"Today is Halloween," Hannibal explained. "For those of you not from this world, it is a holiday that involves a lot of supposedly spooky things and sweet foods. So, today we will be making one of those foods."

He brought out his own red wine caramel apples. "Caramel is deceptively difficult, and will involve taking careful note of the temperature at which you're cooking, but overall these should be fairly easy, and then you can go and enjoy any plans you may have."

He spread his hands and waved them toward their stations. "Good luck."

Yummy caramel apples!

Deceptively difficult and careful weren't words that Prompto was too keen on having to hear, no. But the trying of the food beforehand always did sort of soothe over those wounds for him pretty well, he had to admit.

Make your food and let Hannibal judge it!

Yes, you probably could put cayenne in it. That doesn't mean you should.

Wasn't going to stop Vette, nah. There was definitely cayenne going into at least a few of these.

It was pretty!

Hannibal knew you by now, Vette; he was keeping a close eye on it.

"Try not to overpower the wine," he said from over her shoulder.

"I know, I know," Vette said, glancing up over her shoulder at him. "I have a whole second batch set aside for human mouths, don't worry. Though I was wondering if you had anything in bitter instead of spicy? Maybe not for this recipe, but it would be nice to mix it up a bit sometime. I'm actually starting to miss spiced mynock."

Hannibal thought about it. "Have you tried ginger yet? Bitter, and a cool spicy rather than a hot one."

"I... have no idea what that is," Vette admitted. "Would that go with this stuff, do you think?"

"It goes well with sweets, perhaps less well with red wine," Hannibal said. "But you won't know until you try it."

He went to the cupboard and found a length of ginger root. "You peel it," he demonstrated, "and then grate or slice it." He sliced off a thin piece and offered it to her.

And without hesitation, Vette popped that right into her mouth and chewed.

"Can I just... get a bunch of this to snack on?"

She needed to introduce Hera to this stuff.

Hannibal laughed and offered her the stick. "The skin is too tough to eat, at least for humans, and if you cut it, it will generate its own skin wherever it's subjected to air, so you'll want to keep it unsliced until you're ready to eat it. It isn't generally eaten as a snack in this form on Earth, but it can be found candied or pickled, and you might enjoy those versions as well."

"I might," Vette agreed easily, taking the stick and grinning at it. "You, uh, you might have noticed, but I can eat pretty much anything. I'm going to have to play around with this, I think."

She was mostly just delighted to have a new food to experiment with that wasn't just cayenne. She didn't want spicy food to get boring.

Hannibal nodded. "Let me know what you discover; I'm curious to see what differences you may find. What is spiced mynock like?"

"Spicy and bitter," Vette reported, grinning. "It's usually the bitterness that drives most sentients away from it, though. Some non-Twi'leks claim to like it, which is always kind of amazing. I've heard it's generally an acquired taste."

"Do you know of a recipe?" Hannibal asked. "I'm always interested in trying new things."

Vette shrugged and kind of made a so-so hand in reply.

"I have a few ideas about what goes into it," she replied, "but no recipes, really. If I could get home, I'd at least look one up for you. But mostly, there's... mynock. And spices."

Helpful, Vette.

Hannibal thought about it. "I shall have to see if I can find a recipe. Around here, virtually anything is possible, after all."

"Well.... good luck, then," Vette replied. "You'll want a recipe and your mynock, but if anyone can do it..."

"I'm certain I can find one, around here." He would have to ask Eliot about the mynock. Or maybe Summer.

"If I can, I'll be sure to share it, so you can tell me how close I am."

"Hey, I'll try anything once," Vette replied, grinning. "If you can, I'll be curious enough to see."

"So will I," Hannibal confessed. As to the rest of that... "I'll probably have another cooking class next term. If you're interested in different foods, you should try it."

Not only was caramel deceptively difficult, but it smelled just great when you kept messing it up and burning it, too!

Which wasn't at all what Prompto was doing...

...okay, maybe it was.

"Aw, man," he murmured as he looked into a pot that he was pretty sure shouldn't look or smell like that. "Come on..."

Hannibal wrinkled his nose and made his way over to Prompto's station. "Burnt sugar is an ingredient in some recipes, but not this one."

"I'm trying, I'm trying!" Prompto promised, somewhat desperately. And he was, he almost always did, but, hey, some days were just better than others. It was honestly surprising he'd been as successful as he had so far, but apparently, he'd finally met his match with caramel.

"Maybe third time's a charm...?"

"Take it slowly," Hannibal advised. "Turn the heat down a bit, stir evenly as you work."

He's in costume today - as a homicidal maniac.

Even if his insanity plea was totally bogus (and he left his world before it happened anyway).
