Lexical Dysfluency and other communicative impediments

She lectures for a short time on the role of LD, i.e. people who rely on repetative meanignless sounds in speech. For example, um, uh, y'know, n'stuff.

"What purpose to these things hold in speaking? What do they indicate tot he receiver/ And most importantly, are they a habit? A tick? An annoying trait? Or do they say more than you'd imagine? Let's go gang."

"Depends on the situation, I think. Sometimes it's just a habit, right? And you don't even realize you're doing it. But sometimes it's about nervousness or something, you get flustered or whatever and you end up saying um and uh a lot. Whatever it is, it usually looks to the receiver like you don't know what's going on or you're nervousness. It doesn't look good when you have a lot of random sounds in your speech."
