"Today we have a recipe to cook that will involve quite a bit of work," Hannibal said. "It is fairly forgiving, but you will have to pay attention. Also we have, through the magic of this shop, managed to make ovens that will halve the baking time, otherwise we could never finish during class. So, be aware of that."

He brought out his own version of the food. "Huntsman pies. They use several kinds of pork, as well as chicken. Meat pies are common to many different cuisines; these are closest to something my husband would recognize. You are free to adjust the spices in some of these," he was looking at you, Vette, "but you must make at least some of them as the recipe specifies. For the rest, you will find some suggestions of variations in the second document on your tablets, or you may search for others."

He waved them toward their stations.

Think about how universal meat pies are.

Huh. Vette hadn't had a good meat pie since her time serving on Nok's crew. She was almost afraid to have one now, absolutely certain that anything she could make with Earth ingredients would be just different enough to seem wrong.

... But she was curious, too. Maybe it would be just different enough to seem like something else entirely, and that wouldn't be so bad.

Cook your pies! Show them to Hannibal!

Okay, fine, Vette would behave herself and actually follow the recipe, this time around, if only because she couldn't just pop gravy with raw meat into her mouth in order to taste-test it. But also because... hey, maybe she would find herself pleasantly surprised, here. There was no mynock or gizka in it, nah. Not a single tidbit of nerf meat to be found. But maybe she could enjoy this one just for being what it was?

She was game to find out.

"Planning on making one of the other variations as well?" Hannibal asked, watching her work.

"I'm not sure," Vette admitted. "It's harder to pick when you have no idea what they're talking about. It's like reading an entire page that says things like, 'And a hearty snargle has been folded away in a delicate gleeblebloop crust, with extra bingbong for flavor,' you know?"

A beat.

"Man, I hope that was actually gibberish here."

Hannibal chuckled. "I should tell you that Bingbong is a very respected spice. But yes, that was actually gibberish." He nodded at the spice cabinet. "You can open and smell or taste the spices here, though. And ask if you have questions."

Vette reached a hand up to rub at the back of her neck, thoughtfully.

"Have I got time to do both? Figure out what I want to make, and then get both pies done?"

"If you hurry, perhaps," Hannibal said. "But if you are willing to stay longer, I will keep the room open for as long as you need it."

Vette considered that for a few seconds.

"Is there one you'd suggest I try?"

Hannibal thought for a moment, then called up a recipe to show her. "Jamaican versions often have hot peppers in them. Scotch bonnet is one of the hottest still used in human cuisine. And there are enough other flavors it won't be one-note."

Vette leaned forward, peering at the recipe, looking thoughtful, and then nodding.

"Okay. That'll do. I'll stay late for that."

Hannibal grinned. "And you'll have them all to yourself. I'll taste the standard recipe for your grade."

"Great, thanks," Vette replied, grinning faintly, and then looking back at the recipe thoughtfully. "I guess we'll see how it goes."
