Fun with Magic | Monday, 2nd period

Class had been instructed to meet again today in the Danger Shop. Once they were in there, Bob pushed buttons (he would never get tired of being able to do that) and brought up a program he'd done before. All that was visible from where they were was a green wall of shrubbery with a gap in it.

"Hedge mazes used to be very popular," Bob said, "but they were never quite like this one. This one goes in all directions - you're as likely to find a path above or below you as to one side." He nodded toward a box that held things that looked like little more than water wings. "These will let you hover; from there you can move as if swimming and work your way through the maze. If you make it to the other side, there is pizza."

He grinned at them. "Put on your wings, test them out, and let's see if you get there."

Try on the wings and start out!

Norman had the sneaking suspicion that Bob was going to try to turn this class into a learning experience, too. But that wasn't stopping him from pulling on the... really kind of ridiculous water wing things... and then considering the wall ahead of himself.

Okay, this wasn't so bad. If Aggie could rip the world apart around him, he could handle floating around for a bit. Easy.

It was almost like Norman was learning what Bob was like!

"Self-levitation isn't a skill many possess," he said. "Hence the objects. Often when a skill is difficult, enchanting an object to do it is the answer. Have you ever worked with enchanted objects before?"

"Never," Norman replied, shaking his head. There had been a book that he'd once thought had some sort of spell on it, but that had turned out to be... just a book. "Maybe some have come through the shop, but I didn't really work with them so much as sell them, if they have."

Bob nodded. "Some things are easier to enchant than others. Plastic, as a man-made material, holds to its nature well, and any enchantment not in line with that nature is extremely difficult - if one were, to say, try to enchant a plastic fork for use as a levitator, it would prove nearly impossible. However, causing devices for floating to float even further is fairly easy."

"Hence the silly water wings," Norman noted, holding up one arm a little and smiling wryly. "It's good to know they have a purpose beyond just making us all look like little kids at a waterpark."

"Oh, that's merely an amusing side effect," Bob assured him. "Some items," he continued, "are more flexible. Wood is a classic, as is rock - either can be carved to reflect the desired enchantment, you see. Made into certain shapes, or with the words of a spell cut or burned into them."

Move as if swimming, eh? Hopefully, Sidon might be forgiven for the slightly skeptical smirk of bemusement on his face at such a comparison; he was rather confident in himself when it came to that particular activity, yes. Still, he was rather excited to try out wings that could make him fly, and he was curious just how apt the comparison might be. Even if it turned out to not be quite what he expected once he got to it (yes, he still much preferred swimming), it was thrilling and it didn't hurt that he had pizza, one of the few human foods he'd actually enjoyed, to look forward to when he was finished, either.

Manfred was not the most coordinated person in the world, but he was definitely giving this the ol' college try. Hey, how many times did you get to fly?

He'll be waiting with the pizza he can't eat.

Norman was here! And wearing the water wings! And thankful that nearly dropping to his untimely death several times in his youth hadn't given him a more paralyzing fear of heights.

He was a little bit twitchy anyway, though.
