Student Council, Lunchtime, Friday

It was officially October, so the usual spread of pizza and salads for the council students was accented with all things pumpkin - cookies, muffins, and a questionable jug of pumpkin juice. (It seemed vaguely healthy?)

"Parents Weekend went well, and I think everyone survived having their friends and relatives here, which is really all I hope for each year," Zoe said once everyone was settled. "Thank you all for making everything go smoothly. After our break next week, we'll have Homecoming, which is an opportunity for alumni to come back and visit the school and make sure the gremlins haven't accidentally taken over. We'll have a carnival on Friday, and on Saturday we'll have our first dance. Usually, we try to have a theme for the dance, but it's mostly an excuse to throw glitter on things and dress up. Does anyone have a suggestion for what we could do this year?"

IT'S HALLOWEEN MONTH ALL MONTH LONG ALL HAIL THE PUMPKIN KING!

Sidon was feeling rather relieved to discover that the pizza was not, in fact, also pumplin-flavored.

Though he did sort of wonder now how that might work.

Lana was resigned to the pumpkin, though this at least wasn't as sweet as that latte had been.

Sabine had an aversion to pumpkin spice ever since the fish, so ate eas sticking to the pizza. And being very glad there was t any pumpkin in that.

Astrid did think it was a little weird that the prevalence of pumpkin in everything this time of year was so strong in this century, but she understood it, kind of. And, hey, she liked pumpkin, so she definitely didn't mind, helping herself to a muffin and a salad over the pizza and definitely giving the pumpkin juice a wide berth because, come on. Just because you can juice something didn't mean you should.

Hey, Norman was willing to chance it with one of those muffins. It seemed... healthy? Maybe?

Pumpkin was allowed in baked goods. He drew the line at most other things, but baked goods were fine.

Paris was wearing Uggs and drinking a pumpkin spice latte. She was leaning into the rich white girl stereotype.

Because pumpkin spice lattes were freaking delicious, okay.

She grabbed a slice of pizza and then a pumpkin cookie.

Tip was piling on the pumpkin-flavored things. Well, not the juice. Some things really did go too far.

Maybe something that doesn't use glitter? What an idea!

"Are the gremlins likely to accidentally take over?" Lana asked.

"Oh, they'd definitely do it on purpose," Paris said. "In an unholy co-op with the radio squirrels."

"Is that something we should be keeping an eye out for?" Lana wondered.

"Probably," Paris said. "They're sneaky."

"If we were to make any plans to deal with them, it would have to be on the mainland," Lana pointed out, thinking.

"You don't think," Astrid, surprising even herself a little by actually contributing, but she figured, if she had a hand in making something be less annoying, she should use it, "something Halloween-related is a little too on-the-nose for October, do you? And I don't mean cheesy kids-in-costumes-getting-candy Halloween, but something...more sophisticated. Or something else to give it a unique twist."

"Halloween's the upcoming holiday, right?" Lana asked. "What sorts of things would it involve?"

"Pretty simple color scheme," Astrid offered. "Black and orange are what you see most, but we can mix it up a little with some different shades, some grey, maybe a really nice dark red. And spooky things, like ghosts and skeletons and cemeteries, with a little harvest tossed in, scarecrows, pumpkins," she gestured to the snacks to prove her point, "and old, ancient stuff, haunted houses, cobwebs..."

It sounded ridiculous, but she figured any holiday would if you tried to break it down for someone who'd never heard of it before.

"It's sort of the result of an amalgamation of a few different celebrations: part harvest festival, part celebration of the dead, part superstitious warding off of evil."

So...you know...perfect for a high school dance.

And Astrid was still years from her goth phase, too. But they always started somewhere.

"Most of that sounds like daily life on Korriban," Lana said wryly. Not the harvest part.

"So, a death-and-harvest oriented dance?"

"That...sounds rather....macabre, though, doesn't it?" Sidon ventured into the conversation with uncertainty in his voice. But, then again, he had been thinking about death a little too much this last week, so perhaps he was just feeling mildly sensitive to it as a topic. "Is this...a typically common theme for this sort of celebration?"

Not that he wished to doubt Astrid's opinion, of course, but it did seem rather strange to him,

"We could probably steer it away from death," Norman interjected, because so help him everything in his life was somehow tied into death, "and just make it a generic sort of Halloween thing. Black cats and pumpkins. That sort of stuff is fun?"

He was also not listing off witches, no.

Look, Norman had a history with this time of year.

"Is there something cheerier we can combine it with?" Sabine asked. Black cats and pumpkins weren't really doing much for her personally on their own.

"K'lor'slugs?" Lana suggested, smirking. Okay, no, she wasn't serious.

"What about gizka? They're adorable, cheerful, and come in a variety of colors, as well as being terrifying."

"What the heck's a gizka?" Paris asked.

"They're these...reptilian creatures," Lana tried to explain, holding her hands apart to show the size. "Mostly about the size of a cat or an Earth dog. They come in a lot of colours, and they hop around on two feet. They really are adorable. Unfortunately, they're also a pest - they reproduce rapidly and can get everywhere in a ship, so they're a bit of a terror."

"They sound a little terrifying," Norman replied, blinking. "Maybe we want to stick with something that more people will recognize, though? Leaping lizards sound kind of specific."

... And cute. He couldn't deny they sounded cute.

"There's always fish!" Sidon offered out with a laugh. "Though I'll admit that suggestion comes from an incredibly biased place."

"I think there's plenty we can do with fish and Halloween," Sabine said, thoughtfully.

Of course her idea of "fish" as suggested by a shark-man was different than Earth's fish, where she'd really only been exposed to one Big Mouth Billy Bass, so who knew what that would end up being.

"As long as we're not carving fish and putting candles into them, I'm good," Paris said.
