Pay It Forward: Making a Big Difference in Little Ways | Friday, Period 3

"Today is a day in many versions of this country," Hera began, "where there are a lot of sales on goods. It is also," she cautioned, "a day where a lot of people get pretty crazy about shopping, so be careful as we're going around. We'll be working on two things today - one, we'll be getting as many toys as we can for kids who might not get any otherwise. Two, we'll be trying to defuse any arguments or problems we encounter and not being jerks."

"I'm terrible at this one," Kanan supplied. "Someone's probably going to kiss the floor before this period is through."

At least if Kanan made it happen, they probably really had it coming, right?

... Right?

"You've each got a fifty dollar gift card," he added. "Earth's got a big gift-giving holiday coming up in just over a month, and today's the best day of the year, so I'm told, to make good use of it. There are charities to donate toys to for those kids who wouldn't otherwise get a gift on that holiday. Try to avoid anything that might require additional parts in order to use - just because there's a sale on the big gaming system doesn't mean these children will ever be able to use one without a television or the games. Board games, though? Those should be fine. Bicycles, sports sets, dolls... Your challenge today is going to be to think about what toy a child in a difficult situation will be able to make the best use of... while not getting trampled by the crowd."

He grimaced a little.

"If crowds make you uneasy, feel free to put that money to use in the less busy parts of the store, buying wrapping paper, or maybe canned goods to donate to a food bank instead."

If anyone really wanted to go ahead and pick a fight with the giant shark person picking out gifts and trying to make that gift card stretch out as much as possible, then they were more than welcome to.

Although, really, if he had something anyone else was angling to get, all they had to do was ask, and it was theirs.

This whole thing was terribly confusing and chaotic, though, and he just wanted to do the best job he could, but he wound up just making it easier for himself and getting things stocked up on the top shelves.

Once the daze from the foray into that particular retail adventure had been shaken off a little toward the end of the class, Sidon went to find Hera. He'd been a bit nervous about it before class, really, and he couldn't help but feeling like the escapade had done little to help ease any of his apprehensions much, but he wasn't going to let that deter him.

"Miss Syndulla?" he ducked his head slightly. "Might I be able to request a moment of your time?"

"Excellent!" Sidon flashed her his toothy grin, giving his fists a small pump, familiar excitement, really, that also happened to help with nerves. "Well, then, there are two things I wish to discuss, and the first, I suspect, will be rather easy, especially as you've mentioned just the thing I was going to ask about in class today. Would the charities we're donating today also be interested in some very lightly used items for babies? I have so many things leftover from my Ethics assignment that I was very much hoping I could then tur around and offer to families in need, now that my temporary child has no use for them. So I would very much like to get those off my hands and into the hands of someone far more deserving."

And that, for all the words it took for him to say it, was the easy part. This next one, however...

"And, secondly, quite unrelated, but I was wondering if you might have some good resources that may assist a person with an interest in learning Ryl."

And, boy, was Sidon sure glad that Zora couldn't blush right about then, yes.

And here would be a moment when Sidon wished he could be clever enough to think of a good answer to that question, but all he managed was the simple truth of it. And it wasn't like it was a big secret or anything, either, so he just laughed and shrugged his shoulders.

"It's for Vette," he admitted. "I figured it would be a nice surprise for her, if I learned. So anything at all that you have would surely be helpful; perhaps there might be something in the library as well, but I haven't had the chance to check quite yet."

"I would imagine," said Sidon, with a thoughtful tilt of her head, "that both would be incredibly beneficial in various, different ways. So I suppose, if it isn't too much trouble, it would be wonderful to have access to both books and recordings, should they be available."

Look, Kanan was having a day and he'd drop a sleemo flat if he had to.
