Pay It Forward: Making a Big Difference in Little Ways, Friday, Period 3
"We've been doing a lot of charity work lately," Hera said, "but this class is about helping in all kinds of ways, big and small, and that's not the only way there is to help. Today we'll be doing something smaller."
"Spreading nice thoughts," Kanan said, leaning back against the desk, arms crossed over his chest. "Good feelings. Slip a friendly note in a book in the library where somebody might find it. Put words of encouragement on a public 'fresher mirror with a sticky note. Smile at someone who needs a smile. Say 'hello' to someone who looks like they could use a friendly greeting."
"Never underestimate what just being nice can do," Hera continued. "You could really make someone's day. You could turn them around, and they could turn someone else around. Compliment something about a person. If you've got credits, pay for their coffee. Offer to help carry something. Heck, if you're the artistic type," she knew who she was looking at, "just paint 'YOU ARE GREAT AND PEOPLE LIKE YOU' in large letters on...something someone doesn't mind painted. Or paint it on paper and wrap that around a wall."
Kanan was giving Hera an amused glance. Oh no, she was encouraging that? He was going to have to show her his office door at some point.
Hera had already been warned she was creating - or at least encouraging - a monster, here. She was unrepentant.
"So," Kanan said, looking back at the class, "you're welcome to stick around here for the rest of the class period to brainstorm, or set out into the wild now to get a head start on today's assignment, but what we'd like for you to do is find some way to improve somebody's day. Call it homework. Make a week out of it."
"If you have any really great ideas, please share them, too," Hera said. "Working together is another way to make things better."

Listen to the Lecture!
It's a pretty straightforward concept, admittedly.
Re: Listen to the Lecture!
Re: Listen to the Lecture!
....and considering how much Sidon usually talked, that was just about nearly everyone.
Oh, he had no concerns about this particular assignment, not in the slightest! Though he supposed it wouldn't hurt if he maybe did a little more...
Go Forth!
Re: Go Forth!
Not that it should matter, or really did matter.
Re: Go Forth!
"Ah, Breq!" He grinned at her in greeting, nodding his head slightly. "Allow me, if I may, to make the task at hand a bit easier for you, as I assure you, it will improve my day significantly if you were to but spare a small amount of time for me to bend your ear on something I've been thinking about this week. It would be wonderful to obtain your thoughts on the matter and see if you might perhaps like to be involved again."
He grinned at the again in particular, thinking it a nice little hint to drop into the conversation to see if she could guess what he might be angling at before he said it.
Re: Go Forth!
Breq smiled. "Again?"
It was hard not to pick up on that.
Re: Go Forth!
His expression then went a little sly, leaning in slightly as he added, with a wink at the end, "I'll also note that I may have something in mind for the excursion that might interest you in particular."
Re: Go Forth!
She was happy and she was curious, perhaps not with the intensity that Sidon might hope, but that was more a question of personality.
Re: Go Forth!
And considering that he didn't dare assume or take for granted that any of his friends would like to come with him, it worked well that any positive response was a delightful treat, really.
"How magnificent!" he said, opening his arms in his gesture of appreciation. "It's shaping up to be a marvelous trip thus far!" And he'd only really asked three people at this point. He clearly would have been over the moon if it had only been one, at that. "So, tell me, Breq, would you like your curiosity sated with more details, or are you one to hold out for a surprise?"
Re: Go Forth!
Either way worked for her, but she guessed Sidon wouldn't mind giving her a hint.
Re: Go Forth!
Because of course he wanted to give her one, he rather liked the idea of it because it could make it all a rather fun game, but there was the problem that subtly was hardly a quality that Sidon possessed, so it was quite the feat for him to come up with something suitable that wouldn't, in his mind, give most of it away.
He was terrible at hints, but he felt maybe, perhaps, he'd come up with something suitable, chuckling a little as he moved that hand on his chin to a slightly shaking finger.
"Ahhhh, I think I've got it!" he said. "I know for a fact that, where we will be visiting this time around, you in particular will be taking something back with you that I know you'll enjoy quite considerably!"
Re: Go Forth!
That was the only thing she could think of, and even if it didn't show on her face, it did make her curious.
Talk to the Teachers!

Re: Talk to the Teachers!
So with his brain positively bursting with new ideas, after speaking with Breq and maybe seeking out any squirrels hanging around the classroom to have a word or two with them, Sidon headed over to Hera, his grin maybe a little sheepish but not at all reluctant as he offered a slight bow in greeting.
"Miss Syndulla," he started, "you must forgive me for my frequent pestering of your attention after class, especially lately, but I'm afraid I must seek your assistance in something once more. You have been beyond helpful so far, that I almost feel as though I may be churlishly taking advantage of your kindness, but I cannot help myself in seeking your excellent guidance in another pursuit, though I assure you, it does relate very much into the assignment given for this very class."
Re: Talk to the Teachers!
She reached into the bag she'd brought with her and pulled out a small holoprojector. "It's scavenged, but it should still work fine. It's loaded with holobooks and vids on Ryl. I hope it'll help."
Re: Talk to the Teachers! - (NFB from here, please!)
Here Sidon had been caught up in thinking of surprises for other people, that he would have never expected on coming his way, even if they had discussed it previously. It was a delightful surprise, though, and he laughed, knowing exactly how the rest of his evening was likely to be spent now.
"Well, that's spectacular! Thank you, Miss Syndulla, I'm certain it shall be an incredibly helpful tool in my journey to learn the language. No doubt, with your generous assistance, I'll be speaking the language in no time!"
...as soon as he figured out exactly how it worked, anyway, but he supposed he could ask after that before they were finished, as well. For now, though, after a glance toward the squirrels and a faint nod to let them know that this is what he'd spoken to them about, he smiled at Hera. "And, actually, it's a wonderful lead-in to what I was going to ask you about today. If I am not mistaken, from my research I gathered that Ryl is...a verbal language, yes? Well, verbal accompanied by gestures performed by lekku." His own headtail gave an envious little swish at that, which was really the most it could do. "There is no...written equivalent, is there?"
