Ballet for Beginners; First Period [01/18].

Okay. So Rosa might have to begrudgingly admit that there was actually one benefit to being forced into teaching this class this semester: she didn't have to put hardly any effort into actually thinking of interesting class idea, because it was all following a basic progression and somehow, miraculously, none of the students really seemed all that bored or sick of it yet.

...not that she'd care if they were.

"Okay," she said, over this week's selection of symphonic metal, "this week, we're going to move away from the barre and try some basic techniques at the center of the floor. Still a lot of the basic stuff, but it's important to get them down, but there will at least be a few new steps that we'll be developing further next week."

Rosa barely managed to hold back a slight curl of her lip for how gross and professional and teacher-like that sounded. Seriously. What the hell?

"So warm up today's going to include the usual stretches and some of the barre work from last week, then we'll bring it to the center, I'll over the new steps, and we'll hit that center work. You know the drill."

It was seriously the most simple basic stuff in the world. If you didn't know what to expect by now, then there was no hope for you.

Vette was still plenty stretchy, yup. And possibly planning on using today as a means to try to dance some of her jitters out.

As per usual, she was throwing herself right into this.

Breq found this surprisingly relaxing. She needed more exercise probably, and even if dance wouldn't have been her choice, she didn't mind it.

At the very least, the warm up and stretches were getitng a little easier for Sidon, so then he supposed there was some benefit to them and that he could actually learn this style of dance after all. Though he imagined it did have a lot to do with the fact that he'd tried to work some of it into his training for practice, because of course he would be practicing it as Ms. Diaz had suggested they did.

Hey, steps and turns! Once steps and turns were involved, it actually started to feel a little bit more like something that was on its way to dancing. Vette approved.

And stepped.

And turned.

As you do.

After they had practiced the new steps, Breq raised her hand. "Professor Diaz, I would find it helpful to see more examples of how this dance is supposed to look when you've reached some level of proficiency."

"Detective. I would very much appreciate it. I'm not sure this dance exists in my universe."

Breq found she liked the teacher. Being strict and organized combined with being open to listen to suggestions were good qualities.

Would Rosa find it disturbing to know this?

Ah, yes! This was adding things a bit more complicated than pointing and bending, wasn't it? Sidon approached it with a little uncertainty, knowing how the pointing and bending still wasn't quite as natural to him as he would like it to be, but he found the moves...surprisingly forgiving. An exchange of weight between feet and a well-executed turn could even seem like moves useful in fighting...

...but those were thoughts for another time, as he wanted to give the steps his undivided attention. Especially when there were all those extra bends and the barre-less pliés that would demand his focus so he didn't just go staggering out of position for lack of balance.
