Bad Ass Bitch Survival Guide; Tuesday, Second Period [09/4].

Students coming to class that morning would find a sign posted on the classroom door:

Last one there is the punching bag.

And when they got to the gym, they'd find Rosa there with a practice dummy and mats covering the floor. She checked her watch and when it was time for class to start, she launched right into.

"Okay, so, today, we're doing hand-to-hand combat and defense," she informed them. "Hope you're wearing clothes you can move in, but, hey, look. If not, I dug up these super cool and stylish gym uniforms you can put on if you need to. They might even be clean.

"Any Bad Ass Bitch should be able to defend herself against anything, and weapons are great, but you're not always going to have them or they might not always be the best choice for a situation. There are three things that you can usually have on you at all times that'll make a hand-to-hand situation swing further in your favor, and that's a knife," to which she pulled a switchblade out from behind her, let it flash open, then twirled it back in a smooth, steady movement, and when her hand came back around she displayed the next item, "brass knuckles," hand into her pocket and she pulled out a small container, "Mace. They're small, easy to get to, and can help out a lot in a difficult situation, especially knives. Good knives can go just about anywhere; five bucks to whoever manages to guess exactly how many knives I've got on me just now.

"Raise your hand if you're already familiar with hand-to-hand combat."

She was...not at all surprised by the response there, and she had to grin a bit faintly. "Good. Those of you who aren't, pay attention, you're going to get the most out of this. Those of you who are, same thing. Never hurts to brush up on your basics.

"Hands are just as much weapons as knives or axes or guns, only not as much fun or as cool because nearly everyone has them. To attack, best places to hit on the body are..." And as she lifted them, she delivered a deft and precisely blow to each spot on the dummy, and, if it looked a little like a dance when she did it, well...rest assured, her ballet training was clearly going to good use now. "Eyes, nose, groin, knees, solar plexus, knees, fingers, and...my personal favorite...throat!"

"Let's say you can't get that first attack in, though, they've got the upper hand. First, protect anything they can use against you, and that's usually things they can grab onto. Long hair, baggy clothes, hoop earrings, whatever those things on Blue's head are,"--sorry, Vette--, "can all be used against you, so don't even let them close. And then go in for a defensive move to subdue the attacker, and that's what we're learning today.

"Okay, Braids," she gestured to Uma, who'd been the last person to walk through the gym door ~~according to the RNG~~, "you're up. You think I was joking about the punching bag thing? Don't worry, it'll just be a demonstration, I'm a trained professional, you'll be fine, just go along with it, okay? I'm going to teach you all a few simple moves for getting out of some of the most basic attacks. Punching Bag here's going to come at me, and I'll demonstrate. Alright, first one, grab for my arm..."

In addition to the arm grab, she had Uma also exhibit a grab from behind, a choke hold, and a hair grab, explaining what she was doing as she went through the motions, with some bonus body throws. Hey, she didn't drag those mats out here for nothing.

And if she might have finished some of those with a little twist and kneel like she was about to handcuff Uma, well...that was just habit.

"Good job," she told her when they were finished, gesturing for her to rejoin her classmates. "What I want you guys to do now is pair up and practice with each other. Those of you with experience, try to help those without. If any of you feel more comfortable having me going over it in a little more detail first, come see me, otherwise I'll be walking around and correcting all your terrible forms. Please be careful, take your time, be aware, and try not to actually injure anyone. I'm sure Dr. Yang is bored as balls down at the clinic, but I sure as hell don't want to fill out that paperwork. Any questions before we begin?"

Hey, this is important; pay attention. Or else Rosa'll make you her guinea pig for next time.

Honestly, it's your hot cop teacher lady showing you how to pull off some sweet moves. If you have trouble paying attention to that, you're hopeless anyway.

Vette just threw her hands up into the air at 'Blue.'

See? What had she just been telling Sabine yesterday?

... But the educational stuff was great. Not that she didn't already know most of it from her time with Nok and his pirates.

Find a partner and practice some of the moves shown by Rosa, or teach your classmate other moves you might know. Or flag down Rosa and have her walk you through some of this because some of your classmates are just as if not scarier than your instructor.

"Anyone touches my lekku and they're going through a wall," Vette announced.

She was not exaggerating.

"Are those the, um?" Ringo gestured at her own head, tracing her pigtails. That was her best guess, at least.

"Yeah," Vette confirmed, crossing her arms over her chest. "That's what they are. This?" She wrapped one lek around her shoulder, draping it in front of herself like a scarf, "is a lek."

Lekku were prehensile, so said draping just so happened to happen all on its own.

"And if anyone touches either one of them, I'll introduce my foot to their face."

Just as soon as she could stop reeling. Lekku were sensitive.

Ringo's smile only faltered a tiny bit at that. "I'll keep that in mind."

She chewed on her lip. "So, um, want to give this a try?"

Vette considered the other girl carefully for a few moments, and then lifted her chin a little in a half-nod.

"Sure," she replied. "But no hair grabs."

For obvious reasons.

"Deal!" Ringo didn't like having her own hair grabbed anyway.

She stretched her arms up and down for a moment. "Have you done this kind of thing before?" she asked as she finished loosening up and fell into a thing that could charitably called 'a stance'.

"In a manner of speaking," Vette replied, slipping into something a little more carefully honed. A little more immediately recognizable as dangerous. "I can handle myself. Do you need to work on yours?"

"Honestly? Probably." Ringo shrugged. "It's not like I don't know how to fight and stuff, but I'm not used to doing it with just my hands and feet, you know?"

She hopped lightly up and down on her toes. Then grinned and took a sudden gliding step forward. The movement was smooth enough that she almost didn't look like she had moved for a moment or two.

Well, that was interesting. Vette tilted her head a little.

"How... how do you fight?"

Because really, consider her intrigued.

"I grew up using AirTrek," Ringo answered. She rolled her eyes. "Some people call them inline skates, but they're powered, so there's a lot of stuff you can do with them you can't do with just shoes."

"What about you?" Ringo asked, just before she surged forward again, then spun around backward to hook her heel at Vette's ankle.

"Me?" Vette jumped backwards, out of the range of that incoming foot, and then... kind of just brought her heel down, fast, at Ringo's ankle. "I fight slippery."

She was small, quick, and flexible. Her best defense was just not being there if she was about to get hit.

Ringo retracted her foot almost instantly, turning the movement into a long step backward before beginning to slowly circle counter clockwise around Vette.

"Slippery's good," she grinned in approval. Ringo's own style wasn't too dissimilar. Flexibility and the ability to change directions before anyone realized what was going on, plus some sneak tricks with centrifugal force, was pretty much the core of the Thorn Road style.

Vette's own style was a little more, 'trained by a legendary pirate, good at sneaking into tight spaces to steal shiny things.'

It was... unique.

"Slippery's how I aim to be in most situations," she replied, arms up, knees slightly bent, ready to move again in an instant. "Anything you can slip away from..."

"I'm Ringo, by the way," Ringo offered, continuing to circle, slowly moving closer. She was carefully watching the distance between them as it shrank. Waiting for the perfect opportunity.

"I'm Vette," Vette replied. "Call me 'Blue' and we'll have issues too."

Seriously. Naming people by their skin tone? Rude.

"Oh. You're the one she was talking to earlier?" Ringo asked, rolling her eyes. "Don't worry, I can remember names."

Suddenly she was taking another one of those weird gliding steps, then a second one, and then Ringo was close enough to reach out in an attempt to grab at Vette's right arm. Time to see if she could manage one of those shoulder throw things.

"Well, that's a relief," Vette replied, letting Ringo grab her arm, simply to put into use the move Rosa had just showed them, pulling her hand up and out of her grip again and using that momentum to skip right back out of her range, straightening up once she was there with a casual grin.

Shoulder throws were for fending off attackers. What Ringo was doing was hardly that.

"I've been called Blue enough since coming here, even I'm starting to wonder if that's my name."

Well, throws weren't really Ringo's thing, so she'd just figured it was worth a try. She even pouted slightly that it hadn't even come close to working.

But then she grinned. "Well, it could be if you wanted it to be?" she suggested. "But I like Vette. It's a cool name."

She bounced up and down on her toes again, but while she started circling again, this time she was going to wait to see if Vette would take the initiative.

"It should be," Vette decided. "It's my name."

She'd picked it out herself and everything.

She kept her guard up again, carefully watching Ringo circle. It would be her turn to attack next, wouldn't it? She considered that point for a few moments, and then, rather than moving to strike directly at Ringo, she ducked a little lower and started circling back.

Ringo stopped moving, simply turning to stay facing Vette.

"Hey, sometimes you get stuck with a stupid name," she pointed out. "Or a name that someone thinks is really clever, but totally isn't."

"Like Blue?"

Vette was so not enamored with that nickname. At all.

"Wasn't the one I was thinking of," Ringo snickered, "but that one definitely counts."

Right. So, lightning was probably not in the spirit of things, was it?

"Do we get our own knives?" Lana wondered.

Yes. No lightning, please and thank you. Hand-to-hand.

"Do you have your own knives?" Rosa asked.

"Not with me," Lana answered. "I've mostly trained with longer blades."

"Then, no, you don't get your own knives," said Rosa. "I'm not going to just give you knives."

Who did she look like, Summer Smith?

"Besides, it's hand-to-hand combat. We're focusing on what to do without weapons." Weapons were later! She had to stretch out topics for this class as much as she could. "Did you also completely miss the part about not wanting to make trips to the clinic?"

"I can heal," Lana said. Honestly, if she didn't get out of the way of a knife in time, she deserved the reminder, didn't she? Earth instructors were so strange!

"But hand to hand it is."

"Hey! I need someone that can hit back, or I'm gonna break 'em!" Yang yelled cheerfully, starting a basic warm-up stretch. "Who wants to play?"

All said and done, teaching was dumb, sure, but watching teenagers try to throw each other to the ground was at least marginally amusing.
