Civics, Friday, November 16, 2017

There were two tiny boys and a distinctly unamused looking Paris Geller at the front of the classroom today. "Hey there," Paris said dryly. "Fandom's being weird again."

The slightly sturdier, dark haired boy shrugged at that assessment. One guess at who that one was. "The house said we had to go to school. This... wasn't what I thought it'd be."

"Yeah, we're both a little disappointed," Paris muttered, looking at the smaller kid who looked like a good stiff breeze would give him consumption or some other old timey disease. "We're talking about the federal holiday of Thanksgiving, and these two wanted to cook for you, but I got here early and managed to save us all from having them burn the school down."

"I know how to make toast," Steve said indignantly. "And popcorn."

Truly a meal for the ages, folks.

"I know how in theory," Tony offered much quieter. Things would possibly catch fire.

"What's 'in theory?' mean?" Steve asked.

"Means I haven't done it yet." Or that it might catch fire, but that wasn't important and Tony would definitely apologize a lot for it.

"So I will be supervising the snack making," Paris said loudly, "while they explain to you what Thanksgiving is all about." From tiny children. So this should be super accurate.

"Its a holiday celebrating the arrival of the pilgrims to the New World," Tony said almost by rote. "Where they almost died, but the people who already lived here gave them food so they wouldn't."

"And so they had a big feast with alllll the things to eat," Steve said, eyes wide because it was the Depression when he was from and all the things to eat hadn't happened for him in a while. "And made sure to say please and thank you."

It was possible Ma Rogers had tacked that part on herself.

Tony nodded in complete agreement with that being a rule. Up there with only speaking when spoken to. "Next time we can ask the cooks to make more food."

The cooks. Yes. Sorry, Paris.

"Cooks?!" both Paris and Steve echoed.

"Um. How about we watch this movie the robot on the house suggested?" Tony said, hiding behind technology from everyone in the room.

"Is that a colored cartoon?!" Steve gawked, sitting down immediately.

"I made an omelet today," Astrid offered, super quietly, because if those boys were going to talk about what they could make, she wanted to point out that she could make things, too.

Even if she had no idea what she was doing here or even how she knew to come in the first place, but she was there, anyway, so...it was okay.

"Regular eggs are good, too," Astrid said, with a nod as she tried to sound encouraging. "As long as you don't burn them, it's hard to mess up eggs. Except I guess if you don't cook them enough...then you can get sick."

Astrid's faint smile was empathetic. They'd all been there, Steve, it was okay.

"It helps," she offered, feeling very sage and wise about the whole thing, too, "if you just let it soak in the sink for a little bit, too, but then you sometimes have to scoop egg gunk out of the sink."

And sometimes your mom got mad at you about it, even if the whole reason you did it was because it wasn't like she was cooking anything...

"Moms get disappointed a lot," said Astrid, sighing a little and looking away and wishing she hadn't mentioned the pan-soaking trick. She was trying not to think about that too much. This was how it always happened, she'd be gone for a little while, but she did always come back. It was okay...

She wanted to say something else, then, talk about something else, but she couldn't think of what to say now, and just felt awkward about it. She wasn't used to spending a lot of time with other kids, really.

"....popcorn," Astrid decided after a moment of actually considering the hug, but she didn't really get hugs. Popcorn made more sense.

Astrid grinned a little at that, lifting her eyes over toward Miss Geller and considering this bit of information. "She's not that scary," she decided, though she also spoke in a bit of a whisper.

But, then again, Astrid hadn't been under her supervision when she made her food.

"But smaller means you can hide better," Astrid pointed out. "And I can glare pretty good, too. Want me to glare back at her for you?"

She would admit, Miss Geller did have a pretty good glare, but Astrid felt she could give her a run for her money.

Well, he'd asked for it, didn't he?

So Astrid narrowed her eyes, furrowing her brow and pursing her lips into a disapproving frown, and hit him with it as hard as she could.

Paris was watching the movie and muttering to herself about people who just invite themselves over places even if no one told them to come.

Astrid never passed up free food when it was around, even if it was charred, because she never really knew when she'd get food next. And she never got to watch cartoons, so she was feeling incredibly excited and glad that she'd come here even though she didn't know how she knew she should be here, and she hoped that her mother didn't show up to drag her away because watching cartoons would turn her brains into mush.

She was pretty sure her brains were going to be fine, though, if it was just one cartoon.
