International Cuisine and Grocery Run

Hannibal met the students at Portalocity and nodded at them. "Good afternoon. As this is the first week, we will be doing introductions. As part of the purpose of this class is to leave the island, we will be doing them in the restaurant."

He waved them through the portal and onto a street outside a restaurant. "Welcome to Paris. Le Grand Véfour is a restaurant that has been here for several centuries, and which looks out over the gardens of the Palais Royal. The food is a mixture of traditional and modern French. Please ask any questions you may have; the local language is French, but many of the servers will speak English, and I am fluent in French. Once we have eaten, we will be visiting La Grand Epicerie for shopping. Please let me know if there is anything specific you would like to purchase, and we can find it."

He led them into the restaurant.

"In addition to your name, please let me know any food allergies or aversions you have, and anything you're especially hoping to experience," Hannibal said.

"I'm Prompto," he offered, grinning a bit crookedly because Dr. Lecter would definitely know that by now, and he figured his other classmates would by now, too. "No allergies...and mostly no aversions? I feel like that's something I'll only realize once I encounter something, you know? But, anyway, I'm not really hoping to experience anything in particular, I just sort of like going around to all these different places and seeing what they're like and what the food's like, and I love shopping, even if it's just for food, so..." He had to laugh a little, a bit self-consciously, "I don't know, I'm gonna be pretty easy to please with this one."

Especially if it was involving taking a portal every week, because seriously.

"Welcome back, Prompto," Hannibal said, smiling. "I'm pleased to have you in my class again, and I hope you enjoy both our shopping and our food."

Hm. Now he was wondering how much call there might be for a purely shopping class.

"Gratuity Tucci," Tip said. "Most people call me Tip." And yeah, she was aware that there was a certain . . . appropriateness to her name for this class. "I'll eat pretty much anything that, you know, is consumable by standard human people." She'd gotten used to adding that last part after growing up with Boov running around munching on dental floss and pool chemicals. "As for a wishlist . . . I'm down to try lots of different stuff. But if we could get some African cuisine in? At least one?"

More than that would be amazing, since, you know, it's an entire continent, but she knew better than to expect more than maybe a trip to Ethiopia here. It was only a summer workshop, after all.

"Welcome, Tip." The nickname was amusing, but it would be rude to say so, so Hannibal didn't. "I'm pleased to hear you're adventurous. We have visited Ethiopia and Morocco in the past; are there other countries you might be interested in as well?"

“Well, something sub-Saharan would be cool. Maybe West African, like from Ghana? Or Southern African. Or Malagasy — that’s from Madagascar. There’s . . . kind of a lot of options. It being a big continent and all.”

"Well," Hannibal said, "we have seven weeks and only six continents with restaurants; I'm certain we can manage one or two of those."

"I'm Nell Ingram and I'll try just about anything once," she said.

"Welcome back to my class, Nell," Hannibal said. "It's good to have you here."

"Thank you, Sir," Nell said with a smile. "I'm looking forward to this class."

"Is there any place in particular you'd like to see?" Hannibal asked.

Nell considered. "Japan, maybe? Or... oh, I don't know. I still don't know enough about other places to decide."

"Japan is definitely on our agenda," Hannibal promised. "If you think of anything else, please let me know."

Nell brightened at the news. "Oh that's wonderful, and I'll tell you if I think of anything else."
