Shop Class; Monday, First Period [08/27].

Was Amaya just a little more than pleased that there was a whole room in the school dedicated to machines and making stuff? You bet she was! If she'd have ever imagined she'd actually want to teach things, she might have been a little upset about not utilizing it earlier, but now felt like just the right time to start in on it, and she was eager to welcome her new batch of students for the new class.

"'Morning, everyone!" she said, nodding when it was about that time and everyone seemed there. "And welcome to Shop Class! Here, we're going to be making stuff, usually wood or metal stuff, and that's usually going to involve some heavy-duty and dangerous machines, so one thing I want to make crystal clear is that safety is always going to come first. Now, whoever's in charge of making these schedules thought it was a good idea to have sleepy teenagers working on heavy machines first thing in the morning on a Monday, so you better believe, I'm always gonna have a thing of coffee and a thing of tea available for you if you need it. Last thing we want is anyone losing fingers..."

In that slight pause there, she grinned faintly. "But if anyone does, well, then we got ourselves a substitute finger making project on our hands."

No, Amaya. No puns about mutilating students, please.

"Anyway, this here's the first class on the first week of a new semester, so we're not going to get into too much today, anyway. Gonna make you work up to the good stuff. Today, as some of you can guess, we'll be doing introductions, but we're gonna be doing 'em shop class style, with these," she gestured to the table beside here, where boxes of long metal sticks sat around a collection of hammers and a variety of small metal discs and squares. "Metal stamps! Now, I'm a blacksmith by trade, when I'm not teaching, and these are very common with any sort of metal work as a way to brand our pieces so people know when they're getting a bonafide Blackstone piece. It's also popular with jewelry, it's used to mark metal tags, and all sorts of other stuff. Today, we're going to be using them to introduce ourselves.

"Pick out a base and take a second to think about what you might want to stamp onto your tag. It can be your name, a nickname, something important to you, whatever you think might be a good way to ease into an introduction, then pick out the stamps you'll need. Grab a stamping block," and Amaya did just that, holding it up to show the class before she demonstrated as she talked, "tape your piece down on your tag to help you keep it all aligned. Now, this next part's important: start in the middle and work outward, so you'll have to do a little planning, but that'll help it be nice and centered and even. Unless you want it otherwise, I suppose. Start with your middle letter, place the stamp straight and firm on the piece, and then give it three firm hits," smack, smack, smack!, "on the top. And there you go!" She held up the block and brougth it close so they could see the firmly stamped A, then returned to the table. "Then just go from there," and she went through the other letters, place the stamp, grab the hammer, smack, smack, smack! Until she finished up, peeled off the tape, and then sent the small disc with "AMAYA" neatly printed on it around.

"And there you have it, that's my name, Amaya. I'd have probably preferred to put BLACK STONE on there, BLACK on top, STONE on the bottom, but that might've wound up taking half the class! So I'll let you get to it! If you have any questions, go on and ask me, and about twenty minutes to the end of class, we'll stop and take a second to show off what you made by way of introducing yourselves. And if it you finish your first piece well before the time, feel free to make one or two more of your choice.

"Alright, then!" Amaya grinned, lifting up one hand and pounding her fist into it. "Let's get to it!"

It might be a little tricky to see exactly what Amaya's doing as she's doing it, as it's pretty small work, but it's pretty straight forward, and if there are any questions, she'd be more than happy to answer them.

Ohhhh, so that was how they did it? As a man with about a million little things stamped onto his vest, Prompto was very excited about learning how to do this sort of thing, because now he could figure out how to customize more of his stuff, if he could get his hands on some supplies.

..and if he could find the space. It was..more than a little cluttered already.

Really, after the construction classes during the summer, Norman was pretty confident he'd be able to handle most of what was handed to him in this class. He was already grinning a little by the time the lecture got into what the task for the day was.

Yeah, he was glad he'd signed up for this.

Grab your stamps, grab your metal, and get to work making a tag that you can use as a base for your introduction.

There's a variety of letters available, but also some ~~moddable~~ little designs, punctuation, and other little things you can add if you wanted to do something a little less straight-forward. There might even be some letters from different alphabets; the stamps are mostly from Amaya's own collection, but also from a dusty old box she found in one of the cabinets that seems to have been there forever.

The first thing that popped into Prompto's head was to stamp out 'cowboy' on his tag, but then he thought of having to explain why he'd stamped out 'cowboy' onto his tag and nearly died from the prospective future embarrassment.

So he was going to stick with 'Prompto' but with an '!" at the end of it, his tongue poking out of the corner of his mouth a little as he focused on lining it up and getting them to look as neat as he could. He wanted to work quickly, though, because he wanted to also get in another tag that said 'Noctis.'

Friendship metal tags! YEAHHH!

Norman was going to go with the nice, straightforward, "NORMAN" for his tag.

... Because he honestly couldn't think of anything better.

The trick was making it all fit, because if he started a little to close to the right, he couldn't just squish the letters the way he would if he was writing it. Well. He'd tried.

Beaker did not stamp his hand in the machine ~~you know, yet~~ and managed to get all of the letters in the correct order, even if he did manage to get one of the E's and his K facing upside down.

Eh, for Beaker, this was some stellar work.

Aloy was a straightforward kind of girl, with a straightforward kind of attitude.

She also worked ridiculously quickly.

So within just a few minutes, there was a neat tag printed ALOY sitting right there.

She flipped the tag into the air, then caught it. "Easy enough."

"Alright, everyone, that's time!" Amaya called out when she glanced at the clock and saw they were closing in on the last half of the class. "Let's take turns to come on up, show everyone what you stamped, and explain how what you stamp represents who you are."

"I put Prompto, exclamation point!, on my tag," Prompto offered when it was his turn, grinning wildly and proudly as he held up the tag as if anyone could really see the tiny little letters. "Because that's my name! Prompto! And the exclamation point is to show that I'm very dynamic and exciting.

"I also made this one," he offered, holding up his other tag. "It says Noctis, and that's my best friend." His brows lifted a little worriedly as he looked over at Ms. Blackstone. "That's okay, right?"

"It's fine," Amaya assured him, laughing slightly because she honestly didn't know how to handle someone with that much...er...enthusiasm. "There's more than enough supplies, and I'm kind of impressed that you managed to work quickly enough to get in a second one." Though with that much energy...

"Nice work, Prompto; I hope you enjoy the class."

Norman smiled a bit sheepishly as he held up his tag.

"It, uh, it says Norm." He grimaced a little. "It was supposed to say 'Norman,' which is my name, but I got a little excited and didn't space it right. So now I guess it can stand for Norman or Normal or whatever other Norm-words there are out there?"

Normandy? Normothermia?

"I guess it's kind of pretty me that way, anyway."

Half-hidden and a little awkward.

"...Normanclature?"

Which wasn't a word, Amaya. But she smiled softly and gave him a nod. "Norm works pretty well; it's...succinct. And efficient! But, yeah, the spacing can be difficult to work out just right, especially the first time trying it, especially since once you get it wrong, there's really no way to fix it without just starting over. Nice work, either way, Norman. Good to have you in class again."

"Good to be back," Norman replied, smiling a little. "I'll, uh, I'll be more careful about it next time."

"Smart," Amaya said, her smile turning into more of a smirk. "Especially considering next time's likely to have a lot more spinny parts and sharp bits."

"Meep meep meep meep meep meep," Beaker said, holding up his "BEAKER" tag proudly. Even if the K and the last E were backwards.

"Meep meep meep meep!" He wasn't on fire, Amaya! Aren't you proud?

Proud, yes, along with several other words that would describe how she felt right now, which included shocked, amazed, and incredibly relieved. She was honestly a little afraid (and also slightly curious, if she was honest with herself) about what sorts of way Beaker could manage to screw this one up.

But not even one stamped finger on that weird foamy skin of his! And he was so pleased about it, too, so, really, proud definitely managed to win out over all those other words.

"Excellent work, Beaker! You know, I don't know if you did it intentionally or not," yes, yes she did, "but the way the K and the last E turned out really makes it come off as a unique touch, and I think that represents you very well."

Aloy caught the tag after flipping it again, realizing she was up moments later. "I'm Aloy," she said simply, and held the tag up between her thumb and forefinger.

Straightforward, indeed. Amaya could respect that sort of simplicity, for sure. She nodded. "Welcome to shop class, then, Aloy. Good to have you on board."

Before, after, and during, Amaya's definitely there if anyone needs her, coffee in her hands when it wasn't already occupied by a hammer and stamp.

I want to get metal stamps and stamp ALL THE THINGS now.
