Adaptability And You, Monday, 2nd Period

Today's class was being held inside the school. In a classroom. Because, while Kanan would normally like to do the summertime-chat-on-the-lawn thing, he really didn't trust the giggling bushes that Sparkle had mentioned. Or the occasional things-being-knocked-over-for-no-apparent-reason. Or the fact that he could sense you creepy stalker guys thinking you were being sneaky, come right the kriff on.

"So," he said, once it looked like people had come in and gotten themselves settled, "since this is the second summer term, I'm going to go right ahead and assume you've all been here for the first half of... all of this. For those of you who I don't recognize, I am so sorry you showed up for a summer where the Island seems to not be able to make up its mind whether it wants us dead or not. But that's why I'm teaching this class, and waking up on a Monday in order to do it."

He was literally already awake anyway, he did radio broadcasts on Monday mornings. Walked the dog. Did a lap of the island to see what was trying to kill them this week.

"I'm Kanan Jarrus, you can call me 'Professor Jarrus' if a need for formality is absolutely killing you, but I kinda prefer Kanan. I didn't go to school for this or anything. I'm just a guy who happened to make a lifestyle out of adapting and surviving. For the rest of the summer, we're going to work on that, taking this class to assess the situation as it stands on the island and talk about what we might need to make it through. Since the situation outside the door right now seems to be, 'mostly normal, with a side order of creepy giggling bushes,' we're going to take the opportunity to talk about what we can each bring to a general emergency situation before talking about how to handle... giggling bushes... in particular. Maybe speculate about what that is out there and what we might be in for."

It was a nice, straightforward class, he thought. Even if it didn't involve shooting things right away. Sorry, Sabine.

A new round of classes! A new possibility for several more introductions, even though most people already knew him already! And he'd always found himself delightfully challenged in Kanan's classes thus far, so he was eager to discover what there might still be left to learn.

Hopefully with fewer sewers and failed attempts to be convincing at knowing sabacc involved this time, though.

He really did need to learn how to actually play that...

Well, he's not going to ask why you took this class. That part seems kind of obvious.

Yes, Kanan is absolutely taking notes as you guys do your introductions, here. This isn't quite a student reserves class or anything, but it seems like doing so might be prudent, this term.

Sidon had pretty much been bouncing through the brief preamble into the good stuff, because he still hadn't and never quite would grow out of his love for a good, solid introduction.

"Hello!" he said, all that energy channeled brilliantly into a single word, as he loomed over everyone with opening arms. "I am Sidon!" And one of those arms swept into a powerful pump of his fist across his chest, and he smiled his brightest, sharpest smile at the class, managing to (as always) catch the light just so on a particularly sharp point. "The Zora Prince!

"Of course," he continued, chuckling a little, "most of you already knew that. Just as I assume that most of you would already be aware of the fact that I am the fastest swimmer in all of Zora's Domain, and therefor, all of Hyrule, and I daresay, all of Fandom Island as well! And considering we are on an island, that can be incredibly useful in an emercency. My significant height can also be useful, though I have found it can also be quite a detriment, as well, depending on the situation. I am an excellent fighter; my strength can benefit me greatly should I not have any weapons on hand, but if I do, watch out! I am a superb shot with a bow, an adept hand with a sword, and should you be on the other side of an encounter with me when I have my marvelous trident, I do not think this emergency will last long!

"Naturally, though, I should hope my charm and diplomacy may actually be utilized in such situations over more forceful attributes, as I consider myself rather skilled in those traits, as well, and any situations that can be defused with a more civilized approach over the more violent one shall always be the more preferred, in my esteemed opinion, and I should rather hope that is a point that most of us can agree on!"

"Hey, Sidon. Good to see you in my class. And that's a hell of a laundry list of skills to have," Kanan said, grinning faintly. "I'm sure anybody in the room would be happy to have you watching their back in case something goes bump in the night. And the island has already given us a few situations where 'in his element in the water' would come in handy."

He paused to consider.

"Are there any situations where you might need some extra assistance in turn? You don't have to share if you don't want to, I know talking about weak points can be difficult, but it might give people some idea of who to keep an eye out for, depending on where the island goes from here."

He'd ask everyone this one, don't worry.

"I'm Lana Beniko." She nodded to Kanan. "I have the Force, of course, and I'm good at defending myself. Also, last week I stocked up on medkits and kolto and meal kits, so I've got plenty of healing anybody can do and food that won't go off."

"For those in the class who don't know what the Force is," Kanan noted, "Lana's saying she has power. Telekinesis, most notably, though there's a mixed bag of other little talents thrown in for good measure. And kolto..." He paused. Wow, was she ever from a while back. That was baby bacta, right there, before they learned to synthesize the good stuff. "... It's a healing agent. She's saying she can do first-aid in an emergency situation."

He gave Lana a crooked smile.

"For the locals."

She'd mostly took the class because Grumpy Bus Driver was teaching it, though?

Though, like, she supposed the actual subject matter might be useful too.

"I'm, like, Nina!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" she chirped when it was her turn. Nina was also a rather, uh, glittery incarnation of herself today. That did not seem to impact her good mood in any particular way. "I'm, like, good in a fight, with my bookbelt," yes, yes she did beat people and monsters to death with books, it was great, "and I'm also pretty good with magic, both combat and healing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can also summon things from other planes of existence but, like, that takes more time and isn't always feasible in an emergency............"

Nina considered the rest of her skills.

"I'm, like, also really good at finding out information????????????" she settled on. "And on, like, getting around unnoticed????????????????"

Kanan could only imagine the glitter was a big assist in the stealth department. There had to be a story there, what.

"I can vouch for the healing skills," he offered, "so I assume you're pretty adept at the combat magic, too. The summoning thing is interesting. What sort of things?"

Also, were they things the island actually wanted around? Kanan had a concern.

"Sabine." Most people already knew her. "I've spent the summer so far fighting things, or making supply runs of one kind of another. My weaponry depends on what the setting is."

See Kanan get right down to business. He didn't need to ask if Sabine knew what she was doing. She was Mandalorian, that part went without saying.

Delirium was confused. "This is Barnabas," she said, introducing Barnabas, "He is a Good Dog. Dogs are good in emergencies. They tell you what to do and keep you warm and prevent falling off cliffs into clouds."

Well. Hers did.

"I'm. Delirium?" She looked at Barnabas for confirmation. She was, today, wasn't she? He gave a solemn nod. The rest of the question, she didn't understand. She'd listened to the others and shook her head. "I can swim too but do you mean water swim or in the air swim and do you mean as a people-sorta-shaped-shark or as a hundred thousand fishies? I like being fishies best. They can swim anywhere. I could mayyyyyyybe be a people-sorta-shaped-shark? But maybe not so tall? Um. I don't.. I don't fight things? That isn't what I do. I'm not for fighting things? Nobody's ever tried to fight me? Maybe.." She perked up.

"No, Delirium," Barnabas said firmly, "No."

She wilted a little. "Um. I can drive real good? I'm a really good driver. Everyone says so."

Plucking a blade of grass - yes, from the classroom floor, where grass suddenly appeared specifically because she thought it ought to - she fidgeted with it and made it into a reed between her fingers to whistle against for a minute. It sounded like a flute. It should have sounded like a burring little razz noise that most grass-reeds made but Delirium didn't like that noise. "I don't do magic. I've never had to defend myself from anything but mean people. I don't like mean people. I tell them that and they go away. Um. Um. I don't see things like human people see them? I see everything. I can't help it. I'm sorry. I try not to because everything all at once is real pretty but it makes it hard to see any one thing, you know? I don't know." She dropped the blade of grass and it disappeared. "Barnabas?" she asked pleadingly.

Barnabas sighed and gave her a patient sort of look. "The Lady Delirium," he began solemnly, "is the immortal anthropomorphic personification of insanity. She cannot be hurt, she cannot be killed, she cannot be stopped by anything short of her own will to do so. The rules of what you think of as 'reality' do not apply to her unless she wills them to. The question of skills doesn't truly apply." He paused and then added, "If you need something, if you need safety, it is best just to ask her for what you need. If you begin to explain why, you might be there for hours trying. Delirium is, at heart, kind and she tries to be helpful. The adage 'be careful what you ask for' applies, however. She does her best." He was fond of his small, fractured mistress.

Seriously, the danger out there isn't immediately obvious, buuut there are laughing shrubs outside and it's pretty clear that something is following people around. Go on and discuss that, speculate as to what it might be, and come up with strategies to keep as safe as possible through it. Emergency contact lists? Weapons? Whatever you guys can think of. Workshop this one.

"It seems to me," Sidon proposed thoughtfully after a moment to consider, "that this could be a situation that calls for the power of numbers! If the situation turns dangerous, one has someone else there to either witness it, fight it, or perhaps even fetch some assistance if required! And, if the situation turns out to be not dangerous in the slightest, you simply have the excellent company of a very good friend, and who wouldn't simply revel in that happy occasion?"

Del just listened. She.. didn't understand but that's why she was taking this class. To learn what people meant when they said 'emergencies' and stuff.

She glanced at the door and then asked slowly. "You mean.. you don't always hear them laughing? Or the grass talking? Or trees whispering?"

This class was almost named, "Sabine Keeps Asking Me to Teach a Class About Shooting Things," in her honor, but Kanan decided that the current class title was a little more relevant.
