US Government (Friday, March 31, 4th period)

"Hope you've all brought your bills with you for class discussion," Josh said when the Government class was seated.

"Pretend you are Senators from your home states. If you're not from this country, um, pretend that you're from Illinois. Because things need to play well in Peoria, right?" He laughed.

Yes, he's an enormous dork. Moving on.

"Ask question of the bill's sponsor--decide if this is something that your voters would support. Heck, you're the elected representative of them--decide if it's something you support."

He grinned. "And in keeping with the rules of the Senate, no name calling or hair-pulling. Long and boring speeches are encouraged."

He sat down and pointed at random to a student. "Let's get started. Wow me."

Isabel presented a bill that would standardize food labels. Unlike the current bill (http://www.dailykos.com/story/2006/3/8/235446/7995) now being considered by the Senate, because the House of Reps okayed it, the bastards! which would strip labels of almost all warnings. This bill would use the current, strict warnings required by the state of California as the nationwide standard.

[ooc: For what it's worth, the legislation HR 4167 (http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/D?c109:4:./temp/~c109zLoyBJ::), is absolutely bogus and a threat to anyone with a food allergy. It's been passed by the House and is now under consideration by the Senate. I'd urge everyone to call their Senator and urge them to vote NO on it, if/when it comes out of committee.]
