleeping and at work. If you didn't make a survival kit last time, pick five things that your character would have put in it (and conceivably could have bought for around $20) and call it their survival kit. On the table is an almost infinite array of things that could replace an item in your kit, but only *one* may be chosen. Post your character to the environmental thread of your choice, and if you want interaction with Sam, I'll get back to you around 6 pm EDT tomorrow.)

The Jungle
Re: The Jungle
"How very juvenile.
The voice is close and John whips around, holding a Twinkie as a weapon. There's nothing there but he keeps the Twinkie at the ready.
"Use the blanket for shelter.
"Shut up," John mumbles, swinging the Twinkie around. "I don't need advice."
But, he ends up using the blanket as a shelter of sort, keeping it up with large sticks.
"We could be partners, you and I.
"Shut up," he says again and shakes his head. "Go away. I have my Twinkies to talk to."

Still hasn't put the Twinkie down.

Xander sets up a totally cheaty shelter against anything that might fall out of the trees on him, staking the tarp out with, well, stakes, and twisted-up duct tape for ropes. He scouts out some dry wood, finds his way back to his campsite with his totally cheapass compass, builds a fire with matches and lighter fluid, and... okay, toasts Twinkies over it on a stick, as he sits in the opening of his shelter.
Still? He's spent worse fake-nights.

He decides to swap out his poncho (http://community.livejournal.com/fandomhigh/613525.html?thread=29901717#t29901717) for a real tarp this time so he can actually make a decent shelter. He strings up the tarp with the fishing wire and starts a fire with his matches to make himself some more of the instant Miso soup he has in his kit.
As for the snakes? Well, if the fire doesn't keep them away, Duo's glad he's wearing his favorite thick boots; if he has to stomp on any snakes it'll make the task less gross.

The Desert
Re: The Desert
Behind on life, againStark chose the desert. Mostly because it was warm there and it was sure it would not slow there. Having swapped the instant coffee in his kit for a blanket, he attempted to make himself moderately comfortable.Finding some large cacti plants that were fairly close together he stuck the blanket to the cacti (luckily, cacti are pointy). Instant shelter! From the sun and from wind or sand in another direction as well.
Then he sat in his little blanket and cacti hut and chewed thoughtfully on some beef jerky. He had a drink, for now, but wasn't sure what he'd do after the tea was gone. Luckily, class wasn't long enough for him to have to find out.

The Tundra
Re: The Tundra
because it matches the warmth of her heart *emosob*and stamps around in the snow wearing the boots Blair had given her (she had taken the numerous layers email rather seriously) for a while before digging herself a shelter and managing to get a fire lit despite the numbing cold. She was Russian like that. Now, for food. Couldn't she just go back to bed and curl into a little ball? Instead she crawled into her cozy little snowfort to think. Honest. She was thinking. She wasn't taking a nap. Nope.

nappingthinking. She left the girl alone, though she did think about handing over a blanket and pillow.Underwater
