It was possible that the Ethics teachers had been copiously drenched by special snowflakes on the way to class today, but it was also possible they'd planned this final a long time ago and were just secretly evil...

Though that would imply that Aphra was actually hiding being a terrible person.

“Today,” Anakin said, gesturing to the various baking supplies left out all over the classroom, “you will each make a cake to demonstrate your appreciation for everything you've learned from us this semester!”

Which had not included how to bake anything, but details, right? “And then you'll tell us one thing you'll remember most from this class. Your grade will be based on sincerity and inventiveness.”

Sure.

"Also how tasty the cake is."

These kids were doomed.

Anything involving actually having to cook food would always be a little bit of a difficult thing for Sidon, especially anything more involved than just tossing something over a fire, and, snowflakes or no, he was certainly never above asking for help when he needed it.

"I do believe," he ventured cautiously, uncertainly, as he eyed the ingredients dubiously, "I might require some assistance on this particular assignment..."

Now this was something Nell could do in her sleep. She quickly threw together a chocolate cake from scratch - and without a recipe - and prepared a delicious buttercream frosting with just a touch of raspberry as the cake baked. Yes, the frosting was fairly simple, but it was all absolutely delicious.

Yeah, sure, Yang could bake, and enough to feed Ruby, so two teachers wasn't a problem. And if she could do it without Ruby setting the place on fire, Sidon should be fine.

Wait...actually...

"Hey, Sidon, come work with me. I got an idea."

Yang Xiao Long, no, you are NOT looking up creme brulee recipes on your scroll. This is a TERRIBLE idea.

An idea was more than what Sidon had at the moment, so he was more than happy to have whatever help might be afforded to him. He met Yang's offer with a broad grin. "Excellent!" he declared, pumping a fist with eagerness for a solution to this particular conundrum. "Do tell; what have you got in mind?"

"So, there's this type of cake that's totally supposed to be on fire," Yang said bluntly, perusing the results of her search. "It's delicious."

"So, I figured we could make it together, because teamwork, and it's a symbol of how sometimes things being on fire isn't a bad thing, and actually makes it better in the long run, because no one wants to eat an unbaked cake."

Also, things being on fire was a GREAT allusion to this entire class.

Yang was certainly not wrong about the allegory with this particular cake, but, really, she had Sidon at teamwork.

"Those are all some marvelously wonderful points, Yang," Sidon said with a chuckle, appreciating her thoroughness. "And you've certainly gotten a hold of my intrigue! Let's do it! Let's make this delicious fire-cake! What do you need me to do?"

"Here we go, this one doesn't look too hard, and there's a filling so that would be a surprise, and this class was all about surprises," Yang laughed, setting her scroll on a table so the recipe would project in the air near their heads. "Help me find all this stuff, and we'll get rolling?"

"...also, when I light it on fire I need you on standby in case someone tries to get too close to me, or put me out, or something like that."

Sidon nodded. "Fantastic!" he said, leaning in to take a closer look at the projected recipe to decipher what exactly it was that he might need. "Of course I'll be on stand-by! Whatever you need, Yang, in case someone tries to get too close to you or..."

And that was the exact moment his brain caught up with all of that, yes, and he paused, tilted his head, and then turned to Yang questioningly.

"I beg your pardon, but did you say I'm to be on standby in case someone puts you out?"

If he was to be standby, it would be rather important for him to make sure he understood what she meant there, because he'd admit he wasn't sure if he did.

Yang just grinned, a smile that was more than slightly feral, and her eyes flashed from violet to scarlet and back again.

"Well, yeah, can't have them putting a damper on my flare," she joked, flipping her hair over her shoulder, and for a moment the ends might have looked like they were made of light. "This is gonna be waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more fine-control than usual, so I'm gonna need a spotter so no one gets in the way."

Roasting marshmallows was one thing. She'd never done anything like this, Yang usually focused on the input-output-PUNCHput of her gift, not the side-effects like the affinity for fire and light, and she had to keep from setting everything else on fire. Maybe finger-guns would work like a brulee torch...

That was the sort of response that only managed to whet Sidon's curiosity more, so he supposed he'd better get to gathering the ingredients. Which was easy enough, really, far easier, he figured, than the actual baking would be, because his eyes might have crossed just a little as he perused the instructions and tried to put it into context.

There were times, like with Vette and her hot sauce, that Sidon wished he had a more sophisticated palate and digestive system, but looking over what all went into making some of this stuff, there were also times where he was glad his food was much, much more simple.

"....whisk?" he ventured with uncertainty.

...he was not kidding when he said he needed assistance, Yang.
