Pay It Forward: Making a Big Difference in Little Ways | Friday, Period 3

"We're going to try something a little different today." Which Hera had decidedly mixed feelings about.

"And it isn't mandatory by any means," Kanan said, sporting his very own set of mixed feelings on the matter. "But we found a few holographic devices in a storage closet..."

Hera held one up, and with a dubious look on her face, pressed a button. The hologram came into play, and now she looked like herself...only human. "These will make it easier for us to interact with people over the causeway that aren't used to other species. Again, they are definitely not mandatory, though. Anyone who doesn't want to use them, we'll figure it out."

She'd admit she was curious about interacting with mainland people, but it still felt a little wrong. She turned the device off again. "The point of today isn't to draw attention, though; it's to help out at what is locally called a 'soup kitchen'."

Kanan had absolutely been staring at Hera with the holo on, yes. Mostly in bemusement.

"That is so weird," he supplied. "But... yeah. Today we're heading to a soup kitchen in town to serve food to people who otherwise have none. Our job will more or less be to stand there with a ladle and give people food as they walk by. It's not difficult work, at least not in a physical sense, but if you need to take a break for any reason, feel free to tap myself or Hera in and we'll cover for you."

Hera nodded. "Other than that, please be polite and follow the instructions of the people that run the place. If you have any problems with that, again, come and get one of us." She looked around. "Our portal should be here any second. Any questions before we leave?"

Sidon was absolutely going to be dishing out the tuna casserole if he could help it. It just seemed to fit the best, and he was proud to say that it only took him a little bit of effort to figure out just how to compensate the balance between his perceived proportions with the holographic image and his actual proportions.

There might have been one or two missed scoops before he really got the hang of it, though, but he took it all in stride with good humor and a rather fetching blush, now that it appeared he actually could.

He liked this, though. The circumstances of the situation made him quite sad, but he was so pleased that he could do even this small thing to help them, and, naturally, he hoped his charming banter and his easy smile would only add to the comfort the patrons would find at the soup kitchen today.

And seeing her altered as he was added another level of strangeness to the whole thing as well, but Sidon still smiled back and chuckled. "I appreciate the encouragement, Miss Syndulla," he said. "It's rather strange, but I must admit it almost adds a novel level of fun to the whole thing. Like playing a part in a play of some sorts."

One definite disadvantage to this holographic technology was that it was really bringing to light how much Sidon actually blushed and never showed before, but at least he wasn't entirely aware of that as he smiled back.

"This was a truly wonderful idea," he said. "I'm glad to have had the opportunity to participate in such a generous endeavor more than worthy of our time."

"Oh, no," said Sidon, shaking his head slightly before it turned into a nod and a smile a dished out another scoop of the casserole onto a plate for someone. "Nothing like this. There's really no need. For while Hyrule may be war-torn and ravished by the Calamity, she had always been abundant in resources, with a strong sense of community. We look out for each other, as best we can. We truly must; there are really not many of us left..."

But he did so hate to leave anything on such a disheartening note, so he quickly added, "But we have made many great strides since the Calamity. It's truly amazing how well we've gotten back to our feet."

She probably wouldn't admit it, but Sabine hasn't really been into the idea of this at first, and she didn't even know why.

And then she got down here, and she actually liked it. There was something kind of nice about helping people and being able to see that it was helping.

Breq didn't need a holo device, and dishing out food was something she had done for centuries.

Just not to people who couldn't afford to buy food. She appreciated doing it, and was humming quietly, which most of the visitors put up with. Eventually someone in the staff told her to shut up, but even that didn't affect her good mood much.

Breq made sure to smile. The support was unexpected, and she didn't care about being criticized. Even if many of her officers had liked her singing, many had constantly made rude comments over the years, and that was when she had had good voices.

She got back to work, and to humming.
