Civics, 1st Period - Friday

Today, there was a television screen in addition to the two teachers at the front of the classroom. "After last week's rant discussion, we thought it might be helpful to talk a little more about separations of powers and how it's supposed to work," Steve began.

"Now, originally the powers were just the Executive and the Legislature, with the Judiciary acting as a bit of an afterthought," Tony said. "The Executive being the President and those who work for him, the Legislature being the House of Representatives and Senate, and the Judiciary being the courts, in case you didn't know."

"And for more than a century, it was the Legislature who held the power," Steve said. "All of those Presidents in the middle of American History that you can't remember? It's because the House and Senate were running things and they didn't really do anything. It's only in recent times with the expansion of the federal government into so many aspects of life that, for better or worse, the Executive Branch has taken on such prominence. It's a lot easier to get one voice moving in a certain direction than 535, especially when half of that 535 deeply loathes the other half."

"Technically the Legislature still has the power to keep the President in check. Not that anyone would know that these past two years," Tony muttered under his breath. "Our government is very different from what it once started as because the country itself is different. Change is important, but also needs to be checked by the people."

"Which is why next week's class will be about registering people to vote," Steve said, nodding firmly. "Today, we're going to watch a few informative videos that explore the separation of powers more fully, and then we can discuss it further."

Astrid's disappointment that the TV wasn't playing Captain America PSAs was palpable; how could they tease her like that? Her only consolation was that she was actually familiar with these ones. She was pretty sure she'd seen them before at one of her old school, or at least ones almost exactly like them, so that wasn't so bad.

"So other than voting, is there anything we can do to make Congress do their jobs?" Paris asked. "Maybe kicking them in the shins?"

It was possible that one of the pockets on Steve's uniform had voter registration forms, even.

Maybe.

Cough.

"Captain Rogers?" At the end of class, Astrid approached in a typically reserved way, a photo-sized envelop in her hands, which she offered out to him. "A few weeks ago, a few of us took a trip to the capitol and I had a friend take some pictures. I just got the prints, and I thought you might like to see them."

A simple enough thing, really, a student wanting to share with her patriotic teacher an educational experience for something he was passionate about. But, of course, they weren't just pictures of a field trip to the capitol and all its landmarks.

They were pictures of a field trip to the capitol and all its landmarks with the Captain America puppet as the focus of each and every shot.

She would have shown him the YouTube slideshow she put together with Tip, with 'Party in the USA' as the background music, but, well, her cell phone was supposed to be for emergencies only and she didn't have a laptop.

Truly, a shame.

Steve flipped through the photos, laughing. "This is swell, Astrid. Thank you. I'm honored to have played chaperone on your trip."

Tony would probably put the pictures up on the fridge.

The whole thing had all started as kind of a run-away joke, really, so Astrid was...profoundly surprised by the strange swelling of pride she felt in her chest. The feeling wasn't anything familiar to her, definitely nothing she was used to, but she actually kind of liked it, and her smile was far more unbidden than uncertain this time.

"You're welcome," she said. It felt weird, but she was going to just accept it and enjoy it. "It was my first time to D.C. We ended up having a lot of fun."

"Well, if you go back for any protests or something, we'll give you extra credit," Steve said, smiling earnestly. "And the museums are all free. They have some amazing art museums--I sometimes stop in before my runs when I'm in town."

"Truth be told," Astrid admitted a little sheepishly, but not too much, her grin lingering all the same, "once I was done with the pictures, I pretty much spent the rest of the time in the National Gallery. Next time, maybe I'll be able to pry myself away for more."

"The Asian Art Museum is pretty incredible," Steve said. "Smaller and easier to get through in one day."
