"Next week will be our final," Hannibal told them all when they arrived. "This week, therefore, we're making something more in keeping with the season. Buche de Noël." He brought out his own, which was a picture-perfect sight of tree trunk with mushrooms sprouting up around and through it, spots of moss and decay, and crumbed and airbrushed dirt below it. He carefully sliced off a portion for each of them. "This is a traditional dessert for the upcoming holiday. Enjoy mine, then make your own. You may look up ideas for decorations online, or create your own design. As usual, I will be around to answer any questions you may have."

Life's short - eat dessert first!

That log was a cake.

That LOG was a CAKE.

"Earth is so weird."

This wasn't stopping Vette from eating hers, though. She'd been smart and saved room on the way here in spite of being pelted with free marzipan.

Fortunately, marzipan would keep.

"You don't have foods like this back home?" Hannibal asked.

"I mean..." Vette shrugged. "We don't usually eat sticks, but whatever'll keep you going, I suppose."

Yes, she knew it was cake. She was still utterly baffled by the 'log complete with moss' bit.

Hannibal chuckled. "Well, I do hope this tastes better than most sticks."

Okay, now, this was just cool, and maybe got Prompto thinking about what other cakes could be made to look like other things, but then he shook his head and told himself to focus on the cake at hand, because he knew if he wanted to make it good enough for the pictures he totally wanted to take of it, he would have to make sure to concentrate and pay attention to what he was doing.

See Vette. See Vette throw herself into this with a gusto, breezing through the actual recipe bit of this like it was nothing.

See Vette get stuck halfway through decorating while trying to figure out if there was some way of making her log cake glow. If that was because of the season or because of some desire to create a homage to the luminescent forests of Ryloth, she would never say.

"Trying to determine how best to add spice?" Hannibal asked, smirking.

Vette paused, and blinked, and then broke into a little laugh that, no, she wasn't explaining. It was short anyway, and she shook her head a little, still smiling.

"No, I'm just not used to trees like this, but the ones I am used to have properties that... maybe you probably don't want to have in your food."

"Such as?" Hannibal asked curiously.

"... Bioluminescence?"

"Ah." Hannibal thought about it. "Not many edible plants on the surface of Earth are bioluminescent. However..."

He did a few searches on his tablet. "Here you are. Why not try something like this?"

Vette leaned forward thoughtfully to look at what he'd found.

And then she practically lit up, herself.

"That'll do nicely! Is there a blacklight? I want to see if I can make that work!"

"For here, I can program one," Hannibal said. "For outside, they're fairly easy to acquire; I imagine Summer would have one at the Turtle and Canary. Or can get one in. If not - have you been introduced to the efficiency of online shopping yet?"

Vette looked thoughtful for a moment, and then shook her head, no.

"I mean, I know it's something that can be done. But I'm still working on the part where I don't have any way to make a payment online."

What was a Paypal anyway?

To his credit, Prompto's little grunts and winces and "Whoops"es didn't come in until the time where it came to sculpt and decorate the thing. And then, really, after a little bit, he just gave up on trying to make it realistic and just gave his log a smiley face.

What? It was totally cute, with those mushrooms for eyes.

"Going for surreal?" Hannibal asked, eyeing the face.

Prompto lifted a finger, looked like he was about to say something, and then seemed to shift gears, and swept that finger in the air.

"Yes," he said, with the confidence of a person who'd just made a split decision. "That's exactly it."

Hannibal chuckled. "Well done." He leaned in as if to share a secret. "Never let on. And never fear; all sorts of buches are traditional these days."
