Ballet for Beginners; First Period [01/04].

Back again for another week of ballet. With students who actually seemed like they wanted to learn it, too, even if only out of curiosity and skepticism.

...it was weird and Rosa didn't know what to make of it, but she was pretty sure she didn't like it.

But she was still going to do it. There were portable barres of to the side of the classroom today, so there was a pretty good hint at what they'd be working on today, and the rock music playing was definitely a departure from the standard piano pieces from last week, though kept low so Rosa could be heard over the driving bass and guttural, growling lyrics.

Not that Rosa would ever have a problem projecting her voice when she needed to.

"Today we're doing basic barre work," she informed them, because who needed greetings and preambles? "Find a spot on the floor for warm-up, and you'll bring a barre on the floor so it's easier for everyone to see as I teach you. Alright. Let's go."

Breq hadn't minded the music last week, but enjoyed the change, especially since she had talked about it with Rosa last week.

Never underestimate the importance of a good warm-up, right? Vette was still actually enjoying herself as she threw herself into it today.

This body might not have a good voice but was quite suited to finding the right movements and positions for this dance. With the variation of music, Breq thought she might find this class more enjoyable than she had at first expected.

Sidon was, of course, still a bit awkward with the stretching, especially the ones that required sitting that just made him feel nearly every inch of his bulk, but it was a little easier this week, especially as he'd taken the advice to practice as Ms. Diaz suggested, and that was encouraging. He was quite certain it would never feel as natural as swimming for him, but he had a feeling it would get increasingly more natural as the weeks moved on.

It wasn't stabbing, but after two thousand years of making her bodies fight rather than dance, Breq had a tendency to slip into moves more suitable for combat than dance when she lost concentration.

Sidon had been momentarily worried about the height of the barres, but it turned out, it worked surprisingly well with the length of his arms relative to the rest of his body. He would just have to be mindful not to put too much of his weight into them, as they didn't look like they were incredibly stable. But he put those concerns out of his mind as he tried to focus on the instructions instead, grateful that they didn't seem too difficult, just...a very strange way to go about moving, really.

And foot goes forward, and foot goes to the side, and foot goes to the back...

Vette was smiling a little as she went through the warm-up here, committing those to memory. Yeah, this definitely wasn't the sort of dancing they tended to expect Twi'lek dancers to do back home, at least not yet, but it was kind of calming, anyway.

She liked this class. It was weird.

Well.

Sidon had very good posture, he had that going for him.

He was very glad for the mirrors to help him see what his short legs were actually doing; he had to grip the barre a little tightly on his first few attempts at a plié, in which his top-heavy, broad-shouldered self just wanted to pitch forward a little.

He did rather like the way the arm movements made the long, trailing fins at his elbows move, though, and made him think a bit eagerly how graceful they might look when they moved on to more complex steps, and, because of that, he was putting almost as much attention into that as he was the actual foot movements.
