Pay It Forward: Making a Big Difference in Little Ways, Friday, Period 3

"It's getting late in the year," Hera said, "but that means two things for local gardens and farms - one, between harvest season for the last few crops of the year and getting ready for the winter, there's a lot to do; and two, that nobody will care what we look like, because it's that time of year." Yay Halloween?

"Growing their own food is one way for people to provide for themselves and to feel productive. It's jobs and food in one." Hera smiled a little sadly. "For some people, it may be all they have. For others, it's a way of giving back. For some it's both."

"And to that end, some communities have set aside plots of land where people can volunteer their time to plant and tend to gardens intended to provide food for those who might otherwise have difficulty getting enough fresh food," Kanan said, arms crossed over his chest, smiling just slightly. "Hopefully you didn't dress in anything you mind getting dirty, because this week, we're going to be doing some gardening. We've got two tasks to take care of today; if you want to get down in the dirt, there are some late-season vegetables left to harvest. Squash and such. If you'd rather not go digging, there are plants that need to be wrapped in preparation for the winter."

"Pay attention to the gardeners and do what they ask," Hera said. "I don't know about the rest of you, but I have no idea how to grow Earth food, so let's assume they know better than we do."

Breq had never done much gardening - in wasn't something you used ancillaries for - but she had seen plenty of different gardens, in different climates, and was happy to help harvesting what was left, while getting an idea about how they worked here.

This was something Sabine had never done, or never imagined she'd do. And it was maybe not her thing, but not everything had to be, so she could plug away at it for a class period.

As a creature of the water, Sidon couldn't help finding this week's activity, with its focus so intrinsically tied to the land, rather novel and exciting, and, of course, the added benefit of being helpful toward something important was the best part of all for him. He definitely didn't mind getting his hands dirty, so he preferred to help with the gardening itself, though he wanted to spare a little time with the preparation for the winter as well, just to have the experience, just to be extra helpful, and to learn as much as he could should he ever be afforded the opportunity to do something similar to help others again.

Lana...had no idea what to do with this. Food was important to everyone, and she approved of being self-sufficient, so she really had no problem in helping (even if them coming in to help sort of ruined the self-sufficiency), but...gardening? Not something she'd ever done before.

Pulling up weeds and cutting back plants was oddly satisfying, though.

This was totally something Yang knew how to do. While they didn't have a farm, living outside of town and semi off-the-grid meant the Rose-Xiao Long household had an extensive garden. It had been Summer's, really, so Tai didn't really touch it anymore, but Yang and Ruby had kept it up.

Though now Yang was wondering how Ruby was doing, if she could manage the upkeep alone, and what was Tai going to do in two years when Ruby graduated from Signal and wasn't around to take care of it? Would he actually go back to the garden, or was it all going to go wild?

That was... not something she wanted to think about. At all. The idea of Summer's garden being abandoned hurt.

So Yang was going to focus on digging out potatoes and being as loud and cheerful and helpful as possible to other people. Best way to keep people from knowing you're hurting -- or to fool yourself -- was always to get bigger and shine harder.

Hera was also here, and helping out with whatever she could, trying not to sigh too much every time someone complimented her on her costume.
