Verity greeted the whole class with a big grin as they entered. "Welcome to your final class," she said. "Next week will be the final - where you're just going to have to successfully dance to about a minute or so of music, don't worry - so today is the last day to teach you a dance. Which means today, you learn the tango."

She immediately put on music, slow and sultry. "The tango is about desire and passion, for life, for love, for sex, even for violence," she explained, easing into a solo routine. "Even if you learn the steps perfectly, you have to figure out what passion you're unlocking during the dance to really make it work. Otherwise, you're just doing a collection of fancy steps."

She stopped dancing, bringing her feet together in preparation for leaning the steps. "The Argentinian tango is complicated, with eight individual steps," she said, starting to demonstrate the follower's steps. Then she moved to showing off the leader's steps, which were the follower's except in reverse. "So, let's practice, a one and a two and a three and four."

Astrid (still feeling a little sore from Other Astrid's very dedicated training sessions over the weekend) was making a point to get good stretching in today before paying close attention to the steps. Nice, clearly defined steps that were, in theory, easy to execute, especially with focus and effort.

Now the passion part, that was a little more difficult to come by...

Before she'll let you dance, though, you have to talk to her about something you're passionate about, something to think about in the dance.

This was likely to be a little awkward for Astrid no matter who she danced with...except for her mother, which actually made this a little easier. It wasn't a far stretch at all to look at Ms. Price and get shades of Ingrid. Blonde. Fierce. Passionate. It bothered her a little, though, that the transference was made even easier due to the fact that her image of her mother in her mind's eye was getting increasingly blurrier; it had been months. Had prison continued to harden her already sharp edges? Had they finally begun to soften her? Letters had been scarce; she ached to hear news about whether or not she'd be staying here for a second summer or if they'd worked something out...

"Well, that's easy," she said, when it came around to talking about something she was passionate about, "that's art."

But, when she said it today, what she really meant was going home.

Verity held out her hands for Astrid to take, waiting for her to decide whether she wanted to start by leading or following. "Art?" she asked. "What kind?"

And that one was easy, too. Astrid would always follow when given a choice. "Mostly sketching," she answered as she took Ms. Price's hands. "But I like watercolors, too. A lot of painting, some sculpting, I really like collage work..."

For someone claiming to be passionate about it, it all came out very reserved and a little bit dull, but it was more self-consciousness and a general discomfort with talking about herself than anything else.

"You sound really talented," Verity said, starting to lead the dance. "That's a lot of different disciplines to work with. So, how does sculpting and painting and sketching make you feel?"

She's spending most of the class dancing. Look, she really loves the tango, okay?
