Wilderness Adventures, Tuesday, May 7 [2nd period]

Not surprisingly for a class with “wilderness” in the name, Steve and Tony had gotten in touch with their students to let them know to meet just outside the Preserve. “Okay, so the wilderness on the island will probably not eat you,” Steve began optimistically.

"Most of the time," Tony added. "We think. You know what? Exercise caution. How about that?"

"Probably a good idea," Steve said. "I'm Steve Rogers, this is Tony Stark, and we're your teachers for this class this summer! We're very excited to teach you all about surviving in the wild."

One of them was wearing pressed khaki pants. They definitely looked like people who could survive in the wild, huh?

Maybe if they could find a box of scraps out there?

"First, how about you all introduce yourself and let us know what experience you have in this," Tony said with a smile.

"And after that, we've set up an easy exercise through the woods to get you familiar with using a compass," Steve added. Apparently they were for more holding a picture of your kinda-sorta girlfriend from the '40s to stare at moodily! Who knew?

Say whaaaat?

"It'll be fun," Tony said, much too optimistic.

"There's a snack waiting for you when you get to the end!" Steve told them.

If they'd remembered to cover it from the bugs. Had they done that?

...They had not. Sorry, kids.

Ready to get lost!

It's the first week, after all! Who are you? How good are you in the woods?

And a set of instructions that have you going north, then west to get to the end of the Preserve and take a picture of the lighthouse, then allll the way east to the old abandoned makeout shack (not that Tony and Steve knew that was what it was, but they could guess...)

From there, make your way to the abandoned campsite where there were two slightly embarrassed teachers, lots of coffee, plastic-wrap covered protein bars, and apples covered in ants that were definitely being thrown away now.

Tell us about your adventures getting there, or pair up with a classmate and get lost together!

"I'm Wayne," said Wayne, with a nod to one of the teachers, then the other, and then the other students as whole, "and I'm..."

...wondering if he should pull off a mutiny and just teach this class himself because he was pretty sure he could do it just as well if not better with his arms tied behind his back....

"...a bit versed in the outdoors, I guess you could sayyyy."

A snack at the end? What kind of Cub Scout Little League Kiddie Grade Pageantry was this nonsense anyway? A compass? Fuck. Just follow the moss on the trees, you degens.

Vette

"I'm Vette," Vette... chirped, really. "And I've got plenty of experience in all kinds of terrain, but not necessarily woods, so much."

She shrugged.

"They don't really have forests on Nar Shaddaa. Unless holo-trees count."

They probably did not.

"Keyleth," she said with a little wave, "of the Air Ashari, and I guess you could say I'm pretty familiar with the outdoors? I did grow up in a tribe of druids in a remote little village up in the mountains, so . . ."

That was tactful, Kiki. Good job.

". . . I mean, I guess I'm pretty good in the woods?"

Lana Beniko

"Nice to meet you, Wayne," Steve said with a nod in reply. "How much is a bit on a scale of say, camped once in first grade to lives without running water now."

"Probably not," Steve agreed with narrative. "So you're better in desert or water?"

“Lana Beniko.” She waved. “My experience in wilderness is mostly desert, though it does include a lot of things wanting to kill me.”

Because Korriban.

Steve smiled. "Hello, Keyleth. Sounds like you're an expert."

"Eating you, or shooting at you?" Steve asked.

He wasn't exactly a wilderness expert, but he had a lot of experience in almost being killed.

She kind of was. And she was Very Concerned for you two.

"You could kind of say that," Keyleth agreed. "Used to them, anyway, so that's something, right?"

"Rocky terrain is my old home turf," Vette replied, shrugging and nodding. "Water's more Sidon's thing, but he's teaching me how to swim, and I'm... probably not likely to drown!"

She sounded so proud, too.

North, Vette could do! West, Vette could do! Heck, she even had enough experience living around here at this point that stopping to read the directions wasn't tripping her up as much as it once might have, and-- she was totally pausing to giggle at that old abandoned shack. Not that she knew what it was, but she totally had an idea or two for it...

Ahem.

"Aw, little guys," she muttered to the ants once she was at the campsite. "I'm gonna have to just evict you from one of those apples..."

Still good.

"That's an important first step," Steve said, sounding a little wry.

"I can almost float without flailing around like a crazy mynock."

And a solemn nod.

Put her into water sometime this summer, Steve. It would be so sad.

There was a smile in that next squint, it was just a little hard to see. But it seemed kind of funny to Wayne that that particular scale was used, considering Dary'd been worried Wayne might not even have running water down here.

After all, how civilized could a place be if they didn't even have All-Dressed chips?

"Ohhh," he said, "I'd say right about sqaure on the center of lived my whole life on a farm up until this weekend, summers out in the woods since before I could even properleh walk, which includes some time out in cabins and hunting blinds where the only running water you got is that crick down there by where you sister swears left and right she saw a couple of bears living, but you know she just made that up because you know bears don't usually migrate that far south, but you let her go on believing it because, well, that's just what you do."

Juillenne Milone (and Camden)

Though this island wasn't hers, it apparently had some magic of its own, judging by the fact that she had somehow been assigned both a 'big sister' and a roommate, of all things. Both of whom had said they were headed to some sort of lesson? On the outdoors? They'd agreed that for lack of a better plan, Jules and Camden might as well tag along.

When the question was asked and it was clear that she, too, was expected to answer, Jules gave the teachers a wide-eyed, startled look. "Juillenne Milone. I'm a naturalist," she said, as if that ought to explain everything. Which, on Fennbirn, it would have. Except this wasn't Fennbirn, she remembered. "I can communicate- sort of- with animals." Hence the mountain cat sitting placidly by her. "And I make plants grow." That was an extremely simplified version, but it'd do for now. "Naturalists are very much at home in the outdoors."

"And," she added. "This is Camden, my familiar." She wasn't going to add any assurances about Cam being 'friendly'. Cam generally didn't bother anyone that didn't bother Jules first, but she was still at heart a wild animal with wild instincts.

"Eating," Lana said. "Mostly."

Theron Shan

Steve grinned. "That's very descriptive, thank you."

"Congratulations," Steve said with an earnest smile.

Steve was pretending Very Hard to be Quite Okay with this chompy cat...thing.

Quite the wilderness expert, he. "Nice to meet you, Juillene. And...um...Camden."

Excuse you, Steve, but Cam was delightful. At least, if you were a friend.

"She only bites if you give her reason to," Jules said, her grin just this side of impish.

Camden, for her part, was casually washing a forepaw as she stared at Steve.

Okay, so. There were instructions, which certainly made it a lot easier than it could have been, but this was also all-new terrain for Jules. So while she and Camden didn't get lost... yeah, it took them a while to get to the final destination.

Jules also had a slight scowl on her face that just dared anyone to make a crack about the fact that she was visibly limping as she arrived.

Theron shrugged. "Theron," he said. "Haven't died yet."

Mostly because he'd made it to the temple before passing out, but details.

"I'll try not to give her a reason to," Steve said.

"Me either," Steve said with a smile. "Lots of time in the woods or no?"

Nell Ingram

"I'm Nell Ingram," she said. "And I'd say, I'm overall pretty comfortable in the woods."

She didn't particularly think these two looked all that versed in woodcraft themselves, but one shouldn't judge a book by it's cover.

Then again, if things went wrong, she was pretty sure she could commune with these woods well enough to keep everyone safe and get 'em where they needed to be. And she knew Lana and Vette could be counted on as well. They'd all keep that nice Mr Rogers and Mr. Stark safe.

Nell was rather wide-eyed at Juillenne. She wondered if this girl's abilities - that she mentioned so casually, without any apparent fear that she might be taken for a witch - might be anything like Nell's own. WHich she pretty much didn't talk about.
