Wilderness Adventures, Tuesday

Like before, class was once again outdoors. In the water.

"So, no more dinosaurs means we can safely be in the woods," Tony said. "But now the island is flooded. So, it looks like we'll be changing up the lesson plan to address that instead."

"To swimming," Steve said, nodding as he gestured around the soggy park. "We're not expecting you to be Olympic level, but a few tips on how to stop yourself from drowning if you end up stumbling into an unexpectedly deep body of water definitely falls under wilderness skills."

Unless you're trapped in an airplane that you specifically put down into the North Atlantic, but Steve was working very hard on not thinking about that right now. This week was...not great, if you were Steve.

There were a number of things that just Weren't Great all around.

"We have some tips for you kids," Tony added with a tight smile. "Some if you might already know what you're doing, so you can help us with anyone less familiar with it."

"Unfortunately, since we want you to get used to wilderness conditions, we're ignoring the part about the water not being too cold, too deep, or easy to see to the bottom of," Steve said. "You are with other people, though, which will help. The most important thing to do is not to panic because your brain will definitely want you to panic."

Voices of experience, here, kids.

"And we have pool toys to help!" Tony added. Because those helped, damn it.

"No beating your teachers with the pool noodles," Steve said, stripping off his shirt and stepping into the cold, cold water. "Work first on floating, then on treading water, okay?"

Wayne had known how to swim since about as long as he'd known how to walk, and he was pretty used to lakes and swimming holes, too. So another great, new, exciting, thrilling wilderness adventure for the country boy who pretty much ate wilderness for breakfast.

And sure, it was cold, but did Wayne seem like the type of guy who'd admit to thinking the water was too cold?

He was going to take advantage of using a pool noodle or two to support him for easier floating, though. Wasn't too bad, taking some time to just float a little, his arms resting on the noodles behind him so that he could mostly keep his hands out of the water.

He was definitely the guy who kept his hands out of the water when he was floating, so that they were kept dry so he could still light his smokes.

Forget that he clearly didn't have his smokes or his lighter with him right now.

This was more of a hot-tub habit, but, still, you never knew.

If anyone needed Vette, she'd be over here, clutching to about six pool noodles for dear life and just daring somebody to try to take them away from her.

Look, just because she was dating a Zora and he was teaching her how to swim didn't mean she wanted to spend this next hour doing the 'drowning wisp of a girl attempting to dog paddle her way to not dying' boogie.

"Stick your legs out behind you," Lana advised. "Lay on top of the things."

She was clutching her own pool noodle and mostly just floating with an occasional kick, trying hard not to panic and use the Force. She had this.

Swimming was not something Nell had really had any experience with and she was a little nervous, especially with the water so cold. Still, she was willing to try, though her long skirts might make it awfully difficult.

You know how people tend to assume cats hate water? Well, that might be true for the majority of domestic breeds, but mountain cats were actually quite good swimmers.

So that'd be Cam, paddling about happily as Jules treaded water vigorously in an effort to keep warm, because the teachers were not kidding about that water being cold.

Lana had theoretically learned this, but she hadn't exactly had much chance to swim on Korriban, so she was holding onto a pool noodle and trying to get the hang of it and not just sink.

Steve had the stubborn jut to his chin that said that even though he was not okay, he wasn't going to admit that to anyone.
