Miguel looked out over the class and wondered yet again how he hadn't managed to get out of this thing. He managed not to growl, and sighed instead.. “Okay, so this is science class. Popular science. By which I mean we apparently get to go through pop culture for science experiments and try to replicate them. Most everything I've seen has been utter crap, but you never know. Hopefully you’ll all at least get a better idea of what is and isn’t possible with the current state of physics.”

He wasn’t promising anything if it was a weird week.

“First of all, apparently we’re doing introductions. So, name, where you’re from, and what sort of science you’re used to. Also the best possible scientific prank you could think to play on a person."

Because he wasn't above using them for his revenge, no.

"Hey, I'm Norman from Blithe Hollow, Massachusetts," Norman gave a little wave, "and I guess my science experience is... mostly normal Earth high school stuff? So I guess... there's one thing where you can supercool water so that it stays a liquid until you pour it...?"

He'd only seen it on the internet, but it looked pretty cool. Not that he had the means to do it himself handy.

Miguel thought about it, then shrugged. "Eh. Not unless we can do that with her coffee. What's normal Earth high school stuff, anyway?"

He'd never gone to one, and certainly not in this century.

"Um," Norman replied, and then frowned and tilted his head. "Calculating the velocity of falling objects, figuring out the basic chemical make-up of simple molecules, naming all the parts of a cell...?"

“Peebee,” she drawled in a slightly sarcastic monotone, “from another sector of this galaxy a hundred-something years from now, so basically everything’s adorably old-fashioned here and I’m kind of reverse-engineering everything in my head? It’s fascinating, really. Same general principles in my time and all except for the part where giant sentient kind of evil space cuttlefish are actually cultivating our science and technology until we’re all advanced enough for them to steal it all and wipe us out, but we’ve figured out how to temporarily alter the mass of physical objects, so we’ve also got a lot of tech based around that.”

"Neat." Miguel gave her a thumbs-up. "I'm from about a century in the future, too, but different tech. We can bang our heads on the desk about it together. No good pranks, though?"

Peebee sighed and put on a very good show of being disappointed. "Not even mediocre ones?"

"No, I mean you don't have any?" Miguel asked. "I was looking for suggestions," he reminded her.

"I'm Astrid, and," she was very glad the teacher was focusing on the popular and science and not the mad part of the subject that showed up on her schedule, "I'm not really...into science? I mean, I've had classes at my old school, but just sort of general stuff. And I don't really know a good prank."

She...wasn't exactly a prankster, and the only thing that really came to her mind was how to use DMSO to make it easier for poison derived from oleander to absorb into the skin enough to kill a man, and that was...absolutely, definitely not a prank, and a good way to show your classmates that you were a psychopath, even if you weren't the one who did it.

"I don't know, I guess that thing where you put a sleeping person's hand in warm water."

That was kind of science-y, right?

"Yeah," said Astrid, shrugging a little. "I've never tried it, but it's supposed to make the person pee."

Ah, middle school urban legend sleepover pranks, as told by a girl who'd never been to a middle school sleepover.

She honestly couldn't remember if she'd heard that word before?

She was actually reasonably good at math and physics, in the sense that she was good at using them practically, as she went about her life. Same with, uh, human biology.

But science? As a thing? Nah.
