Sex Cultures

Grissom gives a lecture on every ninja-loving pirate's favorite topic, Prostitution.

Discussion Question: Should prostitution always be illegal, should it be legal but heavily regulated, or do you believe it should be allowed to operate as any other business would?

[OOC: Soc. students, please handwave yesterday's classes as happening with a boring lecture and no homework. I apologize for the missing post.]

Bel signed in.

"It should be legal," Bel said. "I mean, if people want to sell their bodies, that's their choice. But I guess it should be regulated a little more than regular businesses to make sure that no one is being forced into something."

But why not?

Phoebe signed in.

"Mostly, it's up to the people who are involved in the business. If this is what they want to do, then why can it not be regulated like a specialty business is? There should be regulations to keep everyone involved protected and safe, and to make sure no one is being forced into anything." Phoebe channeled George Carlin for a moment. "Sex is legal. Selling is legal. Why isn't selling sex legal?"

"Legal," Pip said after signing in. "And as regulated as most businesses are in this country. I mean, it's going to happen whether people want it to or not. Might as well have it legal so people can be sure that it's safe and hygenic, no disease and no pimps beating people and all."

Cally blinks a few times. "Prostitution is illegal here?"

"What she said." Alanna nodded at Cally.

"You're as surprised as me? Sure, the scrolls aren't exactly happy on the subject, but legalization makes it regulatable and stuff, so the people who are involved don't get exploited and stuff," Cally says. "Makes total sense."

Re: Class

[identity profile] threeweapons.livejournal.com 2006-03-31 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
Alanna shrugged. "I'm not sure what the legal stance is aside from 'it's better that the noblemen tumble the common-born girls rather that our daughter's'. Or something like that. I don't think there are any laws about prostitution where I come from really."

Re: Class

[identity profile] sogothcally.livejournal.com 2006-03-31 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh," Cally says. "Well, that sounds delightfully condescending to the poor prostitutes."

Re: Class

[identity profile] threeweapons.livejournal.com 2006-03-31 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
"Most noblemen don't care about commoners." Alanna tried to keep her voice normal and level. "Most. Maybe things will change when those who do give a damn come to power. Or maybe not." She shrugged.

"Good leaders usually make a difference," Cally says. "Like, President Adar? Is kind of not that great. Sometimes I think, like, a schoolteacher would be better running the government."

Re: Class

[identity profile] threeweapons.livejournal.com 2006-03-31 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
Alanna nodded. "Oh totally. The current ruler? King Raoul? Loves peace to the point of it becoming a handicap. His son..." She took a deep breath and tried to describe Jon not as a cheating ex. "Well, he's different. He does try to go out, get to know the people. He and I, and some of our noble friends, have common born friends. He has a more realistic view of people. How does your President Adar screw up?"

Re: Class

[identity profile] sogothcally.livejournal.com 2006-03-31 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
"Well, he runs stuff okay, I guess. But sometimes I think, he's, like, sleeping with other members of government or something. Cause, like, the situation the secretary of Education is in? She should be totally miffed about the crackdowns on strikes and stuff." Cally nods. "Workers unite, and the government tends to crack down. Stupid government."

Re: Class

[identity profile] threeweapons.livejournal.com 2006-03-31 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
Alanna blinked. "What's a strike?"

Re: Class

[identity profile] sogothcally.livejournal.com 2006-03-31 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
Cally shrugs. "It's this thing where the workers refuse to work until steps are made to improve their work situation," she says. "But I think we're kinda getting off topic."

Re: Class

[identity profile] threeweapons.livejournal.com 2006-03-31 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
"Riiight. Prostitution. I actually know quite a few prostitutes. And um, not like that."

Re: Class

[identity profile] sogothcally.livejournal.com 2006-03-31 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
"There's a place for that in town, isn't there?" Cally says. "We could, like, go do field research."

Re: Class

[identity profile] threeweapons.livejournal.com 2006-03-31 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
Alanna shrugged. "I think so? What would we be researching?"

Re: Class

[identity profile] sogothcally.livejournal.com 2006-03-31 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
"Dunno, we could see what they think?" Cally says. "I was just kinda scratching for ideas. Dunno what else to say."

Re: Class

[identity profile] threeweapons.livejournal.com 2006-03-31 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
"That might actually be interesting, getting a different prespective and all that. If we need a final project, I think we're set."

Re: Class

[identity profile] sogothcally.livejournal.com 2006-03-31 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
"Score," Cally says with a nod.

Re: Class

[identity profile] allie-cameron.livejournal.com 2006-03-30 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
"It should be legal, regulated and taxed," Allie said. "Help us get the country out of debt."

Anders is likewise surprised and perplexed at the whole illegal thing.
