Karla was absolutely devastated that the first day of classes was devoted to introductions and that she wouldn't be cooking. She'd been planning to get to the school early and whip something up for the class to nibble on while they did introductions, but Cook had kept her late with questions about an upcoming banquet and then Warren had needed her help choosing a suit and then Nyles had pestered her about a trip he wanted to take with her friends and by the time her family was done with her, she was barely making it to class on time to begin with.

Weird that.

Cook, at least, had handed her a basket of nutcakes to hand out, so at least no one had to starve during her class.

"Hello, students," she said as the class filed in. "Welcome to Cooking 101. This being our first week, we're doing introductions as per Fandom custom. Those of you who are new to the island, yes, you will do this every day this week and for every semester you're here. I'm Karla, graduate of FH Class of 2013, and we were doing introductions then, too."

She grinned at them. "So, today, I'm going to ask you the basics: names, grades, favorite foods, anything specific you're looking to learn in class. I've been cooking for years now - got started in the dorms in fact - so I'm pretty sure that we'll be able to handle anything you're looking to learn."

That was very optimistic of you Karla. As was the idea that you could cook in the first place.

"And, in the last half-hour of class, you're gonna make your favorite fast, go-to meal. Whatever you make when you need to eat, but you don't have much time. Eggs, cereal, a sandwich, whatever! But at the end of the class, I want you to have prepared something you can show to the class." She held up her basket. "Feel free to have a nutcake while you make your introductions!"

See, naysayers! One class down and no disasters! She was so good at this!

Yeah, that was definitely going to be a brows-to-the-hairline moment when Karla found that out. And then Warren would get pestered to kiss the other Bobby, because Karla was terrible.

"Sorry, darling," she said with a wry smile. "It's Fandom. For awhile, folks from your old school were thick as thieves around here. Besides you and Warren, there was Jono, Emma, Kitty, Jean, Jamie, Cable, Scott, Magneto...But most of them have wandered off now, back to their own worlds to do the heroing thing."

So, you know. Everybody.

"Yeah, no, that's whatever," Bobby said dismissively. "I barely know some of those people. But you try living in the same house as your older self and see how much you like it." It was weird, Karla. WEIRD.

"It would be a brutal fight at pretty much any given moment with knives and hair pulling," Karla said bluntly. Because, hey, she was capable of some self-reflection. "Did he try to make decisions for you because he's 'older' and 'knows better'?"

"Mostly it was just a lot of shrieking every time I turned a corner and he was there," Bobby admitted. "I- we're- very high-strung." Hey, look, he was also capable of some self-reflection!

"So how are there two of you at once?" Karla asked, because that usually wasn't a thing. "Was there some kind of multiversal collapse or something?"

Because that very well could be.

Yeah, no, that would come later!

"Time-travel thing," he shrugged. "My friends and I got pulled in to the future, and apparently we're stuck here and can't go back, so. Making the best of it."

"Oh yeah?" Karla asked, accepting that answer with the aplomb of anyone who had spent time on the island. "From when?"

"The sixties," Bobby said offhandedly. And yet his older-self was somehow only about twenty years older, despite the fact that it was the same year in his reality as it was here in Fandom.

And also the Bobby Karla knew was only about ten years older than this one.

"The future's pretty neat. I like the Food Network." Hence signing up for this class. He was gonna be so disappointed.

Hey now. He could be too traumatized to be disappointed. That was always a possibility in Karla's kitchen.

And yeah, she was going to remain blissfully ignorant of weird aging shenanigans and the narrative wished it could do the same.

"Which ones were the sixties?" Karla asked. "I can never keep your timeline straight."

All five thousand years of it. Adorable.

"A lot more racist, sexist, and homophobic than now," Bobby said matter-of-factly. "Not that things have changed as much as I thought they would've, but it's definitely better."

"Bobby, darling, that doesn't narrow it down," Karla said. "Was the 60s the time with the neon and the big hair? Or right after the war and the weird obsessions with really big cars?"

"Neon and big hair?" Bobby said blankly.

Because he'd skipped right by the 80s, thank you.

Congrats, Karla, you apparently knew more about American culture than someone born in the actual country.
