Cutthroat Games, Monday, July 8, 2019

Anakin who had not gotten lost in the maze all week NO REALLY HE HADN'T, was at the front of the class playing with tiny board game pieces and giving Aeryn a smirk. He was winning RISK today, dammit.

"Welcome to today's class on a game called RISK," Aeryn told them. "It is a game that is very important to both of us, that Anakin loses."

Anakin was scowling very hard, even though he knew that didn't affect Aeryn in the slightest. "This is a very fun game about taking over the world using dice, and tiny fake armies."

And sulking. Soooo much sulking.

"You will be given Earth countries to start from, and I'm not sure how accurate some of these are at any point in time," Aeryn continued, not even paying attention to the scowling. "On your turn you'll try to invade a surrounding country, or add armies to what you already have."

"If you win the high score, you get the country. The one with the most countries--other than me--at the end of the game win," Anakin said. "It's fun and only slightly violent."

"Unless anyone throws the board," Aeryn said.

"Well, be sure to duck," Anakin said a little waspishly.

"And no cheating," she said, looking directly at him this time.

Anakin had three natural groupings with his cards already, which pleased him. He didn't have China, which did not. Time to fix that. He put most of his armies in Australia and North America, then aimed at Eastern Australia and rolled the dice.

Sorry not sorry, Janet.

And then he came up short, so the sulking had started early, kids.

Hm. Well, since Lana had three that surrounded one more, she put most of her armies in Mongolia, Irkutsk, and Ural, with just enough in the other territories to hopefully hold them, and went gunning for Siberia.

And got it! Now she had a sizable territory all together. This was a good sart.

"Ah-ha!" said Sidon as his Siberia was snatched away, though he supposed if it was to go to anyone, he was glad it was going to a friend! "Well played, Lana! I surely hope you shall take good care of it!"

...yeah, Sidon was not going to be good at this game.

But at least he seemed to be having fun so far?

"I will do my very best," she promised, grinning.

Hmmmm. Well. This should certainly be interesting. Sidon ruminated over the map and the game in general for a moment, trying to get in a good mindset for it. For most of his life, and, really, for most of the history, even during the Calamity, Zora's Domain was a peaceful, practically pacifist country, learning to fight only to defend itself from inevitable enemies. The idea of overtaking a world and invading other kingdoms did not sound like the sort of leadership role he would ever wish to take, especially since that's what Evil Entities like Calamity Ganon did.

Still, it was just a game, so, in the spirit of that, he would try his best.

Most of his armies were going into Afghanistan and Egypt, as it seemed to be quite in the center of it all, which meant the Middle East was clearly the obvious choice to try to overtake first, sandwiched as it was in the middle of them.

So he made the attempt, letting out a slightly relieved but also a little disappointed, "Oh, fish," when he proved unsuccessful.

Janet didn't actually know about the China thing, or she'd have defended it better. Otherwise she thought she had a good spread on the board, and she rolled to try and take Siam.

And that worked out for her.

Also, "I think this game is old."

"It's the only one we could find," Anakin said. "There are others?"

"I'm pretty sure Siam is Thailand now," she said, though she didn't say it confidently, but what was the copyright year on this game?

"And I'm almost 100 percent sure that Yakutsk isn't a thing," Anakin said, pointing to his army, "but I will fight to the fake death for it anyway."

Aeryn was going to spend this game a) trying to take China on principle, b) trying to dominate the world, c) kicking Anakin's ass.

She also wasn't a fan of where she was starting, so she just tried to go straight for China.

And didn't get it. Ugh.

Anakin? Totally pointing and laughing like a goddamn adult.

"You didn't get it, either," Aeryn pointed out.

"Yet," Anakin said optimistically.

Anakin wasn't not still interested in China, but no one was invading North America enough for his taste! So, since he already had Alberta and the Western US, he invaded the Eastern US.

"FINALLY!" he cried as he won and moved his army in entirely too happily.

If you look up "sore winner" in the dictionary, you get a picture of Anakin.

Just for that last round, Aeryn tried to put an army from the Ukraine into North Europe, and got it.

Mmm hm.

"Hey!"

"That's the game, Anakin," Aeryn ~~mocked~~ said patiently. "If you can't handle it..."

"I can handle plenty!" Anakin said, suddenly much more interested in Europe. Expect a counterattack from angry Scandinavia!

"That's just petty," said the pot, calling the kettle black.

"Yes, but I'm going to win," Anakin said. "I'm fine being a petty winner."

Hm. Not knowing anything about past issues, either Afghanistan or China seemed logical to go for next, and since she'd just taken territory from Sidon last time, China it was!

She got it. And smiled.

[Sorry, Anakin, the coin said heads!]

"What is with everyone and China?" Janet had to ask.

"It's strategically important," Anakin sulked, looking at Lana. "And I always get it."

Usually through cheating, but details.

"You're welcome to try, of course," Lana told him.

"I have no idea, honestly," Lana said with a shrug. "It just seemed like my logical next move."

Not that she wasn't a little smug to get something the Jedi wanted.

Who are super not talking to each other. RISK IS SRS BZNS.

It should be noted that Aeryn used to enrage Darth Vader in an attempt to get China, anyway she was here today.

Back in Ye Olden Tymes, we LIVEPLAYED this. In one evening. We were on crack.

RNG didn't decide who won because it's way more fun to play this out :)
