Keeping Your Advantage: Terrain & You, Monday, Period 1

As per usual, Ghanima's classroom had ditched the standard desk set-up for divans, cushions, oversized chairs and other non-school-standard seating. Ghanima herself was sitting on her desk, absently eating lemon drops as she watched the students wander into the room. Once the last of them had arrived, her face lit up with a smile.

"Well now," she said, her voice carrying effortlessly. "Some of you look rather familiar!"

Ghanima was not sure if it was a mark of approval in her choice in subject matter, or if her students were simply masochists.

She was not ruling out either option.

"For those of you that are new, I am Lady Ghanima Atreides, and this is 'Keeping Your Advantage: Terrain & You.' If you have not had one of my classes before, you may call me Lady Ghanima, Miss Ghanima, or Miss Atreides, whichever you are more comfortable with. The first person to call me Lady Atreides gets detention," Ghanima announced, smiling. "Lady Atreides is my grandmother, and I will not answer to it."

"This is a class intended to give you a basic grounding in the varying types of terrain you may encounter." Ghanima hopped off her desk to take a seat on the floor with everyone else. "The simple fact that you are at this school is testimony to the fact that you never know where you may find yourself."

"From cityscapes to icebergs, each week we will look at a different type of terrian, and one thing you can do to make your life easier. Please be aware that there is no syllabus to this class, because I don't want you to have time to prepare for each scenario. Many times you will have to work with only the things you have on you during an emergency, and learning to keep your wits about you is important."

"First, however, I'd like you all to introduce yourselves. Name, rank, how long you've been at Fandom, and type of terrain you are most familiar with. If anyone is interested in a TA position, see me after class."

"You. Start."

Short, sweet, and to the point.

"I was unavoidably detained at home last week ~~because my player slept through her day off~~ for some negotiations, so humor me. What should I call you, how long you've been at Fandom, and type of terrain you are most familiar with."

"Uh, I'm Grog and I've been in Fandom for like, two weeks now?" he said. "I'm familiar with... well, lots of things that aren't cities. My herd traveled all over the place--cold and wet and hot and dry--but living in a town is still kind of new, I only did that for a little while before I got here."

It was probably a good thing that Ghanima had long ago ditched the classroom desks, if she was going to continue to collect very large students like this.

"Did you have a favorite type of place to roam, Grog?" she asked. "Anything you liked more than the others?"

Grog definitely appreciated having a pillow to sit on, and not just because it made him feel super fancy.

"I like forests, because there's usually animals to hunt and wood to make good fires and safe places to set up camp," he said. "Honestly, I just like anything that's not super hot. I'm built for the cold."

"My name is Kuroko Shirai. You can just call me Kuroko, and I'm new here, too. I guess I've basically spent my whole life in cities? Aside from holidays to the beach or the mountains or something like that, and those were never super common."

"Welcome, Kuroko," Ghanima said. "What type of cities are you most familiar with? Suburbs? Small towns? Or large metropolises?"

"Oh, bit cities. I grew up in Academy City, and it's crazy huge. Just the population of students there is around 2.3 million."

Which kind of made sense for a place called "academy" city.

"I'm Lana Beniko," Lana smiled and bowed to Ghanima. "I've been here for one year now, and I'm most familiar with the desert and tombs, especially for fighting. I'm from a huge city, though, so I'm a bit familiar with that, too."

"Welcome back, Miss Beniko," Ghanima said. "I had not considered tomb-raiding, but, perhaps that was an oversight on my end."

Congratulations, students! Ghanima's got a new idea for class!

"Feel free to skip it," Lana said, making a face. Or at least skip the murderous ghosts. The tombs themselves weren't the worst part.

"I'm Juillenne. Jules is fine. This," she nodded at the mountain cat by her side. "Is Camden. I arrived on this island at the beginning of the summer, and I grew up in a coastal fishing village, so I've been on boats since before I could walk. I'm also fairly familiar with navigating and hunting in forest terrain."

Well now. It had been awhile since Ghanima had a pairing like this in her classes.

"Hello Jules, Camden," she said, addressing each of them individually. "The island is not a large town, so hopefully it will feel at least somewhat familiar."

"When we eventually deal with water, I may call upon you to help with anyone that has not encountered the ocean before. I speak from experience when I say it can be incredibly daunting to those of us from places without large bodies of water."

She's around, before and after class!

And just when class was wrapping up, Liam stopped by, a tray with two hot chocolates and two cinnamon buns with pumpkin spice icing in hand.

“Hey,” he greeted, leaning against the doorway.

"Liam!" Ghanima's smile instantly went from 'professional teacher' to 'utterly delighted,' as she made grabby-hands at the treats. "I hope those are not all for you."

Sometimes, Ghani was very much a brat.

“They absolutely are,” Liam deadpanned. “I am hoarding all this sugar for myself.” Sometimes, he could be equally bratty.
