When the kids got to the site for class that day, they wouldn't find anything there but the table of their gear and a ladder leading up to the roof. So it shouldn't be too difficult to guess where their teacher might be. Amaya confirmed it a moment later when her head poked out from up at the top of the building, and she waved an arm. "Morning, builders!" she called down. "Grab your gear, get it on, and climb on up. We're roofing today. Oh, and, please, no one walk under the ladder if you can help it. At least not today."

Amaya wasn't really superstitious, of course, but there was just enough of it in her to make working on dangerous stuff on Friday the 13th was enough to make her a little jumpier than usual.

Once everyone was up and no one had fallen to their death or disfigurement, Amaya nodded, gesturing toward a big water cooler. "Water," she said. "Drink it, often, while you're working today when you can. But when we're not hydrating, we're gonna be finally tiling up this thing. Tiling's a bit more difficult that it looks, but we're going to work through it together, so get ready, grab your tools, and let's get to work."

If Amaya's voice wasn't already naturally a bit hoarse, it might have been by the time she was done with class, instructing and demonstrating as they went along, having them split up to work on the two sides of the roof separately with her overseeing and moving between the two and helping out.

And there really wasn't much too it than that. Straightforward, simple hard work. Just the kind she liked.

There isn't much of one before they get to work, but it's a good time to grab some of that water, be grateful the building wasn't too high, or ask any questions before you begin.

Norman was definitely grateful for some of that water, yes. It was possible that his tool belt was about equal parts bottled water and tools, right then.

Amaya walked them through the basics first, with demonstration and tips as she did it, and then split them up to put it to the test themselves: Norman and Yang on the north side, Jason, Breq, and Beaker on the south.

And then it was just watching and making suggestions and being available for questions...and holding her breath whenever any of them were closer to the edge.

Okay! Roofing! This wasn't so bad, really. Just as long as Norman didn't look down. Not that he was terribly afraid of heights or anything, but between the date and the small group of otherwise unseen ghosts nearby who were calling up at him to be careful and not to fall, he was developing a healthy sense of paranoid about this.

While she had never built roofs before, Breq knew how to repair a ship exterior in zero gravity. Gravity made things a lot easier, and had she been inclined to smile, the thought of the nails floating away would have made her do that.

She's there, of course. With a spray bottle that she could pretend was to spritz for cooling off, but, really, it was just to try to scare off any black cats that might drift near the site.

But she wasn't superstitious at all!

I think I could listen to that dude talk about roofs all day.

I'm doing RL roof repairs today, which made me laugh at today's class. And I can vouch for that drinking lots of water is needed.
