US History (Monday, March 27, 7th period)
"Okay," Josh said, putting his hands together. "The Civil War was bad. Brother against brother, war pretty much without mercy. Names you should know: Lee, Grant, Lincoln, Davis, McClellan, Meade, Burnside, Longstreet, Sherman, John Brown, John Wilkes Booth. Battles you should care about: Antietam, Gettysburg, First and Second Manassas, the Wilderness, the Merrimac and the Monitor. Documents you should read: Emancipation Proclamation, Gettysburg Address. Reason you should know them: Quiz next Monday."
He smiled. "For today, a question for you all. The end of the Civil War and the 13th Amendment banned slavery in this country. But are you really free if you don't have an education and can't get a job?" He looked around the classroom. "Yes. Reconstruction. Andrew Johnson, radical Republicans, mistakes we made in trying to bring two parts of a very divided country back together. What should we have done differently? How much do you think Lincoln being alive for the post-war years would've mattered?"

Class discussion
Re: Class discussion
"I think if Lincoln had lived there wouldn't have been such a desire to punish the South after the war. Sanctions would probably have been more moderate and Lincoln could have helped make sure that the things set in place were more reasonable. We might have been able to avoid a lot of the backlash that resulted in the carpetbaggers and maybe even some of the conditions that started up the KKK. It still wouldn't have been pretty, but I don't think it would have gotten as ugly as it did."
