Practical Ethics, Tuesday, August 28th

The class would arrive to a tall man in dark robes standing at the front of the room. "This is Practical Ethics," he began. "I am Master Anakin Skywalker, and this is my colleague--Doctor Chelli Aphra." He sighed. "Because someone in the front office thinks they're hilarious."

That was one dead moose. Hypothetically.

If Aphra shared Anakin's desire for moosicide, she certainly gave no indication of it, giving an aggressively cheerful wave. "Or because they realised high ideals are great and all, but they're more likely to get you killed than not."

"They are not," Anakin protested. "Unreasonably high ideals, maybe, like 'I will never ever lie.' But that's just asking for trouble."

"I did not survive working for Darth Vader because of ideals," Aphra pointed out airily, with all the confidence of someone who'd spent over a year refusing to put certain dots together.

Anakin did not choke, but only because he'd been vaguely ready for that. "For those not from our galaxy, Darth Vader is not someone to work for," he said. "Ever. Regardless of your stance on ethics. He is, was, or will be--depending on your timeline--evil."

Still absolutely refusing to join any dots that would lead to any Sith Lords deciding it was worth their time to hunt her down, Aphra continued "Yeah, well, that being evil thing means you're not going to enjoy the moral high ground of turning down a job offer from him for very long." Plus the parts where he wasn't trying to murder her had been cool.

"Fair point," Anakin conceded. "Very well, that will be your assignment today. How would you try to turn down a job offer from someone who's definitely evil and can also read your mind?"

That last part is the tricky one.

Someday, Sabine was going to shoot at/kinda sorta get shot by the very person they were debating/a version of one of her actual teachers and it was going to shake her up a lot.

But for now, she was watching them and, having had both teachers before, she was a half-amused, half-horrified to think how this semester would work.

And Sidon had been rather intrigued and interested in the lecture/debate, but the longer it went on and started to gear toward its eventual conclusion, a terrible realization fell over him.

They weren't doing introductions.

Even if introductions were his favorite, he would have probably a half-dozen of them by the end of the week, and he literally had been introduced to everyone in the class already, some of them multiple time already.

Still, he couldn't help feeling just a tiny bit put out by that...

"I believe I lean towards no, personally, on this matter," Sidon postulated as he rubbed his chin thoughtfully, "though I feel that the scenario is woefully light on important details." And introductions. "Is it just a regular, normal sort of every day job? Will my efforts be used for more evil? Is anything or anyone I care about being threatened if I refuse? I would have to be able to weigh which action will likely avoid the most dire of consequences, and go for that one..."

"If I had time to plan ahead I'd probably try to get a ghost to hijack me," Manfred said. "Two minds have to be harder to read than one, right? Otherwise I would try to talk my way out of it without actually lying. Tell them what they want to hear, you know?"

Master Zho had taught him a trick or two to help keep Force users, Sith or Jedi, out of his mind, but he didn't need to mention that.

"Seriously? People can read your mind?" Nell shook her head. "Well, I guess I don't rightly know. Given what happened last time I was sorta in that situation - well, he didn't have to read my mind, I just told him straight up that I was having no such thing. And added in a few choice words about his low-down self. And then I ran and hid."

She looked up. "Guess I'd just end up dead."

"What if they become very insistent about using only you?" Anakin asked.

"We wanted to let you fill in your own details," Anakin said. "How would your personal ethics make this work or not for you? If he was extremely evil, just in general, but wanted you to move his office furniture around, would that be okay?"

And he'd been teaching for 11 years, so go Manfred.

"Can you elaborate further, please?"

"Or at least probably shot at," Anakin agreed. "How are you at dodging?"

"I'm a psychic and medium," Manfred explained. "That means I can talk to spirits and ghosts. When one tries to take over my body, that's hijacking, because it's--stealing a vehicle that doesn't belong to it...although, wait, there are some physical tells when I'm being hijacked so that wouldn't work so well if the bad guys knew to look for it. Damn. But I was thinking, you know, if you could get a cooperative ghost it would be confusing."

A smile started on Nell's face. "My father and my husband taught me all about hunting - and dodging if you might happen to be getting shot at. I reckon I'm fairly decent, but if he's that evil and any good at it, m'still probably gonna get myself killed. I'm not always so good at keeping my mouth shut even when I know I should."

It was still so strange talking to a man who was not dismissive of her. And so wonderful.

Nell smiled a little. "Yessir. It can be a real detriment at times."

She sighed, but she really was giving this some logical thought, considering what she'd been doing most recently, and why she'd ended up in that situation in the first place.

"Nah. Not worth it. No, and then shooting."

Theron shrugged. "Sith are pretty contemptuous of us ordinary folk, this one might be too busy giving a speech to notice the blaster."

Look, not that he was aware of it, but Theron had been conceived after one parent had let off a concussion grenade in a Sith's face at close range and the other had followed it up by dropping a mountain on the Sith, he came by it honestly.
