Wilderness Adventures, Tuesday

Class was once more outside of the school, out in the woods where the 'skills' being imparted on them could really be used.

"Okay, so today we're going to learn another valuable lesson," Tony said. "Starting a fire. Safely, please."

"Fire is important for cooking food, staying warm when you're stuck in the Alps in February, and apparently for warding off dinosaurs when they show up on this island because that made sense," Steve muttered.

He learned that fire could scare dinosaurs from cartoons and movies, kids. Don't trust that.

"And sometimes you won't have matches or lighter fluid on you," Tony added with a sigh. "Which happens here sometimes. It's a thing. So, we have some methods for you to try."

"Since you all seem mostly well-versed in wilderness lore--" were they hearing "better at this than two guys born and raised in New York?" because that's what Steve meant, "--pick one that you haven't tried before."

A roar came from the woods nearby. "--And we'll be on the lookout for predators."

Vette kind of wrinkled her nose a little. Just shoot some sticks with a blaster, that would start a fire really fast, right?

But she sighed and started looking around for a few dry sticks to rub together anyway.

(Even if really, she was actually hoping to find a dinosaur.)

Nell sat on the ground and quickly got a nice fire going. In addition, while no one was paying attention she reached down to commune with the ground and send a strong suggestion to the ground itself that it should keep the more dangerous animals away. At the very least the earth would tell her if they were getting too close.

She might look as if she was daydreaming while she did this.

Of course Wayne had tried all of the suggested methods before, and to varying success, so he did take maybe a moment to see if he could just glare and squint a fire into existence (listen, you wanna tell him the whole world was plunged into some nonsensical prehistoric world and there were talking dogs and blue aliens here and it was suddenly illogical that maybe he could now make fire with his eyes? It was worth a try, bud). That was clearly not working, though, so he stuck with the good old rubbing sticks and bark togeher method, fanning it out when it started to get some smoke to encourage it to catch on the tinder, and then maybe using that to light up a dart while he was at it.

They were outside, ain't no reason to get excited.

The thing about the druidcraft cantrip, besides it being something Keyleth could cast an unlimited number of times a day, was that it was ridiculously versatile and could do things ranging from making flowers bloom to giving a simple weather forecast to ... oh yeah, lighting a campfire. Because that was what happened when a spell got developed by generations of druids, who tended to spend huge chunks of time alone with just nature.

So yeah, a quick gesture and a few murmured words, and Keyleth had her little campfire going nicely.

Sabine didn't find the actual act of making a fire with a couple of sticks too hard. It was more that she was very on guard anytime she heard one of those sounds, and that was slowing her down. Which kind of defeated the purpose of making a fire with sticks.

Lana gathered her tinder, shrugged, and shot lightning at it until it sparked, then fanned it with the Force until it caught.

Hey, it wasn't any of the methods they'd mentioned, but it worked!

It was hard to ignore those noises when your familiar had decided to bound off on her own after them.

Not too long after Jules managed to start a fire, Camden came slinking back into the clearing, dinosaur blood dripping from her jaws. Someone had had a very successful hunt, yes.
